We had a dinner cruise with our friends and had a lovely time. The Capt. was so knowledgeable about where we were and gave interesting info on the river. His wife made sure everyone was taken care of with very good food. They had a bar on board and the only change I'd ask for was better choice of wine. Otherwise great cruise and good food with our friends what more could you ask for.

We took the tour with a small group (West Point Society of the Cape Fear Region) and I can tell you it was fabulous. Captain Doug, his wife Diane and Garland were professional and knowledgeable about the Cape Fear River, its history and the wildlife we would encounter during the cruise. We saw osprey and learned about their nesting habits; the spot where the river switches from salt to fresh water, and so many more interesting facts.

Our group contracted for lunch and the various wraps, salads and fresh fruit were excellent -- CHOPs deli provided them and I would recommend a visit to either of their locations in downtown Wilmington and at Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina.

We were not disappointed as we cruised the river with our cold beverages and everyone commented that the cruise was a great way to learn about Wilmington and the Cape Fear while enjoying a fabulous, educational tour along the way.

Bring cameras, binoculars and be thirsty -- you can arrange for groups and even request "Theme Cruises" -- the boat also participates in local events so check them out on Facebook.

Checking in was a breeze! All the people we met were courteous and helpful. We boarded the simple small surrey pm boat at the designated time at dusk. Our captain was informative and gave us the safely instructions. Hot food, buffalo wings in a slightly sweet sauce, as well as chilled cubes of cheese and crackers were set out as the boat pulled away. Our boat had about 15-20 people and the was plenty of room and comfortable chair seating for everyone. There is no topside seating, but the sides are open and the back has an open aires where you can take pictures both coming and going. The Captain gave a very informative description of the history of Wilmington. I was gratified that he explained the historical importance of the Cape Fear River as well as Wilmington's critical role to the South during the civil war.

We learned quite a bit about the growth of the city, as well as the marshes across, that were, surprisingly, once huge Rice Plantations. Our little boat motored up towards Wilmington, way further 150? miles upriver. But we turned and came back, passing skeletons of old trees along the banks across the river. The lovely bartenders named Taylor recommended two Moonshines that we just had to try as the huge, yellow Super-moon rose over Wilmington. The boat held steady as we all gazed in awe at this amazing site over Wilmington on our return trip. We learned of the importance of Wilmington now to NC industry through its success as a filming home for Hollywood films, as well as indie film development. S much to see, and such an amazing town to be part of. The huge golden moon rising as we were motoring quietly back was the crime de la crime of the evening. Heck it was the highlight of our trip!!! Great captain, great first mate and wonderful Bartendress!!! I live here now and would do this again and again! Worth every bit of the $36 fee, fee included!

The Wilmington Backwater Adventure Tour is the best we have taken. Captain Doug and Garland were very friendly and very knowledgeable about Wilmington and the Cape Fear River and answered all our questions. Learning about the Osprey colony was wonderful. We will definitely recommend this to our friends who are planning on a trip to Wilmington. Thank you for a great experience!

Carol and I took a two-hour ecological tour of the Cape Fear River on Wednesday (5/7). We had a great time with Captain Doug and Garland as we cruised up the Northeast Cape Fear River.

We learned so much and enjoyed favorable cold drinks. Take your camera and binoculars to see lots of birds and stuff.

Mary, at check-in, will take care of you and your family.
