I love to hike but if you don't like harder hikes this is not the place for you.

The waterfalls here are very impressive. Several of them seem to be 100 feet tall or more. The volume of water flowing from the river is pretty big as well, compared to other falls in the area. I understand that you can bushwack down the Horsepasture to see even more falls.

The new parking area is very nice, but if you went there years ago, its a little confusing. Most of the maps in the area have the waterfall names in the wrong order, but its not hard to figure them out when you see them. This is not a hike for beginners or those with low stamina, this is rated moderate to strenuous, but if you plan on taking your time, maybe a picnic, and definantly your camera, you will be glad you did. It is beautiful!

Gorges State Park may still be under construction, but the waterfalls on the Horsepasture River are outstanding.

My husband and I took our nine and twelve year old children on this hike. It was amazing! I must say that it was a little more than we had bargained for, considering we had to cross two large streams and the hike covered both state park and national forest lands.

That being said, we are thrilled that we had the experience. We all enjoyed the views and the trek.

If you go, call Gorges State Park before you go to be certain that the trails are open. There's a lot of construction going on at the state park right now and as of last week, the trail head was closed. Currently, it is now open.

The total hike out to Rainbow Falls and back is 3 miles. The path is narrow and steep at times. It crosses two large streams and follows the Horsepasture River for much of the way.

The scenic views of the river and falls is well worth the hike!
