I was struggling to find an available hotel and was lucky enough to find this one. The service at the front desk was incredible, they were so nice and welcoming. The room was large and spotless and the bathroom was great. I highly recommend the Hawthorne.

We were not quite sure about staying at Hawthorne Inn but we are pleased to report it was an excellent stay. As a seasoned biz traveler in higher-end hotel chains we did not expect the experience to be 'top notch'. The rooms have been renovated as well as a large majority of the premises. Yes, it's a bit odd that you park and bring luggage (via elevator) from the back of the building but it was no big deal. Every inch of the place was absolutely clean- and I'm not easy to please. WIFI worked well. Bed room furniture recently upgraded, new bed and bathroom sink nicely upgraded with granite counter.
The individual that checked us in went about in beyond while handling multiple demands. We had dinner at the hotel bistro (they also have a bar) and it was reasonable although one can walk just 4 blocks to restaurant row. Our server was genuinely service oriented and very friendly. Our stay was related to treatment at the hospital and the fact they run a shuttle 24 hrs/day was an unexpected plus but one can drive 2 miles and be at the hospital within 5 minutes. We'll be back mid-August and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.

Room Tip: You might want to ask about any remaining renovations (looks like they're near completion) and r...

The room was clean, quiet, and spacious. The beds were very, very comfortable. The staff was helpful, and the breakfast buffet was very good. Wifi was fast and worked well. Will absolutely return if visiting Winston-Salem again!

We stayed here because it was the convention hotel we were attending. First of all, the property is immaculate, the staff is friendly and accommodating, the food is good for hotel food. Breakfast buffet every morning is included in room price, regularly replenished and plenty of variety. The rooms are spacious, and have everything needed for a comfortable stay.
This hotel is owned by Baptist Hospital, and is used to accommodate outpatients, patients; families, etc., as well as the general public.

The location of the hotel is downtown, and in a nice area. There are a few restaurants within walking distance, and downtown Winston-Salem has many great places to eat.

Two things about this hotel really bothered me. The property is not on level ground, so the front entrance and back entrances are on two different levels. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is. You enter the front to register. There are only handicapped spaces in the front of the hotel. Once you enter, YOU DO NOT BRING YOU LUGGAGE WITH YOU! Signs are posted not to bring your luggage into the lobby. Once you register, you get back in your car, and drive to the SIDE of the building, where there is very little parking, and try to get into the one or two spots designated for unloading. Then you try to back out of there, and drive your car to the lower lots to park. These lots require a climb up a considerable number of stairs. From the back of the hotel, you take the elevators to the rooms, of which there are 6 floors. To go from the elevator to the lobby, or meeting rooms, you must go up about 6 steps. For people in wheelchairs, they have one of those lifts at that point. There is a pool, but many steps down, and no chair lift for wheelchairs, and no special chair to help handicapped into the pool.

I've been told Baptist Hospital bought this property three years ago. What were they thinking??? Many seniors, handicapped, and outpatients stay here, and the configuration of the hotel is just bizarre for anyone, but most especially for those folks. For us, having to move the car three times between registration, luggage removal, and parking was a major annoyance. Suppose we were only one person instead of two? Leave luggage then park car? Go up to room, leaving car in loading/unloading zone? Just crazy!
The other issue was the dog. The website says it is pet-friendly. But what it does not say is you have to tell them ahead of time you are bringing a dog, and they have only some rooms set aside for pets. Since we travel frequently with our small dog, I am very aware of this, and when a site says pets allowed only in some rooms, I make sure I let them know. This was not the case, so when we showed up with the dog...it was a problem as I hadn't indicated it when we made reservation. Eventually they cleared it up, and I guess put us on a lower floor than previously slated for, but if the rooms for pets are limited, the hotel's website should explain this.
There is no designated dog-walking area, and good luck trying to find somewhere, other than asphalt, to walk the dog.

In summary, nice hotel, lovely staff, but its configuration is not appropriate for handicapped or elderly guests.

Room Tip: First floor is reserved for hospital "Sleep Center". So I suggest floor 2.

The hotel seems dated and the layout is strange -- after initial check-in, you will likely use the back entrance, which is also the entrance to the Wake Forest sleep center. Pepsi products available in machines, but there is an excellent coffee shop (Twin City Hive) within walking distance. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable, and the free wifi is reliable. Not bad for a value hotel.
