RJ Reynolds Auditorium
Reviewed 15 February 2017

We sat in the extreme left mezzanine seats for the Rhiannon Giddens New Years Eve concert and purchased tickets in the extreme right mezzanine section for the Michael Jackson concert. The sound was horrible! Obviously, the sound crew for the symphony did not do a pre-concert sound check throughout the building. When the WS Symphony president welcomed the audience to the concert, we knew something was wrong. The sound was muffled and unintelligible. When the music started, it was o.k. but whenever anyone spoke to the audience, it was unintelligible. The sad thing is there was approximately 10 other guests sitting around us who had NEVER been to Reynolds Auditorium, and they were vocally disappointed and said they will spend money on a ticket for WS Symphony concert at this venue. Several other patrons sitting around us located vacant seats elsewhere in the auditorium and relocated during intermission. It was a very disappointing experience.

RJ Reynolds' Auditorium is technically part of both a high school and the city of Winston-Salem. It is an architecturally beautiful and a historically significant building. But it is definitely modern in its ability to allow the best of the best use its stage. Rumor has it that the ghost of Mrs. Reynolds haunts the building, so one will often find an offering of flowers lying beneath her portrait in the lobby. Concerts, theatrical productions, orchestra and choral performances, PTSA meetings, and more can be well enjoyed here.

Reynolds auditorium is elegant, convenient and comfortable. The wide range of events held there, from symphony to bluegrass, attest to its acoustic quality. It is wonderful,to study the architecture while listening to a favorite performance.

We attended a pops concert with the Winston-Salem Orchestra and the Terry Mike Jeffreys Band on 2/13. The venue is a lovely place that seats about 1600 but it us part of a high school complex so there is no parking to speak of. The room was nearly full, acoustics were beautiful, but trying to get an 88 year old into the building which does not have an elevator to get upstairs was nearly impossible. What a shame.
