“PineNeedles and Mid Pines Classic Donald Ross at half the price!”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

Just completed our 20th annual fall trip to PineNeedles. First the golf: Pine Needles is relatively short, but don't let that discourage you. The real real test starts from 100 yards and in. Great greens that seem to be large and inviting until you watch your ball roll and roll into one of Ross's famous bunkers. Mid Pines has just reopened after a 4 month renovation that brought it back to all of it's original glory. It will be acclaimed as one of the best Donald Ross courses that you can play. Scenic, beautiful, and iconic in a natural state with wide fairways, no rough, and native grass and sand waste areas. Did I mention brand new greens with a wonderful hybrid turf? It reminds me of the newly restored Pinehurst #2, and you can play it for about one third of the cost. Stay at PineNeedles with their very comfortable rooms, and make sure you eat and drink at the historic bar at PineNeedles.

Room Tip: Ask for a Master Room. A little bit more money, but larger, with fridge, and a wet bar.

I enjoyed my room at the par lodge very nice and private even if it's located in a house with 4 other entrances to rooms but each have their own entrance. A little out dated for the younger generation but nostalgic for the older generation. Loved the historic bar in the main lodge.

This is one of those old gems of a resort - very quiet and sophisticated. It is a bit dated ,and midweek in August, empty, but we got a great rate and played a great golf course. It was very hot there and the air conditioning was not quiet up to the task, but otherwise the room was lovely.

I cannot rave enough about the staff, it is service like you expect form 5 star hotels (and rarely get anymore) respectful, friendly, engaging. Both in the lounge and from the bellmen we felt very welcomed and comfortable.

I recently spent 2 nights at Pine Needles. We purchased the 'unlimited golf , breakfast and dinner' package. The golf course is wonderful! Very manicured, pristine and challenging. Loved it! The dining room is very dated and menu is heavy and needs revision. The first night we were the only 2 people dining. The server was great but she felt that everything from the kitchen , dining room and server uniforms needed updating. We agreed. We will definitely return but rely on the bar menu of hamburgers and salad for eats as it was not worth the extra cost for the dining room. It is ALL about the golf here. Perhaps more people would purchase food if they had an outdoor BBQ with the basics.

Room Tip: Rooms are basic but quiet and decent. Nothing fancy.

We were originally booked to stay at Mid Pines, a sister property across the street from Pine Needles. The conditions at Mid Pines were awful and I left there in tears. My husband made a call to Pine Needles ... They had a room available! They had a wonderful room for my boys and me, with two queen beds and a large sitting area. Unlike the Mid Pines property everything was clean. Our room opened out to a nice patio and overlooked the tennis courts and the putting green. Pine Needles has a great atmosphere for families; there is plenty to do and everything is centrally located. Our meals were great, especially breakfast. Pine Needles was our port in a storm and I am so grateful that the accommodated us on such short notice. There staff could not have been kinder or more understanding.

My husband joined the out of town membership program here a few years ago for the golf. I think it was one of the best things he's done in years when it comes to spending 'more money' on the love of his life. (And I'm not talking about his wife.) Thank goodness the lodge and surrounding villas are cozy and comfortable. I could sit all day in my room and read. Food is as good as any 'fancy restaurant' you might visit in the resort area. Had the fabulous Sunday brunch across the road at MidPines with the best friend chicken ever eaten according to husband and friends. Also had delicious grilled romaine salad and a bowl of spicy corn and chicken chowder at the bar at Pine Needles. It was delicious! This resort is our vacation home we never bought!

Room Tip: The long rooms in birdie, par, and bogey are our favorites. Have a sitting area with a view, 2 TVs...

Just arrived home from a week of Golfari and we had a wonderful time. We stayed in the Ross Lodge which had four bedrooms with a large common area where we had much laughter. Our rooms overlooked the instruction area and the first fairway. They were very clean and comfortable.

Our instruction was excellent, the teachers are top notch.

The food was good, especially the fried chicken. I would not call it fine dining but you do not go hungry; it is more comfort food.

I plan to return with my husband and friends.
