We stayed here to meet up with family and to celebrate a birthday.

Our snack lunch in the bar was fine and dinner in the restaurant was good, made even better by our smiling and attentive waitress. When she discovered there was a birthday in our party she produced a small dish of chocolates with a candle in!

The room was fine but, as others have commented the plumbing was not brilliant, not always flushing correctly and then producing a really loud hammering noise. It was warm in the room (it was July!) but the fan provided took care of that

However the setting, the staff and the overall atmosphere more than compensated for the plumbing.

We visit the area quite frequently, but had not stayed in Pangbourne before.

In general, we tend to be wary of ‘themed’ or ‘quirky’ places, but The Elephant is fun and works well; the Indian/elephant theme is omnipresent, but isn’t allowed to intrude on functionality; our room, on the garden side of the annex, was quiet, spacious, clean and had all the necessities, including a modern bathroom with a shower that was positively fierce, though not thermostatically-controlled. There is a large and well-tended garden that you wouldn’t know existed from the street, and our room had a door directly into it, with a small private patio and a table and chairs just outside. It would be very pleasant to sit out there in the evening (unfortunately, it rained for us).
The staff were friendly & helpful.

Minor points were:
- The little extras - toiletries, biscuits, water, coffee, etc – were high-quality, and included some unexpected freebies (a sample-sized bottle of elderflower spirit) which were appreciated
- The guests’ lounge areas were spacious and looked comfortable
- We only ate breakfast in the hotel (it was very good), but there are also full restaurant & bar menus, both of which looked interesting
- The bar has a much better atmosphere than most hotel bars. There seemed to be non-residents using it, which is normally a good sign
- The hotel has its own parking, but it’s quite a tight area and it can be tricky to extract your car from a space. Usefully, there is a large public car park immediately next door. It only charges between 8 am and 6 pm, and the charges are low, but it could be annoying to have to get to the pay machine before 8 in the morning. However, the hotel staff think that, if you pay after 6 pm, it does roll the credit over to the following morning, and there are also pay-by-phone or website options.

We enjoyed our stay, and will go back again.

We spent one night at here and really enjoyed our stay. I would like to have given a higher rating as the service and the food was very good, . but the little things that need attention, I was unable to read in bed at night as the light was too weak, the hair dryer would not reach to a mirror and the room was very warm (it was a very hot night).
Mathew the manager was excellent and made us very welcome. Would stay again especially at the week-end rate very good value.

Had a couple of nights away by myself on business but it still felt like a treat! From reservation to departure all staff were lovely.

My very comfortable and beautifully decorated room was in the Annexe. Surprisingly great shower for this type of building. Top quality teas and coffees and complimentary water which makes me very happy.

Had supper in the bar one night which was delicious. Good buffet spread for breakfast with a variety of hot options cooked to order, served piping hot. The coffee served at breakfast was good too - there's no excuse not to nowadays but still far too many hotels continue to do so.

The Elephant is a very individual hotel, seemingly with a lot of repeat guests - me included, glad to be going back next week!

This hotel is a bit different from normal with interesting indian/colonial decor & lots of elephants!
The public areas (bar, restaurant, lounges & garden) all look good & the staff are friendly.
Breakfast is excellent. We had a nice time but be aware of a few downsides which are:

There is quite a busy road running next the hotel & hence rooms on the road side are noisy
in the summer when you need the windows open. Our room (Rm 2 - The Colonial) was
particularly noisy due to traffic which woke me up pretty early. I think the hotel should definitely
charge much less for these rooms!

Plumbing is very noisy - not a major problem but annoying someone runs the tap at 5am and
shakes the whole building.

Pangbourne is not at its best this summer as the river is a building site (due to bridge reconstruction).

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the garden side. The road side is noisy.
