“Not 5-star, simply OK”
Reviewed 16 February 2009

I normally write good reviews because I follow the advice of tripadvisor members and have been seldom lead astray. This time, I have a mixed review. This may be partially do to the fact that I recently read a book talking about taking ownership and having exceptional service. I am now noticing how service is not often given.

For starters it is a lovely home and the room was spacious with a large Jacuzzi tub. They do have the nice Apple TV with movies for free etc. We stayed in room 219.

The disappointment are as follows:

1) We are used to a traditional B&B where the breakfast is hot and something to look forward to. For example, we recently stayed at the Legacy Inn in Williamsburg and it was wonderful. Here, the breakfast is in a mini-fridge to be heated in the microwave. In addition, they offer French toast for an additional $5.95 per person (mind you we paid $199.00 for the night). Problem here is that we needed to leave by 8:45 AM. The innkeeper/owner, said the hot breakfast was only offered from 9:30-10:30. When we expressed our disappointment, he said, sorry – “I can only work 12 hours a day”. Please note that in the inn information located in the room, it stated the hot breakfast could be served from 8:30-10:30.
2) The room: the bed was nice and TV nice, but the thermostat was broken (with a sticky note on it) so instead, there were 3 space heaters throughout the room. This is February – so cold. There is a fireplace but a charge of $12.00 for it’s use. Seems to me, a 5-star B&B would a) fix the thermostat or b) throw in the fireplace for free.
3) Jacuzzi – was nice size but missing the shower head so a pipe stuck out near the faucet – odd we thought.
4) This is minor - but we couldn't find any shampoo - not sure if we just didn't look in the right place.

Overall – the innkeepers attitude over the breakfast is reason enough for us to stay elsewhere. This is not a B&B – it is an Inn. We stayed there about 3 years ago when it was under a different name and in our opinion – it was better 3 years ago.

  • Disliked — innkeeper attitude

We have stayed at a number of B and Bs, hostels and hotels and this is one of the best for atmosphere. It is very private. As mentioned, it is not for socializing, as breakfast is left in your fridge, unless you order french toast. The quiche was delicious though and the fruit and yogurt were good too. We didn't get a ham biscuit as stated, but it was unneeded.

What made this place was the room. The fire was worth the extra charge and the jacuzzi was huge. We could both sit next to each other. We enjoyed the B and B so much that we stayed 2 nights instead of one. We LOVED the Apple TV music and even watched a movie. Everything was just very romantic and we felt left alone in a good way. Can't wait to return!

  • Liked — The jacuzzi and fireplace- room 221!
  • Disliked — Missed ham biscuit :(....very minor complaint!

I must be very careful with this review to do no injustice to this place. There are b&b’s where you mix with the innkeeper and other guests. I prefer such b&b’s and this one is another kind of b&b which does not make it a bad place, it’s just different.
You don’t mix with other guests and the innkeeper leaves the place in the evening. So it’s more like a small hotel to me. You have pre-prepared breakfast in your room from your fridge (you heat it up in your microwave) which was o.k. but of course not like breakfast experiences you have from time to time at other b&b’s.
You have wireless internet and Apple TV which lots of media choices (which we did not use so I can write nothing about it). We got an upgrade on our room which was very nice as it had a Jacuzzi. The room itself is a bit dark and we had basically no view. You cannot open the windows and the ac is not the latest and a bit noisy. Still we slept very well and heard nothing of other guests, maybe because this is a historic house with very thick walls. There is no off-street parking but sufficient space directly in front of the houses. The location is very close to downtown, maybe 0.5 to 1 mile. The interaction with the innkeeper was very nice because he was very helpful and willing to give you any assistance you need (e.g. places for dinner, attractions).
My wife went totally crazy about the interior of the room. You really lodge in a historic house and it is decorated so nicely. You room is cozy and clean and consists of Victorian antiques which makes this a great experience. If you ask me, this is primarily a b&b where business people might want to stay. Nevertheless also an excellent choice for tourists that prefer privacy.

Please note: This is a review of our trip to the USA from 18.5.2008 until 9.6.2008.
This was accommodation # 4 of that trip
If you want to follow the trip, the hotel/bed&breakfast before this was Braeside Inn, Sevierville (TN), the hotel/bed&breakfast after this was Holladay House Bed and Breakfast, Orange (VA)

We loved our stay in this historic, gracious B&B. Our room had a spacious bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. Candles & bath bubbles thoughtfully provided. Sound system has speakers throughout the suite. The beautifully furnished dining area leads to a private deck. The sitting area & bedroom area are luxurious. The flat screened TV is Apple TV, lots of CD's & movies.
Breakfast was in our mini-fridge & was very good. The owners were welcoming, gave us a recommendation for a wonderful restaurant just around the corner . Parking was on the street in front of the house. The web site has many photos, I love it when the room matches the photos!

Be careful when you book with Summit Street. When I booked the gentleman told me there was a one week cancellation. He did not mention any non-refundable deposit. When I cancelled with well over one week notice (seven weeks) the inn charged my credit card a $25 charge per night ($75 as I had booked 3 nights). I contacted the inn and the innkeeper insisted he informed me of the non-refundable deposit per night. He had not. There is also no mention of this non-refundable deposit on their website. I would not stay at this inn due to this experience-beware of giving them your credit card number until you understand their policies completely!
