This hotel was grand and interesting, the room was clean but needed some updating. My only big criticism: the room was very warm, the ac did not work, even with windows open and outside temps at a cool 40, the room remained to warm for a comfortable night sleep. The hotel did finally provide a portable fan which did help. Also this hotel is walk up,no elevator, not a problem for us but do consider this if you have some handicap that prevents walking up stairs. All in all , a good value for the money.

First of all, I give everyone who works here that we came across 5 stars for helpfulness, service and friendliness. The people staffing the check-in desk graciously reworked our package plan when we had to leave after only 2 nights, instead of the reserved 3. The bartenders, dining room manager and waitstaff were all so friendly and attentive. They all made us feel truly welcome.
We had 2 dinners in the dining room (one a special New Year's Eve multi-course meal). Veggies were well prepared and fresh. My sirloin steak the first night there was a bit on the rare side instead of medium rare as ordered, but nevertheless it tasted very good. My husband's prime rib on New Year's Eve was definitely too rare, for he ordered it medium. After he sent it back, it was more cooked, though still a bit underdone. Good flavor, though.
The breakfast buffet each day was just all right. Our made-to-order omelettes both had an off-flavor; the danish weren't as good as they looked, but the coffee was plentiful and flavorful.
Maybe because it's winter, the main lodge reminded me of a ski resort - lots of wood on the walls, fireplaces, comfy chairs and sofas. All in all, a very pleasant, historic-feeling atmosphere.
Our king room in one of the nearby small buildings was, well, drab. Lots of brown, beige, tan; dark furniture, small windows, dim lights, cluttered. As other reviewers have pointed out, it badly needs renovation. The furniture, wood on the walls, and inexpensive woodwork are nicked and gouged. The bed was comfortable, however, and we were given 2 brand new non-feather pillows when we asked for something without feathers.
We wish they offered a king-size bed in an upgraded room, but those rooms only have 2 doubles or queens.

Out most recent of many stays. Stayed in a second floor master double in the Putter Lodge. Spacious room with microwave, refrigerator, sink area and large separate shower/toilet. Beds were comfortable, free wifi connection was good. In addition to the golf course, it is great for golfers as there is a range, putting greens and a 3 hole practice loop. Grass tennis court, outdoor pool and large fitness center. It is family owned so is different from the large chain hotels. This is our favorite in the Southern Pines area and will continue to return. The only negative was our stay coincided with the kids Golfari camp, and we could hear music from the evening's awards ceremony and party.

Room Tip: Master rooms are the most spacious

Historic, but OLD. Limited facilities for everything, but golf. We were offered no bell assistance and had to lug suitcases and clubs down the stairs. Unfortunately we also had roaches in our room. We had booked a king bed and the Inn called us the week before asking if we would switch to 2 queens to accommodate a large wedding party. We agreed so that we wouldn't spoil their fun. When we got there (a Sunday night) there was no evidence of a wedding party and we were stuck with 2 queen beds instead of our first choice. With several other wonderful lodging choices in the area, stay elsewhere, but play golf here. A wonderful course. The money for Pine Needles just isn't a good value.

The hotel is historic, but the rooms and accomodations show it as well. The rooms were clean and comfortable, but you would think you had stepped back in time to the 1940's. Just be aware of what you are getting. Still a nice place and experience.

We arrived late to the hotel, and at check in was greeted by an unfriendly front desk person - no smile, no greeting, no nothing. Luckily check in was quick and we were on our way. The "resort" is very quaint, definitely lodge/cabin style and 4 rooms were in one building with many buildings throughout the property. Building are old, but well kept and lawns are manicured nicely.

When we opened the door to our room...somewhat a nasty surprise to see how small the room was!! (room 133 in the "birdie lodge"). It had been updated, carpet was great underfoot, flat screen TV which are all nice touches BUT i would not recommend staying in this room if there is more than 1 person!!! The bed itself was comfy BUT the sheets looked well used (old) and there were only 4 feather pillows on the King sized bed, they had cream colored pillow cases on them, which, at first glance, we thought they were stained and dirty because the sheets were white! (who does that!? white sheet, cream pillow cases)....we had to turn on all the lights and inspect the pillows just to make sure. Though the bed was clean, with the lack of proper pillows (feather pillows flatten to almost nothing when you lay on them) and only a blanket on the bed, this caused us to have the worse 2 nights sleeps ever! :( Combine that with the A/C unit sounding like a trailer truck barreling down the highway every time the air came on....we left the hotel so tired and exhausted from lack of sleep.

Bathroom is way too small also - you can only fit 1 person in there at a time. Placement of the small fridge right next to the entrance of the small bathroom also made it difficult to walk in/out of the bathroom, me and my bf kept bumping into one another. I did like the soap (coconut and lime) and the heat lamp, but ...there was no space to put my make up bags!!!

The room also came with its own coffee/tea but we never used this....and also an ice bucket. But strangest thing really...was the fact that while we had an ice bucket...where on earth do you go to get ice???? apparently at the front desk area (but who will be walking outside in the dark at 20 degree weather to get some? not me).

On the morning of check out, (at 9am!!) the housekeeper started vacuuming outside our room and the room next door. We were woken up pretty violently from the sound of the vacuum! The walls are so thin, it felt like she was vacuuming in our room!!! The housekeeping staff need to keep in mind that there are guests in the other rooms and should not make loud noises until after check out time or a more decent time on a Sunday morning.

Overall, if you are a golfer and spend most of your time out of the room, need only basic amenities, and want a quit entry/exit to your room/car, then this is a wonderful place. BUT, if you want to have a good sleep and proper amenities with friendly staff, I would go and stay elsewhere. We tried it, I really wanted to like it.... but.... it was the first time and last time for us. Sorry Pine Needles... I need sleep and room to move when I'm on a getaway!!!

Room Tip: The 2 Double Bed rooms are a lot bigger than the King Bed rooms, so if you want space to move around...
