Prime location, convenience of the beach and fabulous ocean views are the highlight of this oceanfront rental. The house is small but adequate for our needs with 4 adults and 3 small children. Everyone had comfortable bedrooms. The layout upstairs could use some thinking through as the bedroom is street side and the little sitting/tv room has the best view in the house. I think if the room were to have minor privacy updates it would be an absolutely perfect bedroom where the sliding glass door could be opened at night for the sounds and breeze from the breathtaking ocean view which would have been the icing on the cake for a perfect beach vacation. There is a family room downstairs with large TV for the kids. We were certainly not there to watch television. The upstairs deck was my favorite spot hands down. The kitchen with its nice upgrade was adequately stocked and lacked nothing we needed for cooking. A gas grill would have been preferred over the charcoal grill available since we had to inconveniently roll it off the deck to the side of the house as we worried about a fire hazard. I'm not sure every renter would have done the same. The washer and dryer are very old and the dryer runs extremely hot, which also may be a fire hazard. I had to run it on no heat for hours for that reason. We had a wonderful week on TI and I am glad we chose Doyle's Solitude for our stay. I would be willing to pay more to stay there again with some updates and less beat up furnishings than what's currently there. All in all it was a good choice and currently would meet the needs of a small family on a slight budget.
This house is charming. Its one of those old Surf City Houses that is in the process of really being fixed up nicely. The owners splurged for Ralph Lauren Bed coverings which were nice, but the bedrooms lacked good furniture. Honestly, who can go without a mirror when getting yourself ready to go out somewhere? The beds were comfortable though. The living room has nice seating, but could use more effective tables. Before we arrived, we were told that the oven in the house was not working. However, they did get a new oven installed before we started unpacking. The rest of the kitchen was really nice, updated cabinets and new fridge and appliances. All of the drawers have the no slam feature which is nice when traveling with a bunch of men. The first time we tried to do laundry, however, the washing machine flooded the kitchen. By the time we called to report that problem, the AC had broken down also. The washer was fixed very promptly, but the AC remained broken for another day before it was fixed. It was good that we had some strong breezes that we could let flow through the house to cool it off. The screened in porch really helped with that, and we only saw one bug in the house the whole week we were down. We ate on the picnic table on the porch a lot, which was nice for a big family. There was plenty of space to put the pack n play for my baby upstairs in the extra sitting room that has its own TV and balcony overlooking the ocean. Its a perfect place for young people to get away from the grownups and play as well. I feel like most of the things that needed to be replaced got done the week we were there, so whoever stays there next should have no problems! Maybe you can persuade them to buy new shower heads and clean the tubs out really well? Lewis Reality was very helpful and prompt at responding to our problems with the house. The owner even refunded us 100 dollars for our troubles during the week. I'd stay there again. :)
