Eight of us stayed at The Holly Inn for a three-day golf trip. I picked the small and quiet Holly over the large Carolina because of a positive experience about 12 years earlier. We all enjoyed our stay. It is an old building, but the rooms are well appointed with modern baths. It was very hot and humid during our stay, but the AC in the hotel worked well. We ate one night in the Ross Grill (fancier, with good food) and the other times in the small and casual tavern. It was more suitable for a "guys dinner." We did not encounter any of the service problems reported by other visitors. The folks at the front desk can be a bit slow, but they are friendly and they get the job done. Everyone in our group would return.

Stayed there for 3 nights with a Golf Package. Overall: I would not go there again.
State of the room: ok., nothing special.
Room size: spacious but low ceilings. My room was close to a generator or similar and there was a constant noise.
Quality of mattresses: too soft.
Staff friendliness: excellent.
Breakfast: ok
Food quality in Hotel restaurant: poor.
Parking: included, just behind the Hotel
Internet cost / speed: included but too slow.
Golf: Pinehurst 2 is totally overprized, Caddies are carrying 2 bags!
Overall value for money: No, the price they charge doesnt match what is provided for.
My recommendation: Stay in one of the other Hotels around Pinehurst and play Pinehurst 4 or 8. There are plenty of other courses around. Something very special Tobacco Road.

A large group from my company stayed at the Holly Inn for three nights. It was my third trip to Pinehurst and second stay at the Holly. Even if you don't play golf, it's a great destination. The staff at the Holly and the Carolina couldn't have been friendlier, and the service was excellent. The Holly, a restored historic hotel/inn, is right in the Pinehurst village. The big hotel, the Carolina, is a short walk (or shuttle) away. I stayed in a very nice room (suite, actually) on the 4th floor. A large living/sitting room, big bedroom, and nice bathroom. So comfortable! The food is excellent, both at the Holly and at the Carolina. Our group had one of the best casual outdoor buffet dinners we have ever had on our last night at the Carolina. Oh, and the golf was great as you would expect from the golf Mecca.

Room Tip: Because the building is so old, there are some kind of weird rooms on the lower level (as in basemen...

Staff and value: I was pleased to get a great mid-week rate at The Holly Inn through the resort's website. I would recommend looking for specials on their site, as the rack rate is a bit high.
The staff was incredibly friendly throughout my stay. Every single employee I encountered went out of their way to greet me. They certainly lived up to five-star service standards. Alberta was especially friendly and pleasant upon check-out.

Property: Great location in the village. Well-kept grounds within walking distance of small shops and restaurants. This was a short mid-week trip so I was not utilizing the spa or other amenities; if I had, I probably would have preferred to be at The Carolina although this property is not terribly far from the main resort.

Room: Some of the negative reviews cite the "dated" look of the rooms. I'd classify it as true to the character of a historic property. My room was decorated in period-accurate furnishings. The bed and feather pillows made for a great night's sleep.
I agree that there are a few maintenance details that need attention: the bathroom wallpaper was beginning to peel in a couple spots, there were some chipped tiles, and the old Sunbeam-brand shower head could be easily replaced for something a bit more efficient.
I am not a coffee drinker, so the lack of a coffee maker in the room didn't affect me but may be annoying for others. The room is equipped with a mini-bar and an in-room safe.

Room Service: Excellent portobello panini on focaccia for dinner! Eggs benedict in the morning was well made, with the eggs hard poached as requested. I appreciated the attention to detail, promptness, and professionalism of the room service staff.

Misc.: The wi-fi can be a bit spotty and temperamental.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay. The character of the property, food, special rate, and great service are the factors that bump my rating into the "very good" category. I look forward to visiting again in the near future.

We don't golf or play tennis but had always wanted to visit Pinehurst and the village. We just wanted a room but reservation agent kept trying to upsell us. For just one night for two people, when you add the tax and resort service charge it ended up being $240. I don't mind paying that for a top-notch experience but I just don't feel we got what we paid for. Other places we've stayed at for that price offer turndown service, breakfast, in-room DVDs, and other amenities. Liked the dimmer swith on the lights. Didn't like the dark shower (only lights were next to the bathroom mirrors) and the freezing temps (in August they had the AC in the hallway cranked way up). Tavern was a nice place for a drink, especially at the impoted Scottish bar. Staff was pleasant. Just don't think we'll be back.

6 of us booked the Putter Boy package at Pinehurst and stayed at The Holly. This is an understated property that is full of character. The decor and the rooms are maybe a little dated but we found that part of the charm. The staff are excellent, the rooms adequate with comfortable beds and the food is really very good. Located in the center of the village this is a great place to stay if you are here for a golf trip!

We stayed five nights at The Holly Inn to celebrate a family wedding. In a lifetime of travel I cannot recall a more horrid lodging experience. The Holly Inn misrepresents itself on its website in the extreme, claiming grand historic elegance and 4 diamond service, absolutely not true.

When we arrived in the evening there was no bellman. The elevator and hallway carpets reeked of dust and were filthy, the hallway floors slant and the wall paint is cracked, bruised, scratched. Our room, directly above the front door awning and over the bar, had paper thin windows and walls. The room was also filthy, dusty, old. A riotous group partied heartily until we finally had to call the front desk at midnight and request that it be shut down. At 6:30AM the diesel bus to pick up the group was rattling our windows and the noise from the front door was again very disturbing.

The dining room, billed as an elegant, historic beauty (with a strict dress code!!), is a dump. We waited to be seated for breakfast for quite a while as the same noisy bus group was served, then we were seated rudely. Coffee and OJ were served to us without even greeting us or asking if we wanted it. The buffet had awful food, worse than off-highway motel complimentary breakfast, with boxed frosted flakes, no healthy food options and unripe fruit. The few hot entree containers, with biscuits and gravy and grits and other common edibles, were 70% empty. The scrambled eggs were rubbery and cold. Service was remarkably rude, with the hostess loudly barking orders to servers about tables to clean and set, all in front of us. Ready for the punch line? The bill was nearly $70.00, which included a mandatory 18% gratuity.

After several requests for a room change we were finally accommodated. The new room was quieter, but just as dirty/dusty, with filthy windows. The screens were full of holes covered in spider webs, so opening them for fresh air was not an option. The in room cooling and heating was dated and was either very cold or very hot, no comfort zone, and noisy.

The pool was closed for our entire visit.

The 10% "resort fee" automatically added to the bill is cleverly worded as providing "access" to resort amenities, but everything you "access" has an ala carte fee. We were not permitted to use the resort spa facilities without paying $50.00-$75.00 per day extra. I had looked forward to swimming, whirlpool, steam and sauna relaxation, but not to the extra expense to do so.

Even the simple, common amenity of a complimentary guest computer is not available. If you want to use a computer, as we did to print our return flight boarding passes, you must travel to the Carolina Hotel and, no surprise here, pay extra to use their "business services" computer center. The wireless internet in the hotel is spotty and very slow.

Our room had a broken shower head, a broken chair arm, a beat up old sofa, bugs in the bathroom. The "gracious grounds" are a few beds of pansies. The exterior of the building has peeling paint and looks awful.

There are not enough words to describe our disappointment and disgust with The Holly Inn.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else
