Ease of walk, views, location and history, This was the first preserve on Sicily. Initially earmarked for a highway along the coast in the late 70's; once construction started, protestors block access and boycotted the gov't. Really neat story. Worth the trek.

The riserva actually encompasses a wide stretch of salt pans (saline) and some grassland and marshland. Some reviews actually are reviewing the Museo del Sale, which is not the Riserva but located in it. As another reviewer noted, the pans are functional in appearance and thus not technically beautiful but different, emblems of human ingenuity, kind of like rice paddies. More stars had there been flamingos (not the season) or white expanses of salt (too early).

I was speechless. This place is so enchanting. I was driving from Trapani to Marsala (this is a recommendation to see all of them). it is a natural reserve, protected by WWF. If you are lucky you can have the chance to see flamingos around. Definitely you will meet a lot of travelers nature lovers. Very good spot to enjoy the sunset!
there is also a meusium you can visit (and you have to pay for it; i do not think it is expensive) but i did not have time to go

This was a great stop on our way to Marsala. I was amazed at how they produced the salt. Its a great spot to stretch your legs buy some souvenirs or get a bite to eat. The gift shop had plenty of salt to purchase so no rush needed.

I went to Trapani in November 2013 with my girlfriend, before going we contacted the riserva to book our tour. All the staff gave us a warm welcome. We felt really comfortable as the staff can speak understandable English. It's Interesting both regarding the Salt production and as a natural reserve where you can see many different species of birds, including flamingos, cattle egret, herons etc. Make sure you take some sandwiches and a drink with you as there isn't anywhere to buy food and drink and also It's not very easy to get to by bus, so I suggest renting a car for a couple of days as it will also be useful to get to other attractions near Trapani. This is not an attraction where you go for just half an hour! You'll probably spend around 3hrs or more, so make sure you're not tight on your schedule.
