“Great learning experience”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

Visited while in town. Small but very informative museum. Learn the importance of the estuary to wildlife. Knowledgeable and friendly volunteers. They have boat rides on the river at certain times of the year starting in May or just walk down the waterfront on the waterfront walk. Very relaxing.

“A learning experience”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

The cost was $5 which included a pontoon boat trip on the Pamlico and Tar Rivers. The whole experience was very educational. How the area developed, what kind of wildlife and fisheries are in the area, and some history about the town of Washington, NC. You can spend hours in the Estuarium if you what to read everything, and the boat ride is approx. one and a half hour. The price is good for all day.

“Fun and Interesting Museum”
Reviewed 7 November 2013

As stated in many of the previous reviews, the staff is knowledgable, helpful, and glad to share information about area waterways. The Estuarium has a $5 adult entrance fee, scenic introduction movie, great artwork in lobby (be sure to ask for its story), interesting exhibits, and my favorite, the boat tour. Captain Fred grew up in the area and knows the water very well, his stories are interesting and more. Boat tour is 1.5 hours, free but donations gratefully accepted, reservations suggested. Entire experience is a bargain and great way to spend a few hours.

“The Best Stop in Washington, North Carolina”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

For some unexplained reason, this fantastic centerpiece of the Washington, NC waterfront is not considered an "attraction" of Washington. Snap to it, TripAdvisor! We visited on an overcast October Tuesday and were wowed by the intelligence, care, and love for the regional environment on exhibit here. The Washington, NC waterfront on the Pamlico River is trying hard to establish itself as a tourist destination in coastal North Carolina. They couldn't have a better partner than the Estuarium. It's an educational center, an entertainment center, a learning environment, and a really nice place for kids and adults to learn about the rarity of estuaries in America and the value of this one, the second largest estuary in the United States (#1 is the Chesapeake). The staff volunteers love their jobs, give interesting guidance and highlight unique local art that explains how an estuary works. There's a touching film and a worthwhile self-directed exhibit area plus an outdoor boardwalk that lets you get a little personal time with the broad, beautiful Pamlico River.
