“Old style Motel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

What Sarah A, 2keys1trip and even lasteve told it all. The view was spectacular, the breakfast was choices of cereal, toast (bread and bagels), apples, coffee, tea, but we did have home made muffins one day of our 5 nights there. Enjoyed the campfire and BBQ out front and sitting on the large deck. Location to everything in area the reason we stayed there. Alain did a lot of work setting us up for the snorkel with the seals (worth the trip by the way) because of bad weather the day changed a few times. The hamburger/ice cream stand almost next door has home made ice cream and burgers - worth it.

Room Tip: Rooms all the same, small and old fashioned but clean.

We stayed 2 nights at this motel in early August and were very pleased with our stay. The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. The BBQs were a nice feature to allow you to cook your own meals, which we did both nights benefiting from all the local poissoneries in the area. Stock up before you arrive as it is about ~30ish minutes from town. You can't beat the location, right on the edge of Forillon National Park, with a beautiful view of the ocean. We enjoyed hiking around the park, and whale watching (which leaves directly from the park), and we got a discount on our whale watching tour through the motel. The owner was very nice and helpful, offering a small continental breakfast in the main reception building. Despite getting a little sea sick from the whale watching cruise, all in all we enjoyed our stay very much, a nice little getaway.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the renovated rooms. Kitchenettes are available if desired.

This property is a small roadside drive-up motel. If you are looking for more than that - go elsewhere. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. Our room had a small fridge and table with two chairs, closet, TV, and a queen size bed. The 3 piece bath was a small stand alone shower stall, sink on the wall and a toilet. Nothing fancy but very clean and all in good repair. We experienced no issues with hot water. There were two windows that opened on either side of the large picture window and a window fan was provided for additional ventilation if required. There was no air-conditioning but I doubt that would be needed because the view from that large window was a stunning sweep of beach complete with a salt breeze. The Cap-des-Rosiers lighthouse stands guard across the road. In the evening a bonfire was lit on the lawn of the motel for the enjoyment of guests. BBQ's also seemed to be available for guest use. A small but adequate breakfast was provided in the morning at the registration office/owner's home. The owner gladly spoke English and was very helpful.

This motel has one thing and only one thing going for it-location, location, location.
It is located almost directly under the lighthouse on Cap de Rosiers (about 1/2 hr from Gaspe town) and also sits about 3 mins (car) from the north entrance to the Forillon National Park.
Sitting outside your motel room, you have the lighthouse (meters away) on one side and the spectacular view of the "land's end peninsula" of the park on the other side.
Quite a breathtaking scene.

Beside the view, that is it for the motel.
The place is run down and in need of repairs/updates.
The entrance to the motel ("front office") is shabby and needs revision.
The "continental breakfast" (I would call it more of a snack,) is horrible-there are multiple breakfast cereal cartons left on a table with some breads and toast and some "sample size" butter/jellies/cream cheese. Definitely, the worst "breakfast" of any of the other 6 B/B we stayed in on our week long journey on the Gaspe.

The room is tacky and feels like an old motel from the 60s.
The bathroom is dirty with fungus stains around the drains.
I felt like I was going to be scratching the entire next day (although luckily enough, we did not encounter any insect creatures in our room.)

The host, Alain, in previous reviews, is stated to be very helpful and knowledgeable.
I found him not very helpful at all.
I had done my research before setting out on the trip and when I went to the office and inquired about night-time Forillon park activities, he had no idea what I was talking about.
I think I knew more about the park then he did.

It is also "advertised" that there are no restaurants in Cap de Rosiers, so better eat before or be willing to travel.
That is true, BUT there is an ice cream stand that is about a 1 min walk from the motel (just slightly past the lighthouse) that has EXCELLENT ice cream/splits, and shakes and also serves hamburgers and hot dogs. So if you forget to stock up or eat before, you can do as we did and have one unhealthy dinner on your journey.

All in all, I would not recommend this motel, except if you don't mind a dump, but want to have a beautiful vision sitting outside your room...........

Room Tip: There are no good rooms. Sit outside your room to gain the best from this place.

We were going to stay here but the price quoted was higher than listed online. We are English speakers but could hear the desk person (owner?) quote a lower price in French on the phone to someone else.

We took a look at the room; seemed to have almost no ventilation and faces the road (noisy).

We ended up staying at a different motel, further up the road. Paid much less, had a nicer room, a beautiful view and the room faces away from the road. Breakfast sounds a little better at Motel du Haut Phare and we are not as close to the beach, but I think value is better where we ended up staying. The difference in price paid for a meal.

Hello, i think that before you say something like this to the world you must be sure of what you’re saying, first of all I’m very honest and I negotiate with people from around the world so I have no interest of making different price to anyone or different from my own website, if I was on the phone with someone else how can you what type of room he asked for, how many people & etc you can’t, we do have ventilation in the room and yes our breakfast is much better than the other place they only give you bread and jam, that I know, I think you must be careful when you say things like you said, to finish I must say that when you stay here it’s priceless, we have one of the nicest spot on the planet 

We were very fortunate to spend 2 nights at this motel on a recent Canada Day weekend trip to Gaspe.
Even though we arrived late at night (~10pm), our room was still available and all set to go.

The room was clean and spacious, perfect for 2 people (1 of those being a notorious over-packer). We rented a room with kitchenette and much to my surprise they had dishes, pots/pans, ect for us to use and even dish soap and cloths to clean up after. The room was also equipped with other amenities (satellite tv, coffee maker, microwave, hot plate, mini fridge), which we took advantage of. No complaints about the bed or bathroom, plenty of linens to use.
A complimentary breakfast is offered and was quite nice, and even if you show up a little late, you can still enjoy a fresh pot of coffee with your cereal, toast, and fresh fruit!

The view was probably the best part of the hotel! The motel overlooks the beautiful waters of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence and with the warm sun we had, it was simply breathtaking!

The location is also pretty amazing! It's essentially in Forillon National Park and there are so many great activities to see and do there! The area of Cap-des-Rosiers is beautiful, be sure to take a drive along the water and stop to take lots of pictures (and enjoy a poutine at the Casse-Croute nearby!).

Overall this motel is just terrific, the only downside was the AC in our room was either not working properly or we didn't have the settings right, and it was pretty warm. But that being said, I'm sure had we mentioned it, the issue would have been solved.

Thanks for such great hospitality Alain! We really enjoyed the late night bon fire too!!
Merci!

Thank you so much for taking time to make such a nice comment, I must say that the very hot temperature is unusual here, but we will improve our rooms with ceiling fan & add a window on the back wall.
Thank you for being here

I will agree the host of this motel goes out of his way to welcome guests. The best thing this motel has going for it is the location - the views are out of this world. We happened to stay on what was probably the hottest night in July and the rooms only have one tiny window that will open so if you didn't have the screened in door open, say while you were sleeping, the air in there was really oppressive. No circulation of the fresh ocean air at all. The room we had was a little cramped for the value and we had stayed at few other places in Chandler and Matane on this trip and paid much less for larger and more comfortable rooms.

Thank you for your comment, that's what help us progress :) I'm sorry for the heat we never usually have that type of temperature here so that's why we are not équiped very well.
As we wanted to keep improving we already have but some fan with light for the ceiling and also plans to add more windows to make the air circulate better.
Thank you for being there
