I stayed for 2 days in this gem of a hotel in May 2013 with my family. We wanted a clean, modern hotel with a decor which would remind us of old China. We were not disappointed! What we saw in the official photos was what we got. Spacious comfortable rooms, clean modern amenities, a warm elegant ambience reverberating with old Chinese overtones, a well-manner staff (I could speak some Putonghua which helped a lot) and free Wi-Fi throughout our stay.
There were nice touches like his and hers bedroom slippers and interesting Chinese art on the walls.
My room had a small balcony. Not much of a view but a great idea if you were a smoker and craved for “fresh air”! Rightly, the hotel was very particular about fire safety.
The breakfast which came with the room was very basic and was served in a bare dining hall. However at the other end of the floor was the “real” restaurant which was well-appointed with great dim sum. It was well worth paying for a taste of real Sunde dim sum rather than take the bland breakfast inclusive in the room rate.
Just a stone’s throw away was the famous Qing Hui Yuan, a not-to-be missed classical garden villa. Adjacent to the garden villa was an interesting street featuring a shop selling incredibly beautiful and authentic silk embroidery and another shop selling traditional Shunde biscuits and snacks.
Minus points were few. One was the incomprehensible practice of charging guests for using the non-woven laundry bag. At check-out I was given the option of unloading the laundry bag which I had used to stuff my dirty laundry in, make a payment for the disposable bag or exchange the laundry bag for another non-woven carrier bag made of the same material as the laundry bag, for free. Quite bizarre practice indeed.
Another negative point was that the check-in lobby was on Level 3. The route to this check-in lobby was poorly marked. I would have been quite confused had I not been directed to the lifts and told to press Level 3 by others.
This hotel name, “Xiang Yun Sha”, referred to the unique and exquisite rubbed silk, native to this part of Foshan. Although it was an appropriate and beautiful name, I wish they would give this lovely hotel a simpler name which would be easier for visitors to remember and pronounce!
My stay in Shunde was so enjoyable in large part due to the comfort and quiet ambience which this hotel provided. I would definitely recommend Xiang Yun Sha!
