We have just spent the weekend staying at the Elephant in Pangbourne and I must say what a find. We were staying in the area and booked a room at the Elephant for £99. We had room23 which had it's own terrance opening onto the garden which was excellent. Good size room large very comfortable bed with interesting Indian theme running througout.
Dinner in the resturant was inexpensive £60 for two with a reasonable bottle of wine and I must say the food was really excellent. We travel extensivly and eat out in and out of London on a regular basis but the food at the Elephant was first rate. We did grab a quick and healthy lunch at the Ditty cafe in Pangbourne but the veneing meal and breakfast in the hotel were excellent. Staff on reception and in the resturant were very helpful and service was spot on. Will we return? without a doubt. Would I recommend it? absolutely. If you need a great little hotel in this area then the Elephant should be te place to choose.

This was a very much above average hotel and our first impressions were excellent when we were greeted at Reception by a cheerful young woman who showed us to our room. This was of a very high standard and good value with quality furnishings and a comfortable bed with a solid wood headboard. The bathroom was modern and everything was very clean. This applied throughout the hotel. The lounge area had comfortable sofas where we had a drink before dinner brought to us by a courteous waiter. The hotel has an Eastern theme with a huge elephant in the dining room and lots of curios spread around, all in good taste and not over the top. The food was good with a simple English menu which included a beefburger and chips!

Our room at the rear of the hotel was quiet except for some merryment from garden guests which stopped at midnight. The rooms at the front might suffer from some traffic noise as the hotel is in the middle of Town and on a busy road.

We would certainly recommend this hotel which is far above average and with excellent value weekend packages. The only slight downside is that the car park is small and it would improve appearances if the two ugly waste bins at the entrance were placed out of sight (also the row of wheelie bins)

A good example of everything done right. great staff, good location, comfortable rooms. a new hotel, old building - don't know what it used to be, but started up as Elephant in December of 2007 if I have that right. Great dining room with excellent food. not cheap, but very good quality for price. we were surprized that the dining room was not as busy as we expected, give the quality. i guess folks just don't know its there yet.

ask for rooms in back. ours was 24, ground floor with windows on parking lot - very comfortable and big but with that location we didn't want to open windows. no shower curtain, which i understand is typical, but something we missed all the same. arrived with room in 2-single bed configuraton. on request, the staff changed it to one big bed - pushing the two together and replacing bedding. happened very quickly and without bother. we went for a beer and it was all done when we got back.

we'll definately stay here again if we are ever back in the area.

On a recent trip to the UK , we had to be in Reading for a couple of nights. We hate hotels in big cities if we can avoid them and my husband found this wonderful, highly original hotel in the small nearby town of Pangbourne on the river Thames. Apparently it had only just been completely refurbished.

Our room, the "Maharajah", was spectacularly eccentric, decked out in sumptuous colours and Indian furniture. Apparently all the rooms have individual themes to them.

The bar (called "Barbar" - so someone's got a good sense of humour!) was comfortable, light and cheerful and obviously very popular. The bar menu was fun and we ate well there our first night, but we went for a bit of indulgence the next night, eating in the main dining room - superb unfussy "modern british" food at its best.

Above all, the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly and the overall atmosphere more relaxed and welcoming. We would certainly recommend a visit!
