Carawans was recommended to us for a visit to Lake Mattamuskeet, and we found in not only extremely clean and comfortable, but very convenient for visiting the refuge. It is basic. .. although they have other accommodations, the "hotel" section where we stayed had showers only, and if you expect a lot of extra details, this may not be for you.....but if you are there to see the birds and wildlife, and want a clean spot nearby to rest your head after exploring, you will be fine...direct tv in rooms, coffee pots, microwave, and fridges, too! (Remember, this is hotel ONLY..they do have other options!). Nice pond out back, right outside entrance to refuge, and the only thing you really need to remember is food...there are very very few nearby places to eat! And if you do need a little extra something, Lisa is on hand to do her best, and very dedicated to making your stay pleasant. It was just perfect for us while wandering the reserve, and we will be back, although next time I will pack a thermos to carry onto reserve, and will be sure to stock up on high energy snacks. one of the best trips we have had in a while, and lisa was an excellent hostess

Room Tip: Be sure to pack food...you are a good ways from any convenience, and be very sure to fill up on gas...

If your a nature lover, bird watcher or photographer this is the place to be. Visiting Lake Mattamuskeet and Swan Quarter has been on my bucket list for a long time, and now I wish I had come sooner.I visited during the early part of December 2013, the variety of birds and wildlife that were on and around the lake were AMAZING. I stayed in a cabin #1, Mattamuskeet Retreat, I found the cabin to be clean, nicely decorated and in close proximity to the lake, great hiking trails and the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters. I give this location a A+ and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quite place to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area and the abundant wildlife.

I've stayed here yearly for the past five years or so at least. It is a jumping off place to catch the early ferry from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke. The motel rooms are basic, but well-kept. There is wifi, cable/satellite TV. The owners live on site and are very accommodating. One year we limped on a bad tire and Lisa Carawan made a few calls and found us a replacement and got the shop owner to put it on for us on a weekend.

The motel is in the edge of the Mattmuskeet Wildlife Refuge, a popular hunting and fishing spot.

The website lists some cabins that are more upscale, but I've never stayed in one. The website gives an accurate description of what they offer.

Warning: Swan Quarter is a very rural area. The motel does not have a restaurant and there are no restaurants nearby. The bugs can be fierce.

My partner and I stayed in the Pond Breeze Cabin for 3 nights. The cabin was cute and very clean. We were greeted by Lisa the day we checked in. Our cabin faces a pretty pond outlined with trees and only 20 ft from our rocking chairs on the front porch. If you want quiet, this place has it abundance. We definitely recc this place to slow down and unwind. Great location for visiting the Outer Banks and Ocracoke. Will be back.

My family and I spent a single night at the Carawan's Motel in order to catch the first ferry in the morning. Given the sparsity of motels in the vicinity of Swanquarter, let alone information about them, I just wanted to share our experience.

The motel is located adjacent to the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and is definitely geared towards fishermen and hunters. There's a bate & decoy shop, and a few buildings worth of motel rooms and cabins, as well as a large pond in the back, with a fish cleaning station. The owners also live on the premises. Most of the guests seem to leave very early and get back fairly late.

One of the motel buildings was being rebuilt but the one we stayed at had several adjacent rooms, with a front deck area, and was recently updated. The floors were tiled, walls were recently painted, with a new TV, large bathroom, two beds, and a coffee maker. They also let us stay with our dog, without any additional cost or deposit. If you're expecting some kind of quaint B&B, you'll be disappointed but if you want something that's relatively inexpensive, clean, well maintained, close to the ferry, and a bit more interesting that a Super 8, then it's definitely something to consider.

The only negatives I can think of is the lack of cell coverage, remoteness of the location, and wireless internet that didn't work when we were there. The front desk also appears to be sporadically manned and if you call, you leave a message, and the owner will get back with you. It's a slightly strange, albeit understandable system that makes sense for a family operated place.

We'll definitely stay again on our next layover before going to Ocracoke.

We stopped overnight at the Carawan's Motel before catching the morning Swan Quarter - Ocracoke Ferry in September 2008.

The owner was very friendly and greeted us in person when we arrived. She had left our porch left on and, before bidding us goodnight, made sure we had enough towels.

Our room was in the motel. The walls are cinder block, the carpeting thin and worn and the window-unit air conditioner wheezed all night long. That said, the bathroom was clean and the bed squishy but adequate.

I was amazed that there were not more options in the vicinity considering Swan Quarter is a departure point for the Ocracoke Ferry. The other disappointment is that there is no good coffee for miles! It would be super if the little store attached to the motel featured some basic, good coffee.

This motel is just adequate, but it's proximity to the ferry makes it useful and the friendly staff will make for a possible repeat visit on our next trip to the Outer Banks.
