“Exceeded our expectations!”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

It has been a dream of mine to stay here for a couple of years, so decided to make a reservation several months ago for a weekend staying in Gail's room to celebrate hubby's birthday & our anniversary. It truly exceeded our expecations!

The view was incredible and the room & amenities were wonderful - we loved the steam shower, the dry sauna, and the big tub on the porch. We were blessed with less than perfect weather (some rainy, cool days/evenings), so made very good use of the fireplace which was tremendous in July!

The staff was what really makes the Swag unique - Julie, thanks for everything! Sandra, Jake, we so appreciated the extra special care you gave my husband when he was feeling poorly. Ginger - the room, bathroom, outdoor tub/shower - everything was especially clean! Thank you for the special turndown gifts. Everyone we met was so kind & considerate. We were lucky to be there the weekend David Morris was featured & he offered to lead us on a hike to Purchase which turned out to be one of the highlights of our visit.

Don't miss out on ordering some of the special items for a real treat - the cheese plate was lovely as was the beautiful vase of flowers. Of course, we had to visit the gift shop on the premises (ok, I visited more than once!) & found a variety of lovely items to choose from - unique jewelry, clothing items, pottery. Someone helped convince my husband to buy me a bracelet I liked very much -:) (Thanks, Julie!) & I've been wearing it almost daily since we've come home.

Food was very nice, plentiful, & lots of options to choose from; the baked goods were incredible!

It's not if we'll return, but when.....hopefully very soon! Don't miss this gem!

Room Tip: We loved Gail's room which is a corner room in the main building on the second level & had a...

Our first visit to The Swag was during the summer, and it was wonderful. The rooms are phenomenal (virtually every in-room bath permutation one can imagine), the service impeccable, and the food is exceptional. Also, you can't beat the location--5000 feet up, directly adjacent to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. If you enjoy good food, spectacular views and the great outdoors, don't miss an opportunity to visit The Swag. Two tips: lunch on Wednesday is an outdoor picnic on top of nearby Gooseberry Knob. It's fantastic. Thursday night's dinner is another can't-miss: a barbecue to die for. It's a dry county, so you will need to bring your own alcoholic beverages, but they will serve them for you. We stayed at the Terrace, with a wonderful rhododendron bed, in-room sauna and whirlpool tub--but each room is different, and special in its own way.

Imagine the best and be surprised by even better. Imagine the most delicious food, and enjoy even more delicious. Imagine the most beautiful setting and be inspired by the mountains, the sun rise, the trails, and the lovely flowers. The Swag offers all; no detail is left to chance. Unique and special. A world apart from any other destination. The owners, Deener and Dan envisioned a home and turned the home into a welcoming small inn where guests feel like friends.
There are many special amenities: walking sticks for hiking, trails in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, satellite radio in each room, outdoor showers for many rooms, sauna in some rooms, homemade cookies, talented friendly chef, great service, interesting guests, unique rooms, and so much more.

The Swag experience is unique and incomparable. The location is beautiful. The food is great and the service superb. Plan a trip. You'll love it. We spent a delightful four days hiking and meeting others in the NC mountains. We really enjoyed Deener and Dan and the story tellers.

You will not find a more wonderful and welcoming place to stay. We have now stayed here 3 different times and every time we love it even more! Every detail is perfect thanks to Deener's watchful eye - the decor, everything is spotlessly clean, wonderful amenities including nightly turndown with chocolates. The staff knows when you have gone down to breakfast and by the time you return, your room is completely refreshed! I have never had such a great stay any where else that we have been. Highly recommended!!

Room Tip: Gail's Room is awesome!

We visited The Swag the third week in May--about a week too early to see the Rhododendrons burst into bloom. And because of its high elevation, not all of the trees on the surrounding mountains had leaved out yet. The Swag's owners (Dan & Deener Matthews) and the staff are extremely gracious and go out of their way to oblige their guests. Our TwoStory Cabin ($800 per day) was comfortably appointed in a style I would describe as "pleasingly rustic and cozy." The first floor of The TwoStory consists of a small living room w/ bar area and a tall, stone fireplace in the front, and, in the back, a King bedroom, private bath (shower, no tub), and a small private deck. The second floor loft has a King bedroom, private bath (shower, no tub), a private deck with a very small metal jaquzzi. The beds are super comfy. The living room seats five comfortably-- a sofa, two arm chairs, and a rocking chair. While guests enjoy a communal breakfast, the housekeeper makes the bed, cleans & re-stocks the bathroom, tidies up, and replaces used cups and glasses. In the evening, while guests are dining, the housekeeper turns down the bed. There is a small billiards room in The TwoStory's basement. The Swag provides plenty of umbrellas outside the cabins and in the breezeway by the dining hall--and we used them on several occasions. A four-page daily summary of the New York Times (one per couple) is delivered to the cabin every morning. The Swag has a nice gift shop located above the dining area. In a separate building, there is a well-stocked, two-story library. The only TV I saw at The Swag was located on the top floor of the library. A heads-up about the hiking-and-nature trails: guests who are in good physical condition will find them more enjoyable than those whose stamina isn't what it used to be! The weather was fairly cooperative during our four-day stay. Light showers came and went without much ado; evenings were cool to chilly, but we had lightweight jackets. I was surprised that The Swag does not offer a sit-down lunch, but rather you can choose between a bag lunch or a backpack lunch. For the most part, the guests are 40 and older--those who would appreciate the serenity of the setting and pace. Younger folks and children would be hard pressed for entertainment after the first day ... and let's face it, children get restless and noisy when they're bored. I hope we can return to The Swag someday but, to be sure, we'll have to $ave for it, big time.

Room Tip: The Swag provides plush bathrobes for its guests, as well as blow-dryers, and mounted, lighted, magn...

We visited The Swag as we always do at the beginning of spring. The views and trails are some of the best that you will come across. We always know what to expect as we have been now for the last 5 years. The rooms are always nice and clean. The staff is very gracious and accommodating from check in to check out. But the one issue we have is the turn over in the kitchen. The food was ok but we learned that they have a new chef. This seems to be the way of the Swag. Almost every year or every other year there seems to be a new face behind the window. Maybe this is why we are never Wowed by the cuisine. With the money that one spends while staying the food should not be an after thought.
