Country Inn & Suites By Carlson, Grand Forks
Ranked #11 of 28 Hotels in Grand Forks
Reviewed 1 June 2012

Pro's:
Nice room with big flat screen TV and clean, well appointed bathroom
Free hot breakfast was above average with fresh waffles and hot eggs every day
Above average swimming area with pool, kids play pool, and two hot tubs.
Close to the mall (only a short drive)
Lobby was inviting with fresh coffee and cookies all day

Cons:
Beds were uncomfortable.
Noise from the hallway came into the room easily
The ceramic tile around the pool is slippery, and the children's water slide is hard fiberglass (this seems dangerous)
There aren't any restaurants, gas stations, etc within immediate walking distance.

Overall I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Family suites are great

Stayed here in May 2012. Quite surprised by this hotel. Extremely clean and a newer property. Huge complimentary breakfast and everyone was really friendly. Front desk staff need some customer service training but other than that the property was a nice stay. The rates for this hotel are quite ridiculous and are higher than major city centres so only stay here if you can get a really good deal.

My wife and I stayed overnight at the Country Inn & Suites recently. Hotel is clean, and quite with nice furnishings and rooms. The complimentary breakfast was nice, with a pretty good selection.

Didn't have much interaction with staff other than check in, but I did overhear one employee say "we hate all Canadians" when speaking to another guest who was from Arizona. Now this may have been all in fun, but I still took some offense to the comment, enough so to make me think twice about staying here again. Be careful what you say in public about Canada people.....if it wasn't for us visiting Grand Forks your economy would be in the toilet!

We stayed at the Country Inn and Suites in Grand Forks in April 2012. We have been staying there since it opened. We find it clean and their beds are excellent. They have suites we rent when we take our grandchildren. There is a king size bed in one room and twin beds in the other. That works for us. We take a regular room when there is just two of us. The continental breakfast is good. There is everything from waffles to fruit to eggs, toast and cereal. Something for everyone. The pool is a fair size and the kids love it. There is a kind of hominess about this hotel. We are only a couple of hours away from Grand Forks so love to go there to get away and do some shopping.

Room Tip: Book far in advance for a weekend stay.

Encouraged as I was by the hotel's existing Trip Advisor rating, as well as by the apparent newness of the place, I booked this hotel for myself and my spouse in a last-minute indulgence. 160$ of room ensured us a room with queen-sized bed, as well as an adjoining sunroom with additional flat screen TV and a hot tub. It sounded great, especially with the service features being so highly lauded in propaganda.

In short, however, these were the problems:

1. Service: Little interest in furthering the experience for us. No one to greet; the big entrance echoed with the sound of our own footsteps and the sound of a handy guy's drill.

2. Food: The room served the customary tea and coffee, the latter of which was ghastly. Nothing was to be found in the bar fridge--even for purchase. As well, can we move beyond plastic cups? Only breakfast was available at this hotel, and don't expect to find food elsewhere in the city unless you like North Amexican or grease bombs.

3. Housekeeping: Evidence of the last folks' stay persisted in our "luxury" suite.

4. Maintenance: The room was unbearably warm, even in the winter night, and the thermostat unresponsive.

5. Amenities: The shower had, as its barrier between it and the rest of the washroom floor, a slight rim like that of a plant tray. Needless to say, the washroom flooded. The sunroom with wall-mounted flatscreen was so small and poorly-arranged that two people had to crane uncomfortably from the stuffed chairs to even see the screen. Although the hot tub made up for some of it, it was regrettably small, with no place to sit, so bums perched painfully on the tub lip for some respite from the heat.

6. Noise level: We came in on a Monday, and found ourselves immediately adjacent to a clutch of rooms full of young ladies. The night was thus filled with the sound of doors opening and slamming.

One thing I'll give the Country Inn is its lack of pretense. However, granted that this hotel isn't attempting exclusiveness, it's uncertain that a big lobby and a cookie bowl compensate for the rest of it.

This is a beautiful hotel! The rooms are spacious and clean. The beds are very comfortable and it's quiet for a good night sleep. The pool area and kiddie pool are large and our kids had lots of fun swimming (3 year old loved the kiddie pool). The breakfast area is large with an overflow area and nice selection. It gets a little busy at times, but you don't have to wait too long. They even let us use this room to order in pizza for lunch for our large group before we had to leave for son's wedding. The ONLY problem was a mix-up with front desk staff and management with a reservation. We made reservations for a number of rooms for a wedding. Somehow an extra room was booked that we didn't use and we were charged for it as a no show. In talking it through with the manager, I thought we came to a conclusion, but after a month, he has not gotten back to me. I am disappointed in his lack of communication. Other than that, it was a lovely stay. We would stay here again; however, I would check and double check my reservation, not just breeze through check-in with the front desk people saying everything was taken care of.

My husband & I have stayed at lots of hotels in GF but have never stayed at a hotel with a suite like this and a breakfast bar with so much variety.
The check in was early and fast with a very pleasant front desk staff.
Entering our suite a nice pleasant surprise. A living area with couch, chair, work desk and a 42" HDTV. The bedroom has a door which we like as I can go to bed and not have to listen to the tv. The bedroom has another 42" HDTV as well in case I wanted to watch. Each room has a micro, fridge and coffee maker.
The pool area is big with tables. There is a kids pool and 2 jacuzzis which is nice.
The breakfast bar was the best we have seen in GF. Eggs, bacon, hash browns etc. Homemade oatmeal with all the fixin's. If you leave hungrey, it's your own fault.
Like the location, close to shopping and restaurants.
We have found a new hotel to stay when we return to GF.
