“Views, Service, Amenities - But Rooms are Hit or Miss”

We've stayed here many times and really like it, but have found out, you gotta know what room you're getting.

Pros:
Great location, very nice common areas, clean pools and facilities, friendly staff, kitchenettes, great oceanfront views.

Cons:
Rooms can be great or can be kinda spent. Depending on the room you get, they are very different in decor, location and amenities. For example - full frig or mini, great views or okay on main level, noisy (as in right across from the maids closet or tucked quietly in a corner).

Room Tip: Do not recommend rooms at the end of the hotel where the trash comes in and out and the workers go i...

I checked into the hotel with my mother and 2 children for a beach get away in late September. The room itself was a bit small but it was able to accommodate us. There are 2 bathrooms with one containing a shower bath/combo. There is a nice living room area with a tv and then a sink or kitchentte area as they call it. I couldn't image using this for anything but to make a sandwhich or pop some popcorn, it's very small and does not have a stove but does have a microwave and hot plates. Our microwave did not work in our room but we didn't really need it, as we went out for our meals. The view was perfect, the balcony over looks the ocean, it's a bit small but nice with 2 chairs and a small side table. All of the staff we ran into were great and very accommodating. We did have a problem with the hotel restaurant on the first night it was closed when we tried to get dinner there and both our in room menu and the board at the front of the hotel indicating that it should have been open. This was frustrating since we then had to go out at 8:30 in the evening with 2 young children. On the second day we did eat lunch poolside form the hotel and while my food was good, my mother had to send hers back twice as they burnt her hamburger twice. They ended up compensating us with a gift card, needless to say we ended up having breakfast there the next morning to use the card. It was typical buffet style nothing special but fine. The outdoor pool was not heated and a bit cold but the kids braved the temperature and alternated between the indoor and outdoor pool and hot tub and had a blast. We also rented an umbrella and beach chairs from the hotel and it was set up for us on the beach, I thought this was a wonderful service and something I was glad to pay for since I did not have to lug them in the car or back and forth to our room saving me space and wear and tear on my back. We encountered some minor problems but overall a very nice stay. The hotel is starting to show it's age and could use some updates but it is kept clean and the staff was great.

AWESOME, OUTSTANDING.......
Beautiful clean rooms, all ocean facing - breathtaking views on a private beach.
Kudos to Meredith for helping us plan the event - it was outstanding.
Kudos to George our lead host for the evening. Nothing was too much for him.
We all had a great time and the service was 5 star.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fantastic.........

My husband had a convention here, I decided since we got a group rate to bring our kids. I was very satisfied with our room, the service and the friendliness off all the staff. We were there on a sold out weekend, 2 weddings, a convention, and a college swim team- at no time was parking an issue, the pool, hot tub and bar area were very clean. We did not eat there, chose to go out. The beach.....INCREDIBLE!! By far the best kept secret in the Wilmington area. We live close to NC beaches and typically go several times a year to NC beaches, we have found our new favorite spot! Our room was clean, typical "beach" smells, humidity, bugs - but what do these other reviewers expect, your near the marsh (great to walk thru!) and the ocean, I have stayed at far worse. I hope to go back, I must say it is a bit pricey for a nights stay. We didn't have a chance to turn on the tv's, we actually walked the beach until after 10pm - felt very safe, clean, and wow what a view with a full moon!

We stayed there the first week in August, and the beach was fantastic. Umbrella rental is well worth the $20 for the day, as the sun is brutal; even with SPF 50 hats and umbrella, you'll get a dark tan just from the occasional swim or walk down the beach. (The college kids who set up beach sites worked really hard and were super friendly and polite.) The surf there is perfect for body surfing or boogie boarding, there are enough interesting shells to keep beachcombers happy, and a steady breeze makes reading under the umbrella quite comfortable. Turn left at the water and a ten-min. walk takes you to a mostly deserted beach where the wetlands reach the ocean--don't wait until the last day to discover it, like we did.

The room was very nice. It's small but well designed, so we never felt too crowded. The little fridge was big enough for both food and drinks, the little stove and microwave adequate to save us a fortune on breakfast and lunch, and the balcony (barely) big enough for two. But who needs a balcony when you have a whole wall of windows overlooking the beautiful ocean?

Here's why they don't get 5 stars from me: Service is okay, not great. The bartender was nice, but drinks at the tiki bar are crazy expensive, considering that you're going to get a 7-oz. cup mostly full of ice. ($30 spent at Walgreen's for your own soft-sided cooler with a shoulder strap and a cold 6-pack = the first round of drinks at the tiki bar.) Towel service is nice, except when you have to ask the pretty girl to hand you one--and tip her--instead of reaching into the basket yourself. The two pools are lovely, but, as a morning lap swimmer, I was annoyed to find the indoor pool nearly never open on time. One day they were 40 min. late opening! Several complaints had no effect on their efficiency the following morning. Finally, one day our room was not made up until nearly evening, despite two calls downstairs.

Still, we weren't there for the room or the indoor pool, were we?

Room Tip: Get a room on at least the third floor. Otherwise, the big sand dune will keep you from seeing the...

We just finished a week-long stay at Shell Island and miss it already! We come every year and have always enjoyed the opportunity to relax here, for which this property is ideal. The location at the north end of the beach is perfect and this is one of the great walking beaches. We usually come in July or August and were presently surprised to have a week of good weather. As always, the staff were friendly and very helpful. Special thanks to Heidi who promptly resolved an issue involving the hot water in our suite when we checked in. We will be back again next summer.

I could not have asked for a better place to spend my vacation! We pulled up to the resort and knew we'd made the right choice! We'd stopped by a couple of other hotels there on the beach to check prices - 1 we didn't even go in because it was looking rough, the other 1 the prices were quite steep plus we'd had a bad experience with that hotel chain in the past. 3rd stop was at the far north side of the beach...Shell Island Resort!
We walked in and were impressed right away by the attentiveness of the desk clerks. "Hi, welcome to Shell Island Resort!" The guy at the front desk gave us a good deal on our suite, explaining that since it was mid-week and they weren't completely full the rates we'd seen online could be adjusted some. Sweet! (we saved about $50 compared to what the other place was asking for an oceanview room...plus, since the weather is still nice it was like a summer vacation for 1/2 the $$!).
The staff people couldn't have been more helpful, from the bellman to the front desk to the restaurant folks/bartender. We were only going to stay for a night but ended up cancelling our room in Myrtle Beach the next 3 nights because we didn't want to leave. But all good things must come to an end...but I can confidently say that my wife and I with DEFINITELY be back...

Room Tip: Well all of the units are decorated differently... but the guy at the desk actually let us look at 3...
