Yes, you really do get all of the amenities listed for this hotel at the reasonable prices they charge, even though inadvertently visiting during March Madness. Nothing was not as clean as it should be, friendly employees. If you check the prices for a few people to visit a public indoor pool in Raleigh, the indoor pool earns this hotel the 5th star. It's not the most up-to-date or scenically located place, but well worth the price and we were quite comfortable.
A gas station next door and grocery store across the street are extremely handy. You can only turn right out of the property, but it wasn't difficult to get to the left-turn lane at the light that's right there, and do a U-turn to get back on 440, or go down New Bern to downtown (which took about 12 minutes on Sunday morning.) Extremely easy.
We had 2 rooms on the 3rd floor, one smoking, one not. I never smelled any smoke (except when I was smoking) but there was a strong smell of air fresheners. Why there was no exhaust fan in the bathroom is a mystery. Not having one is unusual in this kind of hotel. If those more sensitive to smoke smell are having problems with smelling it, as I read in some previous reviews, I would believe them. More fresh air (and air circulation) in general would be a great improvement in this building. On the 3rd floor, there are both smoking and non-smoking rooms. Maybe other floors have only non-smoking rooms. I would ask if concerned since the only fresh air coming into rooms seems to be when the door is opened.
The smoking room facing the street was large, more comfortable, with a small sofa though it was in poor condition, (very slightly) better than sitting on the bed. I think it was just because the floorplan has bigger rooms on that side whether smoking or not, but I don't know. I don't care how old something is if it's clean and still serving its' original purpose, but this sofa looked and felt like it belonged in a frat house at the end of a hard year, on its' way to the dumpster by even college boy standards.
Ask for extra towels for the pool, there's not a stack of them down there. They were nice, large, fluffy towels.
When they say sausage for breakfast, they mean cold patties on little biscuits, wrapped in plastic wrap. The coffee was great with little flavored creamers available, and the mixed fruit cups were good. Besides some yogurt and the sausage 'sandwiches,' I think it was all carbs. Boiled eggs were gone by about 8:30, though they may have put more out, I wouldn't have known. On par with free breakfasts in this price range hotel, though the room wasn't big enough at all, crowded, tight.
We never waited long, but as far as I saw, there's only 1 guest elevator in this building.
We would recommend and re-visit this hotel.
