“Quaint get-away for leisure and rest, with easy access to Mattamuskeet Reserve and the Ocracoke Ferry.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 November 2010

My husband and I found Tunnell Farmhouse B&B to be a quaint place for leisure and rest, with easy access to Mattamuskeet Reserve and the Ocracoke Ferry. Sandra and Dick Tunnell has turned it into a comfortable home away from home. We stayed a couple nights so we could see and photograph the fowl at Mattamuskeet before traveling to nearby Ocracoke for a few days' stay. The farmhouse was well equipped with necessities, a good variety of continental breakfast items, an exercise room and plenty of games and reading material. I was impressed with the time the owners have taken to make it a welcoming and "homey" place. The Tunnells are friendly and accommodating people, and Dick has wealth of knowledge of the history of the area.

The perfect arrangment for people heading to Ocracoke on the Swanquarter ferry, or for birders interested in the many birding loctions nearby. With only three rooms, each with own private bath, this bed and breakfast (do it yourself breakfast in house kitchen) is lovely. You can bike or walk to and around town and Mattamuskeet Wildlife Refuge is a short drive. We will return for fall or winter birding. Historic Bath is also nearby.

This location was perfect as my wife is a birder and we had planned to visit Lake Mattamuskeet, Pocosin Lakes NWR and Alligator River NWR. It was centrally located to these birding hot spots plus it also would allow us to be close to the Ferry when we continued on with our trip to Ocracoke and Hatteras areas. The owners live right across the street and we were actually staying in their original home. The room was very comfortable and it was so quiet and dark that we had no trouble falling into a deep sleep after a long day of walking and birding. The home was beautifully decorated, neat and clean. Full kitchen allowed us to plan our own meals.

I have stayed at the Tunnell Farmhouse twice this year. It is a very convenient stopping point in traveling from central NC to Ocracoke, allowing me to catch the 9:00 AM ferry without having to get up too early. It has everything one needs in an overnight stay. Good TV, fitness room, great magazines and books, cleanliness, private bathrooms, and comfortable beds. Dick and Sandra Tunnell, the owners who live across the road, welcomed me to their 300-plus acre farm, shared interesting history, and gave good directions to a really good restaurant. The house is two minutes from the Swan Quarter ferry to Ocracoke (Pat's gas station is one minute away), which was perfect for me. I plan to return within a month.

  • Liked — convenient to Swan Quarter ferry, good price
  • Disliked — mosquitoes waiting for me to step outside

We left our precious Montauk hamlet for a long week to visit our kids in North Carolina over Memorial Weekend and to film a couple of my American Dreams® TV Shows down south on location. Swan Quarter, right on the bay, is one of the most beautiful, charming, historic, and unpretentious little towns on the Inner Banks; actually a fishing village. People are friendly and they seem to have more time, sit on their front porches in the evenings and talk to neighbors and people walking by. The NC Swan Quarter - Ocracoke Island ferry commutes to the Outer Banks island year-round and one can take the ferry for a dollar and spend the day. The Hyde County Courthouse in Swan Quarter is being rebuilt, as the historic courthouse was badly damaged as a result of a flood a few years ago, a dike that protects the village from possible storms and floods is under construction. We stayed at the lovely Tunnel Farm House B & B in Swan Quarter for a few nights and not just only for the filming of my TV shows. We rode our bikes all over town, attended the annual fish fry at the fire house on Memorial Weekend Saturday and one on Memorial Day at the Tunnel Farm with Sandra and Dick Tunnel and their neighbors and friends. I love fried fish, hush puppies and corn! The next weekend we took the ferry to Ocracoke Island for three dollars per person with a bike to attend the art and storyteller festival. At Pat’s ‘no name’ gas station, the only one in town, is a large sign that tells all who are passing by what the news are in town that day, if there are any. “Welcome American Dream TV” was written with red paint on the simple white sign, and I just loved it. - IL
