“Beautiful cottage”
Reviewed 23 November 2013 via mobile

Quaint cottage in a quiet location, we loved our stay here. Port and chocolates to greet us, along with lovely organic goodies for breakfast....home made bread....coffee (with grinder).... Its these little touches that made the stay very comfortable....would recommend this place...ideal for 2 couples.

My husband and I stayed at the Daisy Randall cottage and found it to be a lovely, peaceful stay, with everything you needed.

We stayed for two nights. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom renovations were excellent!! That shower head awesome!! And being cooler at night the heating was great, reverse cycle aircon. The garden out the back was full of poppies in bloom and it was lovely to sit outside and eat breakfast in the sun.

We were given a lovely goody pack for breakfast which had some delicious home made bread! The kitchen is small but for the age of the cottage it has everything you need to make breakfast, lunch or dinner but we were visiting the Barossa Valley so we opted to try the local restaurants nearby!! We were not disappointed! Beautiful food and wine.

The location is great, walking distance to a small supermarket and a local pub which did serve take away sandwiches.

We would defiantly visit here again on our travels!

Daisy Randall is certainly a beautiful cottage in Spring as all the wildflowers bloom. Now it is early Summer and the old gnarled grapevine is winding its way across the verandah providing addition shade

We stayed is the Daisy cottage for 2 nights in November 2013. The place is adequate. In an otherwise expensive place to book accommodation (The Barossa Valley), this will meet your needs and won't see you remortgaging your home. The bathroom has recently been renovated and is well appointed with underfloor heating, but we found the hot water ran out after 10 minutes - which was surprising given the size of the hot water system out the back. This may have something to do with the amazing shower that seems to have a shower head that delivers about 40 litres of water a minute. The bed was comfortable and the heating worked well. The kitchen was small and difficult to work in - simply because of the lack of bench space - but it had everything that you would require including some of condiments and oil which was a nice touch. The biggest issue we had with the place was the infestation of mosquitos. We woke up covered in bites and only discovered the insect spray under the sink the following day. Despite trying to kill as many as possible before bed time - we just didn't get them all and again woke with more bites the next day. The window sills were covered in dead insects when we arrived. I would suggest a chat with the cleaner in an otherwise clean place. But the mosquito issue really needs addressing. Providing insect spray doesn't solve the problem - just defers the pest management to your guests - who are entitled to expect more. The cottage is 160+ years old, but I didn't really find the cracks in the walls all that endearing, rather concerned as to whether the building might collapse. Regretfully, I booked through booking.com which seem to provide inconsistent information to that of the owners. The checkout time on booking.com was different to the cottage guide (11am vs 10.30am), booking.com allowed me to enter an amex card when they don't accept amex and the address on the booking.com confirmation is not the address of the cottage. While I accept errors occur, if hoteliers use 3rd party providers to allow bookings, it is their responsibility to ensure the details are correct. Finally, location is fine - if a little quiet, but a car ride in any direction about 10 minutes will find you any of the amenities you might need above and beyond the offerings of Lyndoch. Fix the insect problem, cracks and hot water issues and this place would be better value for money.

