“Pay more to stay else where...”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

Booked a room for a 2 night stay online. We are on a very tight budget so we thought OK, this is a great deal for the week-end. We requested a QUITE - non smoking room as our drive was over 8hrs. This place needs to be updated. The entrance from the road has large pot holes. The parking lot is in bad shape. My husband found nails, screws, and garbage all over the place when we parked to check in. And you could tell that this place must have week long guests, as there was a small grill and charcoal in the median between the parking spaces. We requested a quite - non smoking room. They gave us a room facing the main parking lot on the front of the building and our room was next to the main door that went from the lobby / vending area to the hall way. We had to listen to vehicles at all hours, the door from our hall way to the lobby / vending area banging shut at all hours, you could hear people talking in the hall way, and the TV in the next room. Our room smelled of stale smoke. Upon inspection of our room, we found hair in the shower / tub and used q-tip in the bathroom garbage (went to Wal-mart and bought cleaning supplies and cleaned the shower / tub ourselves). You could tell the carpet wasn't vacuumed (borrowed a vacuum from a friend). The bed squeaked when you sat on it and the sheet and mattress pad would not stay on the bed. Reported all of this to the front desk. Was asked if we wanted a different room but would have to pay more. We declined - maybe we should have paid more for a different room! Our last night there, we where woke up by a loud bang at 3:30am - some other guests where lighting off fire works in the parking lot! Upon check out these issues where brought up again to the front desk, we asked for a discount. We were declined. And they tried to charge us 2x for our room. Next time we will save a little more - to spend a little more for different hotel. I would suggest the same - spend a little more to stay else where.

Dear 61Gail,

Thank you so much for your feedback. We work hard to create a clean and welcoming guest experience that starts at check in and lingers positively long after check out, a great price. We are delighted to hear we lived up to that goal and look forward to serving you on your next trip to Grand Forks!

It was a dark and stormy night, and every hotel in the area was full because of a Paul McCartney concert in Fargo, and we were very happy to find that this hotel had a room available for us and our dog. The young lady and young dude at the front desk could not have been more helpful, and they made sure to give us a room that we would be happy with. The room was nothing to write home about, but the service was so good that I wouldn't think twice about staying here again, and the price was right.

Room Tip: Call and talk to the front desk people if you have specific requests - they do a great job

The good: easy to use, fast, and reliable WiFi; very reasonable price; decent service; and the room was clean.

The bad: hall and room had a bit of an odour; the TV remote did not work; and the beds were squeaky and had uncomfortable pillows.

In general, it just had a bit a a seedy feel.

Tried to stay here with some friends. 70 bucks a night no way! It was so bad I paid the money tried to stay but ended up leaving just not a good experience the place smells like cigarettes and the carpets were dirty.the only reason not rating this hotel a 1 is because the bed was made. So yeah I wouldn't recommend staying here.

Reviewed 26 June 2014

We stayed the 2 nights of Monday, June 23 & Tuesday, June 24, 2014. We first asked for a room far away from the railroad tracks which run alongside the eastern side of the motel complex. We got room 101 which was at the far West end of the complex. The room was fine albeit it had a odor of stale air - not mold - not smoke - perhaps it just needed a good airing out or the carpets cleaned / Deodorized???.

The free wifi did not reach our room so we asked for another room and got room 134 - across the hall from the main desk. At that location we could pick up the wifi - however we noticed the wifi speed varied from super fast to unusable. My guess is a guest is running 'torrents' to download movies. That sucks up the bandwidth. A suggestion for the technical support is to add per client bandwidth limiting and Quality of Service to the router to limit individual guests being able to use up the entire wifi bandwidth.

This second room also had the odor of stale air in it. I also noticed an odor as I walked along the hallway towards the east side of the building. Maybe it is some kind of building wide issue?

The breakfast offering was sub-par. They had two types of cold cereal, some sugar frosted mini-donuts, a few other small pastries, juice, toast and coffee. Great if you are on a carb intensive diet. Two weeks ago the hotel manager had replied to a review from Drew B and said "We do always have three choices of fruit regardless of the season." That was not the case on our stay. On Tuesday morning at 7 AM there was no fruit at all - not even a bowl for the fruit to be in. The desk clerk said a fruit shipment was coming in later that day. On Wednesday at 7 AM there were only 3 apples in a bowl. At 8 AM there were 5 apples. My guess is the hotel staff are told to parcel out the fruit to prevent guests from hogging it. It looked like the front desk clerk was also the only person available for the breakfast room supplying and cleaning up. That led to a messy counter surface with spilled cereal from the cereal dispenser that is hard to figure out.

Our room had a vintage 25 inch CRT TV. The remote control in our room did not work. The Monday afternoon front desk clerk tried changing the batteries in it - however that only got it half going. The Tuesday morning clerk switched the remote out with one that did work. The TV on/off did not work with either remote.

OK - enough complaining over small things. The room was clean, the beds comfortable and the staff we met during our stay were friendly and helpful.

They had a washer dryer available to guests - handy if you have been on the road for a while.

if it were me I would rather stay at the Roadking - it costs more but you get an odor free room with a flat screen TV, a TV remote that works, a large enclosed pool / hot tub / patio area where you can sit out bug free year 'round, good wifi, a much better breakfast and a location closer to 32'nd avenue.

I don't expect a management reply to this review as they seem to only reply to the positive ones.
