Owner description: The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

My 4 yr old was disappointed as we walked through the zoo and mostly saw birds and not much else. Maybe we went at the wrong time of the day, but most of the animals were out of sight. It seemed like we did a lot of walking and saw very little. I can see goats and turkeys for free on a friend's farm.

Hubby had meetings so I checked out the zoo. Not large but lots of great animals and the enclosures were wonderful. So much more than I expected and not crowded at all and it was summer. Well worth a trip to check it out.

Well worth the trip. Animals are well kept and the signs very informative. Great for family and friends.

The zoo is a good size especially for Bismarck, ND. The animals have a nice natural grassy habitat and I love the river otter! As with all zoos, the animals seem kind of bored except for the bears who love to eat their watermelon!
