“Lovely room but ........”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

My husband and I stayed for one night a month back in the Chinese themed room which was very nice with a lovely claw foot bath, and the cooked breakfast was yummy. However throughout the stay there was something not quite right, we did not feel particularly welcomed. On arrival, the lady was OK but despite me introducing myself, did not introduce herself. We were quickly shown to the room and the door to the breakfast room pointed out. The reason we had gone was to check the place out for a potential murder mystery night for my 50th but I am still awaiting a reply to my e-mail, despite saying I was staying on the weekend. Hence the day came and went and we made other arrangements. I see all the really positive comments on here and wonder if I am a little harsh but there was just that feeling that we were a little bit of an inconvenience.

Room Tip: I think you only get invited to have a wine by the fire if you are staying in the main house, which...

We stayed for two nights in the Mt Brown room. The very friendly and knowledgeable Amber welcomed us when we arrived and showed us to the room. It was a very good size and tastefully decorated in keeping with the time period of the house. Room felt very spacious and relaxing with access to the veranda and two large windows. There was also small area for hanging clothes between the bedroom and ensuite bathroom. I would have appreciated a luggage stand.

Bedroom had a king size bed, desk and chair, small lounge and tea and coffee making facilities on a small coffee table. It was very cold when we arrived and Amber turned on the air-conditioner for us.

I thought the ensuite bathroom lacked the luxury feel I had expected from seeing the room. There was a shower, toilet and sink. The shower head seemed to spray all around the edges and nothing in the middle. There was only a small table to put items on and no hooks for hanging towels or toiletry bag. Two towels, one mat, one hand towel and two flannels were provided. Toiletries supplied were adequate.

As it is a Bed and Breakfast continental breakfast was included in the room rate - $250 per night. A full cooked breakfast was an extra $20 per head. We opted for the cooked breakfast and it was delicious - eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach and toast. I did try to notify the owner via email that we needed soy milk and gluten free bread but received no answer to the email. We took our own milk and bread with us and the friendly chef used these. Continental breakfast was muesli, wheat-bix, stewed fruits, yoghurt, bread, butter, preserves and pastries plus percolated coffee (no Nespresso) and a selection of teas.

We had access to the guest lounge where Simon lit a fire and tended to this throughout the evening. This is a very nice room for relaxing, having a wine, listening to music, talking to other guests or just reading. There is a guest fridge just outside the room which was very handy to have for wines and cheeses. I enjoyed looking through the photo books of various weddings that had been hosted at the house.

There was a problem with our air-conditioner on the first night and it didn't do much heating, however, it was not a cold night so we managed. Amber had a look at this for us the next day and got it humming along and heating nicely.

So overall an enjoyable stay and I would recommend to others looking for accommodation in York. Would be great for groups - the breakfast room was large and could host a special dinner.

Room Tip: Not all rooms in the main house have ensuite bathrooms - some have private baths but they are down t...

We thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay at Faversham House as part of our car club's weekend away. Our upstairs room, the Mt Brown suite, featured lovely views across York and is linked to the outside verandah. The downstairs drawing room, where we gathered for drinks before dinner, is beautifully furnished to suit the house's history. Our host Nola gave us an entertaining introduction to Faversham's history after a wonderful, cooked breakfast in the stately dining room. Afterwards we took up the option to tour the house and grounds with Richard, coming away with a real insight into life in the early times of Perth and York's white settlement. Their passion for restoring and improving this house and property truly shines through.

Room Tip: The honeymooner's Mt Brown suite is a great choice but also heard praise from other members of o...

We visited this historical homestead with a party of 16 members from the Mustang and Shelby Owners Club. Some of us had Courtyard Rooms whilst others had rooms upstairs inside the "House". All were very comfortable and different in their respective style, Our room was The Avon and featured a four poster bed. From the moment of our arrival till our departure Nola and Richard and their staff were exceptional hosts. The drawing room where we congregated upon arrival and for pre dinner drinks was roomy and cosy with the open fire blazing away. Dinner was held at a Restaurant recommended by Our Hosts and the fire was kept stoked up for our return where we once again congregated for the remainder of our evening. Breakfast next morning was either Continental or Fully Cooked and the selection was delicious.

Room Tip: All rooms are comfortable - The Avon was our choice.

York is rich in history and historical buildings and Faversham House is the centrepiece. Not an imposing building but rather one that beckons you to come a little closer. Once in the grounds her charms become apparent. We were only overnight guests and had chosen the courtyard rooms which were perfectly adequate.... but sometime we must return to sample the piece de resistance, the house itself. The dining room where breakfast was served was a taster. Host Nola gave us a special glimpse into the origins of Faversham House and Richard fascinated me with his passion for dry stane walls and bricklaying. My wife and I played Petanque (Boule to francophiles) on the front lawn as the sun was setting serenaded by birds seeking a roosting place for the night. We are not ones for dissecting the intricacies of whether the bathrobes were white or red; taking photographs of the cuisine and discussing the lack of croissants etc. Atmosphere, ambience, call it what you will is more memorable than a good steak, or under floor heating even. We will return. When, I do not know but I hope that Nola and Richard are still there and that old charm is not messed with.

I took my partner to Faversham House for her birthday weekend and it was spectacular! The accommodation was the highlight of our entire trip. We visited Avon and Swan Valleys and by far the best thing about the weekend was our stay in the Hotel. We booked the Mount Brown suite and it was definitely worth it. The access to the balcony and views of Mount Brown from the suite's bed was very scenic. The cooked breakfast was amazing in the morning and highly recommend it. Thank you so much for the excellent hospitality and we will be visiting again soon!

Room Tip: Book the Mount Brown Suite

Hi Ben Great to hear both of you enjoyed the stay. Isn't it lovely to give a gift that you get to enjoy as well!! Thanks for the comments on the breakfasts - poached eggs are such a lovely way to start the day, especially when the eggs are so fresh and natural.

Please come back soon - such a pleasure to have our home shared with gorgeous folks.

We had just one night but it would have been lovely to stay longer. Nola and Richard were excellent hosts, the cooked breakfast was fantastic. The courtyard room is snug and the whole place has charm and history.
