We drive by car up to Erice, and walked through the small streets. We also went to the castle ruïnes, and paid 5euro p.p. for a ticket - which is too expensive as there is not much to see, and little background info.

Overall tip: visit Erice but skip the castle!

Small medieval village where time seems to have stopped in the XII century, full of little souvenir shops and restaurant, definitely worth it for a day-trip and breathtaking landscapes.

If you are in the Trapanni area a visit not to be missed is to the fortress town of Erice which dates back to the 1500's. After a spectacular drive around the mountain, park you car on the outskirts of the town and walk (good walking shoes a must) the cobbled streets and laneways to take in the history and ambience of this unique place. Lots of history around every turn and the views over the coast and surrounding countryside from the castle and many other vantage points around the city are some of the most spectacular in Sicily. Try to ensure you visit on a clear day and don't forget the camera. Definately one of the highlights of the visit to Sicily.

One shouldn't miss a half day visit and a good lunch. Delightful town easy to access either by your own car or by cable car. Romantic evenings, good 3 star hotels, nice meals. In a word... your daft if you visit Trapani and don't go to Erice.

Trapani is an elegant city - small and manageable on foot. Lovely architecture and great food. A pleasant place to stay if you are visiting Erice, the Islands or Marsala.
Erice is fabulous - well worth a day out. The climb up in the cable car is exciting - amazing views of Trapani. It is a very well preserved town with some of the best churches we saw in Sicily.
