the bedding is ancient and there is paint chipping off the walls all thru the room .We found a very large crushed bug above our shower head which tells you how much attention the housekeeping staff pays. Also you can call and make a reservation but don't ask for a confirmation number because they don't know what they are.The rates are competitive with much nicer hotels so my advice is to stay at one of those other hotels. This place is an unkept dump!

Room Tip: Don't stay on the first floor because it is a dungeon.

My husband and I went down after Mother's Day, 2013, stayed a couple of days in an ocean front room on the second floor. We have been several times to Topsail Island with family and always rent a house and do the "pier fishing" thing, but this time was just a little get away to see if we could catch some fish.
Staff at the pier are very helpful and check in was quick. We didn't have reservations and didn't have any problems. Room was adequate for our needs, no frills, but was a basic 2 double beds, with fridge and microwave. Everything was clean, couldn't get the showerhead to work properly, that was okay, a relaxing bath did the trick! We loved the view, and I got some great pictures of those beautiful sunrises at Topsail. Weather was coolish, fish weren't biting too good, but it was still a beautiful stay! I'll always come back to Topsail, and the Jolly Roger Pier for fishing!

Room Tip: It's worth the extra $10 for the ocean front room, just to get to see those beautiful sunrises!

The Jolly Roger is mainly a little fishing motel. The price was right so my friend and I stayed there for a weekend recently. It is right on the ocean and we did have a great view! Not a super clean and updated place but what do you really want for the price??!!! There are about 3 little eateries within walking distance and also a little icecream shop.

Topsail is a beautiful quiet beach! Not crowded at all!

Not sure what all the bad reviews are about. We went in not expecting much because of what we read here, and we wound up thoroughly enjoying our stay here.

The check in was easy, and friendly. The office is not located at the motel though, but 2 buildings down(there's the motel, a set of efficiency apts and then the office/pier). We were lucky enough to get a room on the 3rd floor, away from the pier and were extremely happy.

The room was clean(I brought bed bug rid and disinfectant wipes in case and didn't need to use them) and neat. We had two double beds, a mini fridge, a microwave, a dresser, nightstand, plenty of lighting and 2 chairs by the window, with still plenty of room to move about. Outside was our balcony, and a beautiful view of the ocean. We only heard our neighbors when they were sitting outside and the A/C wasn't running; which wasn't too often since we like to keep the room cool. At night we kept the balcony door open and fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. All we had to do was walk down one flight of stairs and we had direct, private beach access. Not much more you could ask for. The price is right for the view and location.

Needless to say, we will be back for another weekend getaway !

My basic review:

Likes: Bed was comfortable, It had everything you HAVE to have, you really can't beat the location. Also, I have a feeling if you buy a better room, you really would like it.

Dislikes: We had a HARD time closing and locking the door, the bathroom door won't close, when it rains, the door leaks, there is no window, other than the window in the door, and there was still some sand in the bed.

Our experience:

My fiance and I went to Topsail Beach for a small getaway vacation. Money was tight, so we booked 1 night at the Jolly Roger. We got room 107, which was the one of the two cheapest rooms with one king-sized bed. It's not actually attached to the regular rooms. It, and room 211, are in a building all alone. IF you are just booking a room to sleep in, it's fine, and that's what we were planning, but our vacation got moved due to a sudden family event, and our trip was pretty much ruined. It rained all the first day and all night. We got there pretty early and I will say this, Topsail beach on a cold rainy day...NO FUN. We went to food lion and everyone was buying beer, so it wasn't just us being new in the area. The next day, the weather was better, still a little chilly though, but honestly there's not much to do in Topsail Beach itself. We went to Pine knoll Shores for our entertainment.

Room Tip: Go ahead and buy a more expensive room.

While the pictures on the internet make the rooms look slightly bigger than they are, the king suite still had plenty of room for the 4 of us. Pricing is somewaht sketchy. Even the king suites are based on 2 people, so you have to pay an additional $8 per person per day. Why they would base the king suite on 2 people, I have no idea. It's a old building, but is kept up quite well. Being right on the beach is a definite selling point and it is in a convenient location. It is nice to walk the beach from the pier to the end of the island and back. It's very quiet and peaceful here. The snack bar is nice and they sell pretty much anything in the store that you could possibly need for fishing. One thing they do not make clear is that even paying guests need to pay to fish. It's only $13 a day, but I think it should be free for guests. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. We had a very nice stay and will likely stay there again

Room Tip: The king suite had a very comfortable king size bed. The full size bed was rather hard and the slee...

old but clean. very minimalist. very friendly staff. i like to fish so having the pier right there is what i came for. its quiet with lots of beach to walk. nice enough little restaurant on premises where we had breakfast every morning. i am going back again this year. the ritz it aint. lol. i just go to a hotel to sleep not for pools or fancyfurnishings. its relatively cheap for an ocean front place.
