“Why stay anywhere else?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2014

This hotel is one of a kind. It sits in the High Atlas mountains, and the views from the property are simply beautiful. We had three nights here during the wettest and coldest part of the year. Our room was warm and cosy, and the large log fire in the public room was lit as soon as anyone appeared, and carefully tended to make sure it was always welcoming. The view from our room took in a panorama of mountains with a snow-covered peak to set them off. When we stayed, the hotel was quite quiet, and we had many interesting conversations with the other guests, with Paul the owner, and with Fuzzia (sorry if I spelled this wrong!) which helped us to understand much about Morocco generally. The meals were excellent, and when we asked what was in them, a selection of the raw ingredients were produced so that we understood. Had we stayed another day, we could have had a cookery lesson and learned some traditional Moroccan cooking. The hammam treatment was excellent and interesting, I suspect it was a gentler introduction to the hammam than starting out in a public one! On our one really sunny day, we went for a very long walk, taking Paul's map with us. We got lost a little in the villages, but not seriously, and i would recommend doing this for a real chance to get a bit closer to the countryside. It looks quiet, but actually there are an incredible number of people scattered through it. It is not often that you leave a hotel feeling that you are leaving friends behind you. I would recommend this hotel without hesitation, it was fantastic.

Room Tip: As far as I know, all rooms have a fabulous view. There are only a few rooms, I would expect them a...

We stayed here for 3 nights towards the end of September and had a wonderful time. There was only one other couple when we were there so we felt like we had a private luxury boutique hotel. We had a junior suite which was super with the most lovely terrace from which to sip wine and watch the amazing sunsets over the mountains. The fixed menu evening meals were very good with 3 peppers chicken and goat tagine our favourites. Lunches by the pool were excellent and we had various meat skewers with top quality and imaginative salads. The pool itself was lovely, and we also enjoyed having a massage/hamman on site. The service was unobtrusive but excellent. Paul and his mother manage the hotel with style and passion and the rest of the staff were helpful and friendly. Khalid arranged for us to visit the local market at Asni with him as our guide and we really enjoyed the experience. Domaine Malika is a very special place and we can certainly recommend it.

From the road, you can barely understand this is a hotel. Walking in the entrance door, you wonder in which decade your time machine decided to stop. Paul and his mother have a good sense of style, not only when it comes to the interiors (the mirror, the triple fireplace, the tables, and the posters). The food is delicious, you are treated with great service and you relax so much that you start to fantasize about being part of a Poirot episode.

With only seven rooms, you get to know the other guests a little bit, especially if you stay there for New Year’s Eve like we did, when the dinner party lasted for the whole evening including cocktails before the dinner and champagne at midnight. With guests from Morocco, France, Switzerland, Russia and Norway I started to wonder who would be murdered first. But there were no scream.

The following day we drove a few hours in the Atlas Mountains. With clear skies and stunning views, it was a perfect first day of 1934, no 2014 it is.

The only thing that did not fit in my Poirot story was the staff. They just seemed too happy.

We found Domaine Malika through Tripadvisor, so it's only fair to Paul and the hotel staff that we post a review of their wonderful hotel. We hesitate to write this, because we don't want this retreat in the Atlas Mountains to be discovered by too many people ;).

Domaine Malika is located approximately 90 minutes east of Marrakech near the village of Ouirgane. The ride quickly takes you from the bustle of the city to a picturesque, serene, and wonderfully quiet setting for this charming boutique hotel.

After settling up with our driver we were promptly greeted by Paul's staff and given a tour of the property. We were fortunate to have had the entire hotel to ourselves our first night at Domaine, and we were treated like the king and queen of the castle!

We were blown away by Paul and his staff! Paul couldn't have been more accommodating and hospitable, and the staff truly went out of their way to cater to all our needs. Paul treats his entire staff like family, and he extends that sentiment to his guests. This was most apparent on Christmas night. Paul started the evening off with a local band and dancing. The staff, the guests, and Paul's own family joined in the celebration. This was followed by an amazing five-course Christmas dinner.

Regarding the food at Domaine: We spent time in Morocco and Dubai, UAE on this vacation, and we can honestly say that the food at Domaine Malika was without question some of the best we experienced. They blend french cuisine with local tastes. Many of the items served at the hotel are grown/produced in the valley.

We fit in quite a few activities during our stay, all of which were easily set up in advance through the hotel:
- We took a two hour horseback riding trip through the valley and Berber villages. It was incredible! They accommodate all riding abilities. We wouldn't recommend the riding tour through the village to new riders, but anyone with some horseback riding experience should be fine.
- We also booked a five hour guided hike which gave us a more candid tour of the villages than we'd experienced on horseback. Our guide Mohamad was referred to us by Paul and was outstanding! He was born and raised in the Ouirgane Valley and has an extensive knowledge of the area. He is both a local guide and mountaineering guide throughout the Atlas Mountains. He discussed geology, culture, regional history, and showed us many features unique to Ouirgane (the olive mill near his village was fantastic!) Our hiking tour concluded with a visit to Mohamad's home where we met his family. They were so welcoming and had meal prepared for us when we arrive. We were honored to have the opportunity to experience a more personal part of this rich culture.
- After the hike did a couples hammam at the hotel. As this was the only hammam we did while in Morocco (and our first ever), we can't compare it to others. We certainly did enjoy it though!

Whether this is your first time to Morocco or a return visit, Domaine Malika, the Ouirgane Valley, and the Berber people in this region of the Atlas Mountains provide an unforgettable experience. Many thanks to Paul and his staff for making our anniversary so special. We will undoubtedly be making a return visit!

One hour from Marrakech and you get into family hotel. Very cozy, friendly and beautiful. At day you enjoy sunny mountains and at night there are sooooo many stars in the sky!
I'm sure that we shall return there one day.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in the middle of our honeymoon in September 2013 and had an absolutely wonderful time. The hotel is incredibly stylish, beautifully decorated in an art deco style, and very peaceful. Our bedroom had breathtaking floor to ceiling views of the mountains, a lovely balcony with a cushioned seat for pre-dinner drinks as the sun set, and a large comfortable double bed. Paul and all of his team offered us a first class service, with incredible food served under a jasmine canopy by the pool to soft jazz music (a real highlight), friendly non-intrusive service, and a warm welcome. We would 100% visit here again, and will forever treasure very fond memories of such a special place in the mountains.

It does exactly what it says on the bottle! The photos and description on the website are completely accurate. We were a party of 5 adults and 3 children taking 4 rooms. Paul and the team were great and couldn't do enough for us. The food was high quality (mostly French) and while it was a set menu for dinner the chef was completely flexible if anyone had a particular dislike. They also provided excellent kids' menu, again catering for individual preferences as much as possible. We took 2 treks with a guide with small children on mules and a packed lunch from the hotel which were great - the views were amazing and it was lovely to have no kids moaning about tired legs! My Mum celebrated her 80th birthday at Malika and the staff made a real fuss of her and provided an amazing cake with happy birthday sung in English, French and Arabic. We loved it!
