Asporos potamos is not easy to find. We arrived at the white river cottages and thought it was asporos potamos. There was an angry greek lady there so we were happy we were at the wrong location. At asporos potamos we were welcomed more warmly and shown to our cottage. We could choose between 2 and were given a bigger cottage than we booked. We stayed there for two nights with breakfast. The breakfast was nice, where your table would be full with cheese, eggs, yoghurt, fruit etc. The cottages themselves are beautiful, with oil lamps lighting your cottage at night. The beds were firm, but not as firm as other reviews made us believe. It were the softest beds we had so far in crete (because the others were even more firm). The cottage doesn't really cool off during the evening/night so it can be very warm (we went in july). Also there are a lot off bugs and dust (due to hard winds) but that was to be expected. The road to asporos potamos was a dirt road, which was an adventure for our small rental car. A beautiful not crowded beach is the green beach (Diaskari) when you leave the cottages and are on the main road down by the sea you go left instead of right to makrygialos. the beach is almost immediately to your right, there are very few people there and you can rent a hammock it also has a nice taverna. All things considerd, it was a pleasant stay in a beautiful cottage with nice people. It would have been better if we went in May in a 4x4 and remembered to close the door to keep the bugs out.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Aspros Potamos is known to be the most ancient settlement in the area of Pefki. It is located in south-east Crete, a thousand meters above sea level and the coastal village Makrys Gialos. The area is famous for its natural beauty, which comprises of numerous unspoiled beaches, traditional picturesque villages, and its four magnificent gorges. It is an ideal location, since the area combines both beaches and mountains covered by lush greenery and endogenous pine, olive and citrus trees. It is thought that early Aspros Potamos was originally much larger; however, probably the constant attacks and raids from pirates forced the inhabitants to abandon the settlement. So, they sought refuge in the higher mountain ranges, where it was more safe and isolated and they used the settlement to house their life stock during the harsh winter months or they would venture down in order to maintain their vegetable gardens. The old inhabitants of Aspros Potamos are considered to be the first settlers of the mountain area of Pefki. This comes as no surprise, since the location is spectacular with densely covered mountain sides and valleys giving an intense green foliage. The valley on the south side reaches all the way up to Analipsi and the stream Aspros Potamos, which the settlement takes its name from, runs through it. ... more less
