This was a nice, small museum that had a lot of various exhibits and trinkets surrounding former sea ventures. It even had a periscope that went from the floor and through the ceiling so you could look onto the water toward Bald Head Island. It's a small museum that you would probably only spend about an hour max.

We took a half day trip to Southport (we would've probably stayed longer, but it was really cold) and it was nice to spend some time indoors at the museum. I would definitely recommend going if you're in the area, but it might not be worth a special trip.

Thank Ken G

We noticed a long long tubular box outside of the museum and were advised that it housed the submarine periscope which had been installed into the museum. Of course we had to investigate further. What a wonderful museum. The knowledgeable volunteers who assist are charming. Much to see and enjoy and a great break from shopping. To be able to look through the periscope at Southport and the surrounding area was fantastic - a sort of bird's eye view of the entire area. Just wonderful!

I confess to loving local museums. There's really no better way to pick up the local flavor. This one is nicely organized and tells the area's history very well. The collection of model boat is impressive and staff is very friendly.

I liked their attention to historical details, and their exhibit on locations used for recent filming of movies and tv shows in Southport.

There are only a few Maritime Museums in North Carolina and this one is FABULOUS!!! The exhibits are exceptional! There is incredible value and worth every second. And to make it even better, it is free. You can make a donation if you'd like but there is no pressure at all.

I highly recommend the NC Maritime Museum at Southport!!!
P.S. Don't forget to see the 360 degree view from the historic scope.

Thank Rick and Linda P
