“Good Service = Longevity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

My daughter recommended this hotel which is celebrating its 50 years in business for our girl's club reunion. We were so pleasantly surprised by the decor, the cleanliness, the entertainment at the pool, the facilities, the buffet breakfast and most of all the staff. From the young man that welcomes you to the Blockade Runner to the young person who provides you with towels, the emphasis was on respectful and responsible service. For example Morgan one of the young men who welcomes and valet parks your vehicle needs some extra kudos. One evening when we were about to leave the hotel to walk to a restaurant for dinner one of my friends noticed the ominous looking skies. She asked aloud "What will we do if it is raining when we walk back?" Morgan spoke up and said, "just call the hotel and I will pick you up". When we finished our wonderful meal at 22 North the heavens opened up with lightning, thunder and very heavy rainfall. We dialed the hotel and our knight in shining armor, Morgan arrived with the Blockade Runner van to save the five damsels in distress! Bravo Blockade Runner for making customer service part of your employee training!

My family spent 2 nights recently at the Blockade Runner and had a very relaxing time. The rooms a nice, but basic. The common areas have been updated and are very well done. Breakfast was very good and was included in the room rate. No charge for internet. We enjoyed lunch at the pool and had some great fish tacos. All the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: If you don't mind paying the premium, get an ocean view.

From the outside this lovely hotel/restaurant is nothing to gawk about but inside it transforms. There are beautiful, smiling employees all around, tranquil waterfalls and plush seating areas. We wandered around a bit before heading into the restaurant to dine. We could see a fitness center and a gorgeous patch of garden where morning yoga sessions are held. We stood at the hostess station for a few minutes before we were acknowledged. She led us to the outdoor seating (as requested);a garden oasis with the sound of crashing oceans waves in front of us. The pool and pool bar were quite close but you couldn't really tell, noise wise. I ordered the fish tacos and Boyfriend had a Giant burger with aged cheddar and all the fixings. Food was delicious (fish was so fresh, avocados were bright green) and there was lots of it. The wine was crisp and served in the proper glasses for red and white (a huge thing for me!). Our waiter was fun and personable. After lunch we walked down to the private beach area and watched the waves. It was the perfect afternoon adventure.

This is a must for dining in Wrightsville. Don't be deterred by the Valet and blocked off parking lot. There is tons of parking down the adjacent street.

The room and hallway smelled musty, they used a very strong scented cleaner on the hallway floor, which helped when you left the room. We tried to open the sliding glass door for fresh air, but the noise from the bar below was disruptive. The AC unit ran all the time, we had to adjust the temp in the room manually, turning the unit off and on, not ideal. Hotel Personal I spoke with was not helpful, luckily we were only staying two days. Not what you expect from a $300 plus per night hotel room.

Room Tip: Use another hotel!

Considering the fact that there are very few hotels on Wrightsville Beach, this is probably one of the better bets. The PROS: (1) The common areas are nice, (2) the staff is very nice, (3) the complimentary breakfast is pretty good, (4) we really enjoyed the live music by the pool. CONS: (1) The rooms and bathrooms are dated, (2) UPCHARGES!!!

Given the amount that I travel, I am not a fan of upcharges. This place will upcharge you a lot. You want a king size bed instead of two queens, get ready for a $20 upcharge per night. Drinks at the pool, how about a $15 pina colada. Not necessary when you are paying $300 per night for a room.

Stayed four nights on 'sound' side. The room was quiet, very little street noise. Room was spacious, and some updating has occurred since I stayed here three or four years ago. Stay here for the beach (umbrella, chair and towel service). The breakfast was OK but the dinner was good. Staff are friendly and helpful. Valet service very good. Drinks are OK, bar is a little limited. Very busy on Saturday and Sunday, but Monday and Tuesday were very enjoyable. Bring an extension cord if you need many devices charged, the number of outlets per room is a little limiting. Room cleaning was good, considering the amount of sand one can track in. good air conditioning.

Room Tip: Get a two queen bed room on sound side to maximize space.

Our family has been going to the Blockade Runner for many years now. We have stayed in all of the different sides of the hotel. This year over the 4th of July week, it became very apparent that it just isn't being kept up as should be. Especially to the quality they portray their hotel to be. All properties at the beach get wear from the ocean, but this is different.
From day one things just went down hill every day.
From my children showering and standing in their own filth of the sand, salt, pool, sunscreen and sweat up to their knees because the tub wouldn't flush down. Then I was washing up for the night and the sink basically over flowed because it wouldn't flush down. Then there are the floors, we all know they are not carpeted. Not a big deal, but it would be nice if they got washed during our stay, my socks were black after two days, sticky..gross! Guess they have to cut the cleaning short to get all those rooms cleaned in one day? We went to the gift shop to purchase a gift and it was apparent that a leak from the above floor busted through the ceiling, broken all the shelves in the gift shop and broken everything beneath. What a mess! Never got to purchase our gift. We never had the proper amount of towels we needed in our room, after being serviced. How I could not understand. It was obvious there was 4 sets of towels there, just replace with 4 sets?? Guess it was just to confusing?
The kicker to all this was when the family was at the pool day 3 and someone threw up in the pool. The pool boy (towel boy) began to skim the pool with a pool skimmer, twice. That was it!! GROSS and we won't even talk about how anyone, including my family could have gotten terribly sick from not emptying the pool and cleaning the pool. I realize this was the busiest weekend of the year for them, but we're talking the health of their patrons. As sad as we were that hurricane Arthur came and cut our vacation short, somehow we were relieved. I'd say the only thing well miss never going back again, is they have the most amazing fireworks to be seen anywhere ever!! Awesome.

Room Tip: If you are going to choose to stay at the Blockade Runner, then you are going to have to pay for the...
