“Pleasant Inn, Lovely Locale”
Reviewed 11 October 2012

We spent three nights here in this lovely inn in a small town on the river. The rooms were decorated tastefully and were spotless. There are just five rooms and a pub/deli. (The California BLT is great!) There are several gift shops in the town and the view of the river is very picturesque. The general location is convenient to Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville and many beaches, such as Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach. It is easy to run to the beach for a few hours, then back to the inn. It isn't cheap, but it is reasonable for the room, adjacent deli and the location.

My husband and I spent our 33rd anniversary in this charming inn. Our room featured a very comfortable, cushy bed; jacuzzi; separate rain shower; mini-fridge; and microwave. From our room we could see the beautiful, sparkling waters of the White Oak River as it makes its way to the ocean. Right downstairs is the Church Street Irish Pub and Deli, so you won't go hungry. Saturday night there was live entertainment in the pub. Our room was well insulated: we could not hear the music unless we went outside on the porch. Not to be missed are all the quaint shops within steps of the inn.

Room Tip: Room #1 is the only one with a jacuzzi.

We were in the process of a move when my husband came home from his deployment, and we needed a place to stay the first night he came home. We didn't just want a chain hotel for the event. We wanted something special and intimate with a little bit of luxury. Anyone who has frequented the Church Street Pub & Deli knows it to have excellent details and atmosphere (and food of course!). When I discovered that the owners of this Pub & Deli were also opening an Inn whose availabilities corresponded with my husband's homecoming, I jumped at the chance. We were not disappointed. The door opened to a tranquil, cozy retreat with a king-sized bed, beautifully selected furnishings, a flat screen TV, and a lovely bathroom with a stone-tiled shower. From the bench outside our room we had an awesome view of the river. Inside the room was a list of food from the Deli we could order all day, and even though it is a small establishment (I only spied 5 rooms available), there was someone we could call at all hours. It was a peaceful stay, and as it was right in the middle of historic downtown Swansboro, the next morning we were able to walk right downstairs and wander the quaint shops and restaurants there.

The only cons I found for this place was that there was limited elevator access. This was not really a problem as it is only one flight of stairs up, but with heavy bags, it was a bit of a hassle. The price was also more expensive than many of the other hotels in the area. Considering, however, that this is one of the only hotels in the area with character and charm, it is well worth it. They do offer military discounts.
