My wife and I just celebrated our 15th at this inn. We could not be more pleased with the whole experience! The innkeeper ( David ) was so friendly we felt like family instead of guests. The house itself is just beautiful and the room we stayed in was awesome, we had the Captain Adkins Room. The food David prepared was so tasty we will be dieting for the near future. All in all we would recommend this Inn to anyone going to the Southport area. We plan to return many times.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the smell of cinnamon bread baking and stepped into the charming atmosphere of the Robert Ruark Inn. David is the quintessential host with his instantly likeable personality and unpretentious demeanor. Guests instantly feel welcome here. Southport is a pleasant Southern riverfront town with restaurants and shops, yet it retains its maritime heritage. The Visitors' Center is a block down the street. I read Robert Ruark's The Old Man and the Boy to get a feel for the author's loving relationship with Captain Adkins and Hanson Ruark, his two grandfathers, and exactly what it was like living with them in Southport as a boy growing up in the l920's. The two best rooms at the inn require a choice between Captain Adkins' Room (with a small balcony on the second floor frontside) or Virginia's Room (on the first floor with a fabulous jetted shower). David's shrimp and grits for breakfast rivaled (and beat out) any fine dining shrimp and grits entree we have ever eaten, and we live in a similar NC seaport town ourselves! A most enjoyable overnighter enroute to visit friends in Charlotte. Thank you, David, for your hospitality.

The Robert Ruark Inn is quite simply a great weekend destination to unwind and enjoy the scenic beauty and historic legacy of Southport, NC. To those of you not familiar with Southport, it is a small seaside fishing town 45 minutes from its busier neighbor to the north, Wilmington, NC. The Ruark Inn, has been completely restored, and retains all the Victorian charm of the house Robert Ruark himself spent many years enjoying...It's easy to see where Ruark the author drew some of his inspiration for his many books. The Inn proprietor David, is happy to share some of the many great stories regarding the Inn's history as well as Ruark himself. If that isn't enough to entice you to go, David is also a GREAT chef, and prepares individual breakfast dishes for whomever is in your group! Just sitting out on the veranda, and enjoying a relaxing breakfast, we met people casually walking by, and universally all complimented the beauty of the Inn! The people in Southport are some of the friendliest around! I cannot rate this wonderful Bed and Breakfast on a 5-point scale....How about a 6 then!

We were pleasantly suprised with the room and accomodations. They were very clean and tastefully appointed. The innkeeper was very hospitable and provided information on local events and businesses. The food was exceptional from a gourmet breakfast to wine and cheese in the evenings. We spend a very relaxing weekend and enjoyed seeing Southport. But our most enjoyable time was spend enjoying the Inn, the innkeeper and the great food.

For fans of Robert Ruark, world famous journalist and author of the best-selling “The Old Man and the Boy” and “The Old Man’s Boy Grows Older," a stay at the Robert Ruark Inn is a must. For those not acquainted with the author and his heartwarming stories of boyhood adventures in and around Southport, NC, exciting tales of African safaris and world travel, all visitors will enjoy the beautiful décor, the down-home, Southern breakfasts and the wonderful hospitality of the innkeeper, David Gale. Thank you to the fine folks at the Robert Ruark Inn for the great time my wife and I had and also for preserving and sharing an important legacy of America’s greatest outdoor writer. We will be coming back, hopefully soon!

We stayed in the Robert Ruark Inn in Southport while visiting family and in celebration of our wedding anniversary. My husband and I have been coming to this area for years and have never experienced the level of service and accomodations we received at this Inn. The innkeeper, David, felt like a member of our family when we left, and was a most gracious host. The location is perfect as you can walk to everything (restaurants, shops, waterfront). The restoration of this inn is breathtaking and the rooms and baths are wonderful. Breakfast was awesome both mornings we were there (I highly recommend the shrimp and grits). Even so, it was the friendly manner of David that truly stood out. We are looking forward to our next visit - we almost wrote a negative review so that it would be empty when we returned!

My new wife and I stayed at The Robert Ruark after our wedding. It was an amazing place to stay and David, the inn keeper was very accomodating. The rooms are beautiful! They have all the Victorian charm you could hope for but have been updated with modern ammenities. The food was also amazing! David laid out some snacks for us for after the wedding; his fudge is excellent. We had asked him to only prepare a light breakfast for us the next morning as we had a brunch with our families later that morning. He went a little overboard and we were glad he did! He made the best shrimp and grits I have ever tasted! We thought we were only going to sample the breakfast... well, we both cleaned our plates. The inn is incredible and David's hospitality puts it over the top!
