“Needs Work!”
Reviewed 17 December 2011

Door lock loose, could not tighten; faulty electrical switch in bedroom (no lights); major hot water problem---enough for one short shower, but had to heat water on stove to take a warm bath; please, folks---fix your property up and make it shine before you try to charge 1st class prices for your resort!

No Wi-Fi, a big minus. DVD player would not work, either. Washing machine left clothes very, very wet and dryer took 2 full cycles to get them dry. No ice maker so had to buy cubes. Large eye on electric stove had to be "pushed in" constantly to keep contact. Matresses old and frames did more than just "squeak.!"

On the plus side, view and high ceilings very nice.

Beer quality on champagne budget---sorry, Willow Valley Resort!

Room Tip: 2nd floor only for any kind of view!

My children and i decided to try this resort because of the cabins. We were pleasantly suprised when we opened the cabin door. The inside was very roomy and clean. The cabin was very tastfully decorated and the kitchen was very user friendly with all the books for the appliances handy. The grounds were well kept and the pool even though it was across the street by the main office was very well kept. We really enjoyed that the only way you could get into the pool was with the code that was given to you at check-in. The pool did not have an overpowering chlorine smell and had a patio outside with tables and lounges. It was never over-crowded and even though their were no lifeguards the people that enjoyed the pool all seemed to follow the rules never had to go to the office and complain. You were close enough to the stores and restaurants if you decided to go shopping or just go out and forget about cooking. The employees were very helpful and polite, really can not wait to go back maybe try one of the bigger cabins and bring along some friends to enjoy this resort also.

After staying at Willow Valley Resort during the fall over the past 12yrs I am sorry to say I am very disappointed. Normally we are very pleased with the condo's and cabins, but this past weekend we stayed in condo 116E and it was awful. Upon entering the condo, it had a musty smell to it like it had been shut up for a while and not used. The furniture was old, worn out and full of dust because when you sat on them, dust flew up in the air. The towels, washclothes and sheets smelled of moth balls and the comforters and pillows are in desperate need of replacing. The shower head in the front bathroom was clogged and my husband had to clean it out so there would be a decent water pressure. Also the cable tv in the master bedroom was not working and again my husband had to repair the cable so it would work. There were no blinds at the windows only curtains that were not large enough to cover the window openings. The carpet throughout the condo was worn and dirty. Overall this condo is in need of a major overhaul.

Just returned from a Boone/Banner Elk ski week based in a charming, rustic cabin at the Willow Valley Resort. The cabin, surrounded by mountain laurel and fir trees was nestled on the mountain overlooking the snow covered golf course, resort office and indoor pool/hot tub building. We enjoyed the mountain views from the cabin, the real stone fireplace and swimming in the pool that remained quite warm despite outside temperatures in the teens and below zero wind chills.

Since it snowed every night, We were concerning about driving on the road up to the cabin but, thanks to the friendly resort staff, the road was plowed at least twice a day and they even had the path to the front deck of the cabin shoveled each time it was needed.

The resort is about 10 miles from Sugar Mountain and not much further from Beech Mountain both of which offer skiing that compares well with the best slopes in New England and Colorado. That is especially true of Sugar Mountain which boasts of a 1200 foot vertical, loads of snow making gear and a longest run of 1.5 miles. Even closer is the small village of Valle Crusis (not sure of spelling) located on the banks of the scenic Watagua River - which looks like something out of a fly fisherman's travel video. This small village is home to the historic original Mast General Store (well worth a visit) and the highly rated Mast Farm Inn Bed & Breakfast.

If your looking for a Ritz Carlton experience, look elsewhere. But as a base for a North Carolina mountain experience the cozy cabins at the Willow Valley Resort are just fine.

P.S. The negative reviews on this resort seem focused on the condos not the cabins. While we didn't stay in one of the condo buildings, they appeared plain on the outside compared to the cabins and, unlike the cabins, were located near the road leading to the resort and not on the resort's pretty mountain.

We went there for the color change of the year and it was great. The unit had everything we would need and the view was better then we could hope for. Valley is not the Ritz like some would hope but it is in the hills of NC. so it was all that you need and close to all the attractions in the area. The course is fun for all that play and those that don!t,and the indoor pool and hot tube were fun at night when it was 39 outside. The staff was very friendy and helpfull with tickets and they have the web that everone can use.

We stayed at Willow Creek for the first time about 10 years ago and it was a nice, comfortable place. However, our last 3 stays (All within the last 2 years) have been a dissapointment. The decline of the place is evident. Evident and more noticeable each time.

In this last stay, there was no soap of any kind in either one of the bathrooms and there was a very strong odor caused by moisture on the walls and floors. We found a dehumifidier turned on at full speed in one of the bedroom closets but even with that, the odor was quite strong. I wanted to return to the office and request a different unit but we checked in after 9:00 pm and there was nobody at the office. With an Appalachian State footbal game and several festivals in the area, everything was sold out and we had no choice but to stay.

The unit showed other issues as well. The carpet was in bad shape and had more than its fair share of stains and cigarrete burns. With the exception of the refrigerator, which seemed to be relatively new (5 to 10 years old maybe?) , the appliances in the kitchen were old and some showed rust. The vinyl in both bathroom floors also showed excessive signs of wear and tear. So did the shower stalls and bathtub.

It is a shame the place has deteriorated so much. The location is beautiful and the place offers great potential. I hope it receives the care and attention it deserves. Until then, if I'm to pay $140 a night, we will be staying somewhere else.

The pool may be open year round, but it isn't heated. I have never seen appliances so old. We were more comfortable on the floor than the couch and no one could sleep. We ended up going home on Monday (even though we weren't supposed to check put until Friday). I want my week back from RCI
