My husband and I stay at B&Bs all around the country and often we find a beautiful place to stay, or very accommodating owners, or good food, or just a relaxing place to stay. But the Robert Ruark Inn is the total package! The Inn is gorgeous. Virginia's Room is amazingly large, with a very comfortable king-sized bed and a fireplace, and the bathroom is to die for. The over-sized shower has multiple shower heads making showering in the morning like a trip to the spa. The rest of the Inn is beautifully decorated and has multiple charming places, inside and out, to relax in. My favorite is the rocking chairs on the front porch where you can also wave and speak to the friendly townsfolk as they walk by. As if this is not enough, the owners, Rick and Linda, make you feel like royalty. They are charming, accommodating, and helpful and Rick gives the most amazing tours of Southport. The breakfast is also great and if you are looking for a treat later, Rick and Linda also own a charming tea house, Southport Tea House, that will complete your Southport experience. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the location also. It is perfectly placed such that we could walk to the shops, restaurants, and the water (two blocks to anything!). We never moved our car. This Inn is my favorite find and is one that we will definitely return to every chance we get.

This is truly a wonderful experience you don't want to miss. We actually enjoyed it so much, we have been back and already scheduling a return trip. The home is gorgeously decorated with rich antique furniture, yet it is very cozy and comfortable. Love having a private bathroom for each bedroom. The friendly Innkeepers make you feel like family and provide many wonderful treats for the guests. The delicious breakfasts served are not your typical bed and breakfast foods. Rick and Linda really make you feel at home, and you can tell they enjoy having their guests!

Room Tip: First floor room has a big bathroom with a special full body shower!

What a great place to spend a night! The Inn is beautifully landscaped and decorated. The owners couldn't be nicer. The breakfast couldn't have been tastier. Simply how B&B's should be done! The added bonuses of wine in the evening, snacks and beverages throughout the day and bicycles at your disposal just put it over the top. When in Southport head to Robert Ruark Inn. And definitely take advantage of Rick's guided golf cart tour of this quaint little town.

What a lovely inn! My husband and I continued our North Carolina after-Christmas trip with a visit to Southport. We didn't know when we left New Bern if we would stay overnight in Southport so I didn't make a reservation. Upon arrival we decided we wanted to stay overnight and found the Robert Ruark Inn. We appeared unannounced at the inn's front door was was warmly greeted by owner/inn keeper, Rick. He Invited us in and showed us the available rooms. We chose (or rather I chose) Virginia's room, the only guest room on the first floor.

What a lovely room and bath--king size bed, functioning gas fireplace, individual copper sinks recessed in two gorgeous antique vanities (lamps and a lighted make-up mirror on the vanities), large double shower with body jets and ceiling "rain" spray! We enjoyed the room so much that we stayed a second night.

After a sumptuous breakfast Rick took us touring on one of his large golf carts. What fun--even if it was cold and windy! (I'm a Nicholas Spark's fan so was naturally interested in seeing the filming locations of Safe Haven.) Rick had extensive knowledge of the historic homes and their backgrounds. Additionally, he had knowledge of filming sites of the various movies that were made in Southport.

We ate at the Cape Fear Restaurant on the water in downtown Southport--good local food and atmosphere. The following day we ate at the Fishy Fish Cafe, also on the water, and were entertained through the window by a porpoise!

Before leaving town we visited Moore's Street Market, which offered a look into the past of a small town market and cafe--yet offered current specialities such as cuppucino.

And lastly, across the street at the Dosher Thrift Store I found some last minute treasurers! (Proceeds from sales are donated to the Dosher Memorial Hospital and Nursing Center.)

We definately plan to return to Southport and the Robert Ruark Inn!

We loved reading your review and greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience at the Robert Ruark Inn. It was a pleasure meeting you both. It made us so happy to know that you enjoyed your stay so much, you extended it. That meant a lot to us. We were beaming!

I appreciate your feedback on the tours as well. That was something we added two years ago and have had a great response. It is always great to hear how our guests enjoyed it and benefited from it. Honestly...we love giving the tours, too. It helps us show off our special little coastal village, Southport.

Thank you again for choosing the Robert Ruark Inn and for the wonderful review. We wish you both the very, very best in 2014! Hope to see you again.

What a wonderful way to spend a quiet Christmas! The Inn was beautifully decorated, Christmas carols were playing as we walked in-- perfect!! Rick greeted us warmly and showed us around - explaining all the "extras" the Inn has to offer. (Wine and cheese in the afternoons, fudge, candies, coffee) One of our favorite parts of the visit was the tour of Southport that Rick took us on. Don't miss this !! Breakfast was divine - This is a very special place in a very special town. Linda was a gracious host as well - although we didn't get to see much of her since she also runs a Tea Room in town!! Rick and Linda are hospitable and welcoming. We will definitely return!

The Ruark House is stately, historic, beautifully furnished and tastefully decorated. A stay at the inn offers everything guests could desire from commodious bedrooms and bathing facilities, to small touches like homemade fudge and Peppermint Patties, a wide selection of beverages, bicycles, and cozy outdoor areas for relaxing, to golf cart tours around the neighborhood. Breakfast was excellent especially Trish's homemade Praline Muffins. We will definitely choose this inn on future getaways to Southport.

Room Tip: One of the bedrooms only offers a tub for bathing, so you might want to choose a different room if y...

Thank you so much for your lovely review. We really appreciate the time you took to let us know of your experience. Yes...I agree. Trish's Praline muffins are awesome. She is a great addition to our team. Although we think it, however, it is great to hear it from guests like you. That is where the opinion is most important!!!!

I am sorry to hear that you did not know that the bathtub works both as a tub and shower. All our rooms actually do have showers. Two rooms have clawfoot tubs that also have showers with both rainfall shower heads and hand held shower heads. We try and make sure all our guests know how to use all capabilities and how to adjust the strength to meet their individual needs. All the private bathrooms were created and part of the Robert Ruark Inn's complete restoration just five years ago in 2008. Again, I apologize for not making sure you knew of the functionality. In addition to the two clawfoot tubs that serve as tubs and showers, we have two rooms with stand-up showers with one shower that has multiple jets.

Thank you so much for your review!!! We appreciate you choosing the Robert Ruark Inn and hope to see you again one day.

All our very best for the upcoming Thanksgiving and for the entire Holiday Season and new year!

What a lovely experience! From the beautiful (and large!) room, to the claw foot tub, to the awesome wine & appetizers....we were so impressed. And not to mention the bikes available for exploring the waterfront. Rick was an excellent host and made us a breakfast to die for! Although my husband and I love just down the road in Wilmington, we felt like we were worlds away. Cannot wait for our next visit!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. It was a pleasure meeting you both. We are so glad you had such a great time. Nice to know you enjoyed the bicycles, too. We felt that was an important amenity for our guests. Southport is such a lovely city in which to ride. We love it ourselves. We are always thinking, "what would we want?" That's why we have the bikes, the Aveda hair products, afternoon wine & cheese and 24/7 coffee/tea station. It's so nice to know you enjoyed it.

Again, thanks so very much for choosing the Robert Ruark Inn and for taking the time to let us know of your experience. We hope to see you again one day and wish you all the very, very best.
