“It makes a good roundabout”

Drum Tower of Yinchuan
Reviewed 2 July 2014

It is just there not much else you can really say. It isn't remarkable and not much different from other cities but it is a good congregation point for the locals.

There are actually 2 drum towers very close together. #1 is on a round about. Has an awesome morning market. A pedestrian westernish mall. And most importantly, awesome street massage in the park- 10-20 rmb. The 2nd drum tower has the BEST dumpling house in yinchuan and possibly china. You have to look for it and ask on one of the 4 side streets. It's very close. Get to watch them make dumplings and the whole shebang. Went 3 times as it was so awesome.

It's worth putting it out there - Yinchuan's Drum Tower isn't really in the same league as those in many other Chinese cities - like Beijing's. However in a city like Yinchuan, where modernisation has all but swept away the old in favour of the new and modern, it is a lone reminder of how Yinchuan must have looked.

I asked my taxi driver to take a circuitous route around the heart of Yinchuan, so I could see life in the city, and he gave me a potted history of how it had changed in the 40+ years since he ran around its streets as a child. We drove past so much modernist square grey architecture that the Drum Tower was a relief. The taxi driver commented on how it was one of the only things that hadn't been pulled down.

I couldn't comment on what its like to explore, but the streets around it are interesting.

The drum tower is a good photo opportunity and you can walk right up to it

If you get there early in the morning you will see the local markets and people exercising
In the square and surrounding streets, everything from tai chi, sword play or group aerobics!

There are dozens of genuine masseurs there who charge just $2.80 US for a 40 minute massage

Food is available for purchase but other then the cold drinks most local shops sell local food
