“Nice property, Friendly but poor service, LOUD HVAC, Billing issues”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

The property is nice and well kept. There is plenty of space in the rooms. And every room has a view of water.

From those good beginnings, the rest goes downhill. First, I called because plans changed and I needed to extend my reservation. The person who answered the phone was unwilling to answer a single question directly about cost or availability. After 15 min, I decided to book elsewhere. It just wasn't worth it. According to two other colleagues who were also staying here, they called to ask about bringing spouses and staying an extra day. Their experience was identical. Second, the scheduled shuttle to the airport (I'm not sure if this is routine or a service coordinated by the meeting I attended) was not there until 30 minutes later. My friend was in serious danger of missing his flight. Third, the HVAC unit closely resembled a tent adjoining O'Hare airport -- loud and intermittent. Everyone complained of the same issue; so, I know it wasn't just my room. Finally, and most seriously, everyone needs to check their bill CLOSELY before departing .The waitresses added to tips. There were extra charges on my bill and those of at least 4-5 others. Poor service coupled with dishonesty is completely unacceptable.

Room Tip: As best I can tell, all rooms were very similar. Higher floors might provide more quiet compared to...

AS residents of Chapel Hill, we were anxious to explore some of the NC coastline. After many reviews of properties, this property is the only one directly on the beach. The beach is lovely - perfect really and only a 1 minute stroll from the hotel pool. We had a lovely stay enjoying the surf and sea and the hotel's terrific location. We will be back. The only reason I won't give it 5 stars is that they charge considerably extra for use of their beach chair. Beach chairs and umbrellas should be included for guests at a beach resort...

My husband, five-year-old son, and I spent two nights at this hotel recently. This is the old standard hotel in Wrightsville Beach which has recently underwent what looks like was a very expensive renovation, in an apparently Asian theme. However, the superficiality of the renovations leave the remaining original fixtures and structures looking sadder for comparison. Lipstick on a pig, shall we say. The old creaky elevators still have old-fashioned large buttons which do not light up when pressed, leaving the weary traveler to press them hard and repetitively. The entrance to the elevators is on a slightly lower plane than floor level, so you always feel as though your are going downhill as you step on. The elevator lobby on each floor (other than the main lobby level) is so low that my husband (who is 6 ft. tall) could easily touch it while standing flatfooted. The ceiling was much higher in the room, thank goodness, but the room itself was such a white, generic blankness that it felt almost like a hospital room. There was only one piece of wall art in the entire white wallpapered room, a large hideous modern splash of color along a side wall. This painting felt very out of place given the barrenness of the large long walls, almost as if the other wall-hangings had been stolen. The bed linens were second-rate and lacked a comforter. The bathroom was tiny. The renovations must have included the tubs being replaced with shower units only. There was not even room for towel racks, so there was literally no where to put used towels or washcloths. A small hook was used for the hand towel. The plumbing fixtures appeared poorly maintained and in our room the faucet was loose and wobbly. A free standing dorm-type fridge stood under a small table in the entry way. The large windows opened onto a metal grill which appeared to be a mock balcony, although there was no balcony at all. The walls were thin and the banging headboard from the room next door woke me from a deep sleep at 2:00 am.

What were the positives? The room was quite large, particularly by modern standards and two queen beds did not feel cramped at all; the complementary breakfast buffet served in the hotel restaurant was the best I have seen anywhere with multiple hot and cold options and beverages served by wait staff. Complementary beach-side chaises were also a nice touch. The poolside bar is lovely, but drinks are very overpriced.

Outside the elevators in the main lobby hangs a large, lovely old Tiffany-style blossom light-fixture, perhaps a hold-over from pre-renovations; however, it clearly has not been cleaned properly in many years with the buildup of debris clearly visible in the bottom of each fixture. To me, this is a perfect symbol of this hotel. There are several less expensive, better maintained options in Wrightsville.

Room Tip: As for a room in the newer building with a real balcony.

Loved this place! Got a same-day reservation in early October and had a beautiful sound-facing room! There was a free 30-minute cruise around the bay we signed up for and afterward a free happy hour. Best Thursday ever and best day of our 5-day trip to North Carolina! The room was clean, beautiful, uncluttered, contained a nice fridge, coffeemaker, etc. Loved it! Will be back!

Room Tip: Soundside, high-level provides a great sunset view!

The Blockade Runner is located in our adopted hometown, so we wouldn't have stayed overnight if something special weren't available. Which there was, on a recent New Year's Eve weekend: A one night, dinner/dancing/party package that was reasonably priced. We knew the hotel from previous lunch, dinner, and pool visits, so we were aware of the terrific beachfront setting, the satisfying menu choices, and the dependably good service. Our room was a nice surprise: Balcony with stunning view of the ocean, and although not a suite, a sofa that divided the space into a plausible sitting/entertaining area in front of the sleeping area--and with the ocean view before us and our friends. We enjoyed the stay so much that we decided to spend a second night. The hotel is situated across the street from the Intracoastal Waterway (some rooms view this side, and are probably quite nice), and there are many places along it to sit and watch passing boats and, since you'll be facing west, the sun setting over the water. There are no sidewalks to easily stroll the Waterway, but the hotel has its own grassy, secluded area with a number of chairs, immediately across from the parking lot. And mention should be made of the grassy, landscaped expanse on the ocean side of the hotel. It includes a putting green, and its greenery is unique to Wrightsville Beach hotel properties. Our only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is a lapse in service. The morning of Jan. 1 we arrived at the dining room for our complimentary breakfast at very near to their closing time, and were told they were closing up--we were not offered coffee, danish, whatever we might take with us that didn't require table service. We asked for such, and were rather impolitely told "No." We registered a complaint with the concierge, but never heard back. However, we did stay a second night, found the service to be again as good as we'd had previously, and wound up deciding that the morning after New Year's Eve may not be the best time to try a hotel's staff's patience. Overall, Wrightsville Beach offers one, maybe two, better hotels, but Blockade Runner is more than adequate.

This is a quaint little hotel on Wrightsville Beach with a view of the sound on one side and the ocean on the other. We had a room with a view of the sound, it was nice to watch people out doing stand up paddle boarding, boating, dolphins jumping, etc. There was not a balcony but we had a sliding door we could open up. There were no comforters on the beds which I thought was odd and had to order a blanket but room service brought it to me right away.
Breakfast was fantastic! Make sure you get there early, though because a line forms quickly to get into the dining room. Ate dinner one night at the restaurant and the food was great. Ordered room service also and that was great so we were pleased with the food/drinks.
The pool area is beautiful and there are neat little chairs to sit in and relax.
The lobby was decorated nicely but the rooms are a little sparsely decorated/plain. The only complaint about my stay would be the very loud neighbors in the room next door, they literally stayed up until 5am partying.
Make sure if you are military to ask for the discount, it is very helpful!

This hotel is very nice and the service is excellent. The rooms are well kept, but a bit on the small side. The hotel offers balconies, but you need to check carefully to assure you will actually get a balcony. We had a sliding glass door, but no balcony. The restaurant is nice and has a good breakfast buffet, although the food was just warm and never hot.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a balcony room.
