We really enjoyed our anniversary dinner upstairs (not the tavern) at 2nd Empire. It is relatively quiet which is hard to find these days. Service was good though a little pretentious. Nice wines are available by the glass and the presentation of all courses is beautiful. The food is good but not outstanding, though the grouper entree was very good. For some reason, I felt that most of the food would have been better if they had not made it so complicated. I would return more for the quiet atmosphere than for the food itself.

The restaurant is in a beautiful house with seating in rooms throughout the house. The service was excellent and the food was suburb. Had duck confit, baby mesclun salad and cheese plate for entrees. Australian rack of lamb and fresh caught grouper for the entree and finished the meals off with a chocolate souffle. My mouth is watering again just writing about it. A definite place to go when in Raleigh, NC. I live near NY and eat at the Zagat best all the time. Second Empire rates right up there is food and service.

We were visiting friends in Cary and had a farewell dinner at the Second Empire restaurant (be sure to book upstairs, not in the tavern downstairs) which was really outstanding. The location in an old town house is marvellous, the team was friendly and very attentive, the quality and presentation of starters, entrées and desserts simply perfect! My lamb rack was one of the best I have ever eaten between Maine and Georgia... Cakebreads Chardonnay and the Sequoia Grove Cab Sav were delicious as ever, but have a detailled look on the winelist, it's really worth it. We are looking forward to our next visit to Raleigh!

Tavern Dining:
Food is good, but didn't think great. Portions were smallish. I found myself grazing for more bread after entree. Prices are a little pretentious compared to food portions. If don't mind paying for atmosphere and service you'll be fine. Service was great as it always it. I like Tavern atmosphere better than the "house" effect of upstairs restaurant. Some staff were "We're Second Empire" and other were more down to earth and very engaging and added to the evening. Again food was good but not great, surveying folks afterwars as they know i write on trip advisor... 3 were similar "good not great" (2 of them thougth food was great but overpriced and "[not really worth it]" and 2 were set on"great".

Lovely setting, exceptional service, outstanding food! This. Was a great meal, well served in lovely surroundings. We each ordered different mains, 2 fish, one bird, each well cooked, plated and delicious! The accompanying veggies and sauces were done just right and not the usual suspects. Very good beer and wine list. The servers were attentive, but not hovering. Just go and enjoy!
