“'Guestpacker'!”
Reviewed 22 January 2014 for a stay in January 2014

A spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean guesthouse at backpacker prices. A great range of room sizes for singles, couples, families or even groups keen to explore the great produce of the terra rossa. Location ideal in the heart of Penola.

“Should be renamed as guesthouse”
Reviewed 15 December 2013 for a stay in October 2013

With the name "backpacker" I was dubious (even though I am a backpacker I don't like hostels) - but this place is lovely.
Is is so so clean, with fully stocked kitchen equipment and free use of BBQ, lovely comfy beds, nice showers and living room. Lovely large garden with secure parking in garages offered.
The owner and her family are lovely people, so helpful and informative.
I stayed a few weeks as I was working in a nearby vineyard, and I felt welcome the whole time.

Wether passing through or staying on vacation I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed!

“Absolutely Wonderful Place!”
Reviewed 1 December 2013 for a stay in November 2013

This place is such a treasure! We felt so welcomed. It was almost like staying with friends. The kitchen is wonderfully stocked. We decided to buy groceries and cook just so we could use the kitchen. Sandra is so full of information about the area. I would highly recommend this place to anyone going to this area.

“A wonderful home to share with a group of friends”
Reviewed 30 November 2013 for a stay in May 2013

Our group of 12 friends thoroughly enjoyed the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival in May 2013. The highlight was being able to all stay together at the Penola Back Packers in a house that had everything we needed, was lovely & had a well set up kitchen big enough to cope with us all. Being right in the centre of Penola was brilliant, so close to all the Festival activities. Having an outdoor area just across from the park really made us feel apart of the towns happenings on market day, great for Sunday brekky we enjoyed with local produce. As a group we couldn't have found better accommodation to suit our needs and we also enjoyed the company of 5 lovely international travellers staying too.

“A great holiday find”
Reviewed 10 September 2013 for a stay in September 2013

I stayed at Penola backpackers for 2 nights on a quick trip to the Limestone Coast. This is a 1930’s house converted to a backpacker’s but its set up like a home. The owners Sandra and Norm are very keen for you to feel at home – down to flowers and fresh lemons in the kitchen.
There are two dorm rooms – 4 to six beds each with really high quality mattresses. There’s a family room with a double and four bunks. The family room has a separate entrance. Plus several more double rooms – again with a new hotel quality beds.
I stayed in the double room facing Bowden Street. Again, the owners have set this up to be relaxing and homely. Great new bed, lots of hanging space, a good reading lamp and a selection of books are in the room. This trip I was travelling alone, and Penola Backpackers represented excellent value for money, great facilities and a friendly welcoming atmosphere.
The kitchen is large and very well equipped, fridge/freezer, stove, dishwasher and microwave. Lots of crockery and cooking utensils. Lots of pantry space too.
The large laundry room has a new industrial coin-op washing machine and dryer.
There are 2 toilets and 1 bathroom in the house and 2 brand new bathroom pods near the back door. There’s also a tv room with a dvd player. There’s wi-fi included with the room tariff. The backpacker’s has keyless entry and new modern locks on all the interior doors – all very secure.
Out the back is a reasonable sized yard and 3 car garage.
There’s a couple of good pubs and café’s nearby. In summer – the Penola pool is across the road. Lots of beautiful gardens and a park nearby. Close to Penola Visitor’s Centre. Short walk to the IGA and I went for a long walk around the town each morning - Penola is one of those places where the locals wave at you while you’re out walking. I even got an invite to the Penola Texas Holdem Poker night at Heyward’s Pub on Wednesday night.
There are so many wineries to choose from – Sandra made good suggestions about a couple to try – so I visited Zema, Balnaves and Patrick. Spent most of a day at Naracoorte Caves and fit in an extra wine tasting on the way home.
A wonderful short visit! I thank Sandra and Norm for their hospitality and highly recommend Penola Backpackers.
