Excellent beach, at northern end of Wrightsville Beach. Each room is different, decorated by owners, with variable condition but not beat up by any means. Each room has ocean view and sound view, except lowest floors. Premium Rooms are just the higher floors with unobstructed views. The amenities vary by room; we had 2 different ones for our family, one had a tiny refrigerator, with the miniature plastic-doored freezer compartment, while the other had a reasonably large one with a separate freezer. Both had microwaves and cooktop, no oven, but with the kitchenette you can easily do breakfast and lunch without paying restaurant prices. The one room's shower had actually painful needle sprayer, especially after sun all day. Each room has a nice little porch overlooking the beach and ocean.

Rooms ending in 01 have view of both ocean and north to Figure Eight Island. Rooms are reasonably large, very comfortable for 2, but 4 would be a little jammed. We had 2 doubles, but were comfortable hanging out watching TV in one room's sitting area together. Nicely decorated, variable wear depending on unit. It's a little bit of a lottery on which room you get, but if view is important, pay for the Premium Room. But the beach is huge, excellent, and you can move just up a little by the dunes to avoid the crowds and the piped-in music from the pool area, and relax to the sound of the waves. There is a life-guard on the beach but not at the pool.

Nice pool (outdoor, and smaller indoor) with adjacent small jungle gym playground, poolside bar, rentals of beach gear (kudos to the rental guys on the beach, they set up and take down everything for you). Covered parking nice to keep car from baking. Restaurant, but we didn't use it, and a gift/sundry shop. Towels supplied for beach or pool use, with a card system used for return each day.

Staff is very friendly and helpful with questions. There is a general family-oriented vibe

The only down side is the cost. Even with price matching from Expedia's prices (lower than the Shell Island's own website), it is fairly pricey. And the variability of room condition may further diminish the value, depending what room you get. If you're staying for a week, rent a condo (eg Wrightsville Dunes) or a house and get a full kitchen and lots of bathrooms and space for about the same price. If you can't get a week off, this is the nicest place on the island. WAY nicer beach compared to the Holiday Inn to the south.

Restaurant recommendations: Oceanic, Bridge Tender, Dockside (most casual), and King Neptune.

Room Tip: Best views: Premium Room ending in 01

Ask for a room on second floor on the ocean side. The hotel is clean, quiet and in a great location. You can check out all of the Wrightsville Beach area plus it's an easy drive into Wilmington where you'll find great restaurants, historic homes, Battleship North Carolina and much more.

Room Tip: Second floor, ocean side.

Shell Island is the most glamourous place to stay in Wrightsville Beach! We got married at the beach in front of the hotel and couldn't wait to get back. We called and were able to secure a great rate and couldn't wait to get checked in. The hotel let us check in early and we were so happy with our room. We stayed on the top floor (same as last year) and love the fact that there is a seperate bedroom/living room/kitchen area along with two bathrooms! It has the most beautiful patio view of the ocean that we took pictures right from our balconey. The staff is very helpful and parking is secure. Stay here and you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: King bed with closet and dressers, two bathrooms, small kitchen, living room, and beautiful balcony.

First, this hotel is way overpriced for the money. We had 5 people in two rooms, one for 2 nights and one for 3. We could have rented a nice 3 bedroom house on the beach for less than we payed.

As far as the rooms go, they are decently sized with a kitchen and living area and a bedroom. But the rooms aren't very nice. The beds are hard, linens are not soft, and the furniture is very old and outdated. The refrigerator had 2 settings; off and freezing. Anything I put in there froze in hours with the temperature all the way down.

My biggest complaint though was the service and safety of the hotel. The first night we were headed down to the shore to do some fishing. A large gentleman came up to us looking for a fight. He punched me in the chest and kept running his mouth, but not wanting to ruin our vacation we returned inside to report the gentleman. The security called the police go informed me I could go to th courthouse and get a warrant, but without knowin who he was that wouldn't do any good. The next morning, security informed me that they knew who the gentleman was and called the police again. Apparently there was no local magistrate and I would have spent all of saturday in the courthouse getting the warrant, so the police officer recommended that I not pursue this route and just allow the hotel to kick him out. But the hotel never did anything. The manager was completely unhelpful and without even speaking with the gentleman to get his side of the story assumed that he would lie an said that she wouldn't do anything since it was my word against his. I spent the rest of the day and night away from the hotel because I was intimidated by this guy. management could not have been ruder to me. All in all, I would recommend that no one stay here because they do not value customer safety at all, as well as being overpriced.

We booked this hotel blind the day before we left and we were pleasantly surprised to find this beautiful hotel and beach resort town. It wasn't crowded, the beach and the ocean were wonderful, people were friendly, and there were many places to get great food,

Room Tip: we booked online, after talking to other residents, rooms were the same, so go with the cheapest