Thank you for your review of Daisy Randall Cottage (one of the three Barossa Heritage Cottages around Lyndoch). We are conscious of the needs of budget travelers (that’s what we are when we travel) and so have kept our rates under AU$200 per night unlike most other self-contained accommodation options in the Barossa which are over $200 (including breakfast provisions)
We are glad you liked the bathroom as it is a feature of this cottage. That shower is just amazing – it feels like it is dumping water like there is no tomorrow but it is rated at only 12 litres per minute – within the waterwise guidelines set by SA Water for domestic showers. We are perplexed as to why you may have run low on hot water as the hot water system is a constant re-heat unit. It seemed to work OK for the guests who came after you.
Unlike modern houses, the kitchen in this 1850’s heritage cottage was never a large room. We have tried to include nearly everything you could want for basic meal preparation within the space limitations. Like many heritage buildings, there are movements that cause minor cracking. These occur at the change of seasons when walls heat and expand then cool and retract. It is an ongoing issue and we repair and repaint regularly.
Thankyou for letting us know about the mozzie invasion. Unfortunately, the neighbour has recently emptied their swimming pool in readiness for refilling for summer. The mosquitoes have had a field day in the small amount of water left in the pool from rainfall and are causing havoc for the neighbourhood. This has now been addressed with the neighbour.
We fully understand your frustrations at using a third party booking agent that is primarily set up for large hotels with 24/7 reception staff. We have tried, within the limitations provided by booking.com, to include the best information for our guests prior to arrival. It is of utmost importance to read through all of the information provided as what might seem important to you is often tucked away at the end by someone else. In saying that, your booking paperwork included the following “Please note that Barossa Heritage Cottages has several locations. You can check in at the address stated in the booking confirmation.” The booking confirmation stated “This cottage is located at 34 Gilbert Street, Lyndoch”
The booking.com website stated “Accepted credit cards Visa and Mastercard” and goes on to say under Important Information “Please note that Barossa Heritage Cottages does not accept payments with American Express credit cards.”. We too cannot fathom how some booking sites say one thing and then allow another. We phoned you immediately after you made your booking to get an alternative card type.
We have looked at your other Trip Advisor reviews around the globe and notice that you have ongoing similar issues with accommodation establishments. Booking direct with the establishment often means you get the best information prior to arrival and every effort can be made to ensure your expectations are met.

My grandmother and I stayed at the bandicoot nest for two nights. The cottage was located in the lovely little town of Lyndoch, a short drive to other surrounding Barossa towns, various wineries and attractions. Kim (our lovely host) met us at the cottage and provided a full tour and left us with a still warm freshly baked loaf of bread. The breakfast provisions were amazing with fresh eggs, tomatoes, a range of cereals and condiments, local orange juice, teas and coffee( espresso machine as well) and to die for wood smoked bacon from the Lyndoch butcher. The cottage is lovingly renovated and well appointed, with a cosy living room and great big king beds in each room. We were lucky to have a sunny day and had breakfast outside in the garden. My grandmother was very pleased with the cottage and we both very much enjoyed our stay. Thank you again Kim!

Overall the stay was amazing. The cottage has been beautifully renovated. very comfortable and homey feeling. (The two person spa bath was a highlight) Close to the main road into Lyndoch, which was great to go get pastries from the local bakery or stop into try some local wines at The Sheild. The provisions left for breakfast were great. particularly the smoked bacon! Yum! The open fire was left ready for us to lite up and was great to cuddle up on the couch while we had it going. Will definitely be back. Thank you for making our stay so special.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Coorawong Roost. Is perfect for a couple wanting to get away for a weekend.

We made a reservation on hotels.com for the Barossa Heritage Cottage for 2 adults, 2 kids and we ended up in another cottage called Daisy Randall at Lyndoch.
Daisy Randall was fine but we were charged an extra $50. This is a rip off and I am currently discussing this matter with my credit card company and with Hotels.com.

The reason of this extra $50 is that we had two kids. But we booked for 2 adults and 2 kids. See copy/paste of the hotels.com confirmation:

It is indeed a pity that our first Review on Trip Advisor is so negative. We pride ourselves in our operation of three heritage cottages in the Barossa - Our business has been operating successfully since 1994 and is certainly no fraudulent!
Firstly, Daisy Randall IS one of the Barossa Heritage Cottages - the other two are Currawong Roost and Bandicoot Nest. They are independently rated by AAA Tourism at 4.5 STARS
None of these cottages are suitable for children.
This guest group booked through a third party website that somehow allowed children to be booked but as they were "not allowed" it did not charge for them nor mention them on our copy of the Booking Confirmation
When the guest group arrived, it was explained that only one couple was booked, that the property did not cater for children and that in this instance (being New Year's Eve) the guests could be accommodated but with a nominal additional charge of AU$50 for the children. The Reviewer agreed and provided his credit card details to be charged with AU$50. He later changed his mind.
It is important to note that the Reviewer has reported this matter to his credit card company and they have dismissed his claim for a refund of the $50 charged.
We were pleased that in other respects, the Reviewer liked his accommodation!
