I've been to the Carolina Brewery in Chapel Hill several times and had always wanted to go to the one in Pittsboro, which I was told was at the junction of US Highways 64 and 15-501. Having spent time in Pittsboro as a kid when my grandparents lived there, I assumed that meant the restaurant was located downtown near the traffic circle and would therefore by a quaint place to grab a bite and a pint.
Unfortunately, the restaurant is located at the junction of 15-501 and US 64 BYPASS...meaning that it is miles north of downtown. The Carolina Brewery is located in a generic brick strip mall looking complex near a Japan Express with a view of the parking lot of Lowes Home Improvement...quite the letdown from the small town charm I had hoped for.
The service was okay, the food was good (the pimiento cheese and fried green tomato sandwich was tasty)...there was nothing WRONG with the experience...but there was nothing special about it either.
I came very close to giving a 3 star average review here, but I'm afraid my own expectiations were perhaps unreasonable. If you happen to be traveling on US Highway 64 bypass and want a good meal right off the exit, this is a good choice.
If your'e looking for atmosphere and a memorable experience...look elsewhere.
