The perfect anniversary dinner.

We called to reserve and luckily a table was available - only about 8-10 tables in the whole restaurant so you get a very personal service.

Reception staff in hotel were friendly and professional, showing us to equally fantastic restaurant hostess, who was Spanish. She was attentive without being intrusive, and couldn't do enough for us.

Beautiful venue lit with candles, a small menu done well, and generous portions which is unusual for 'a la carte'. We couldn't manage a dessert!

Parking is tricky but we used a local Council car park which was free after 6pm, so it was no trouble. Beautiful bread, 2 starters, a soft drink, 2 beers and 2 mains was in the region of £60, so great value for an AA rosette award experience. Highly recommended.

As the father of the bride, I was nervous about the wedding, but with the Elephant's team at the helm, I needn't have worried. They organised the wedding brilliantly, liaising with my daughter to meet her exacting requirements. The food was great and the service unobtrusive but very responsive. The evening disco was wonderful and the hotel coped really well with the very merry guests!
A huge thank you to all of the staff at the Elephant for their brilliant work!

I cannot recommend The Elephant hotel highly enough. The entire team of staff couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful, our 3 course meal was delicious as was our full English breakfast the following morning. Our room was cosy but seductive as we stayed in the 'karma sutra' room! This was completely unexpected and hilarious (the headboard is not for the faint of heart). We had a wonderfully relaxing time and enjoyed a peaceful hour in front of their roaring open fire after we had checked out. The shower was hot and powerful, the hotel quiet with serene gardens and despite being approx 10 minutes from our house I genuinely felt as if we had visited some far off retreat as the bed is so comfy and the linen luxurious. What a treat.

Room Tip: Close the bathroom door before bed so as not to be disturbed by early morning traffic.

The Elephant is a great place - lovely food, great staff, comfy beds, fabulous Egyptian cotton bed linen - a breath of fish air from corporate hotels. However, sadly the central heating system was no noisy that it woke me throughout the night (even though I was wearing ear plugs - always pack them just in case!) .... Every couple of hours the heating system made a noise like a fog horn which was impossible to sleep through. Suspect the sound insulation in my room wasn't great as I could hear the guest next door whistling at midnight too. So if you stay here, avoid room 11 - hopefully it's an isolated problem!
I still love the food, the staff etc so will return for meetings or to eat, but would not risk another sleepless night here, sadly.

The Elephant is one of a small group of quirky hotels and none the worse for that. Bedrooms are eccentric but comfortable, while the restaurant and bar are from another age. Chesterton would have enjoyed the village bar, with its excellent West Berkshire beers, while his wife might have preferred the lofty dining room. Both could have stayed where they were to eat: the obliging staff will happily serve wherever food is required, even in the huge and charming garden. The menu is dominated by location, with venison and other game and local butcher meat, all dexterously cooked and presented simply. There are no culinary pretensions or pyrotechnics here but this is a serious hotel in the great tradition of innkeeping.

Room Tip: Front of the hotel faces onto a mini-roundabout, and traffic starts early.

I am so pleased that you find our “quirky luxury” approach to our hotels enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you back to us or another of the properties in our group.
