“Not Worth The Money”

My friend and me spent quite a while in this particular hotel. It was a terrible experience. The room was not cheap, by Asian standard, but the service we got was just terrible.

1. Staff --- Most of the staff can barely speak English, lack of professionalism, not motivated, especially the receptionist, who didn't even know how to use the credit card machine. Found my own flip-flop missing one morning, it turned out that one of the staff took the liberty to lend it to somebody. Lending customer's flip-flop to people customer doesn't know, without permission!

2. Amenities --- Wi-fi was unstable, hot water was not working. Informed the staff several times a day, for couple of days, and still didn't have wi-fi and had to take cold shower.

3. Room Service --- Nobody ever cleaned the room. Fresh towel was a luxury, if you are lucky enough, you get one.

4. Room --- Toilet was broken, some unknown brown colored stuff can be seen in the toilet bowl no matter how many times I flushed it. Ants everywhere.

5. Restaurant --- Terrible. Had dinner in their restaurant once, got a plate of plain rice plus a fried egg on top after 45 minutes of waiting, instead of what I ordered, and the staff didn't know what was wrong with it, It was just frustrating.

My advice: Find another hotel.

The exterior of the hotel was in the process of being painted when we stayed - but it's the interior that could really do with some love. The reception is home to a broken piano organ, covered in dirty crockery, bottles and glasses. The first room we had suffered from a broken AC unit and a leaking toilet. The second room was better, but at dusk we had an invasion of tiny flies from all corners of the room.

This would all have been bearable, particularly at the relatively low price for the area. However, what really makes this place awful is the nightclub on the ground floor. We stayed on the third floor and the sound and vibrations of loud dance music (the sort that was popular in low rent European resorts about 5 years ago) kept us up until 3am when everything shut down.

Properly sound insulated and constructed hotels in Las Vegas aside, I don't know why anyone would try and combine a nightclub and hotel. Especially when the hotel isn't that great in the first place.

If it wasn't for the nightclub playing bad music loudly all night until 3am this would not be a bad place to stay... The rooms are ok, the water is hot, each room has a balcony and the beach is only a few minutes walk away. It is a bit tatty and tired but pretty cheap so decent value all things considered but there must be better options if you are looking for a quiet beach break...

The Beverly Hills Hotel in Mount Lavinia, Colombo, is really in the lower end of the budget range and if you don’t have too high an expectation, then it may work for you.

THE LOCATION: The Beverly Hills Hotel is located approximately about:
200 metres: Berjaya Colombo Hotel
250 metres: The beach with its line of fancy restaurants
500 metres: The bus-stop for buses to downtown Colombo
500 metres: The local restaurants priced for the budget travellers
1 km: Mount Lavinia Train Station

THE RECEPTION: The Reception is on the 1st Floor of the building and if you have any heavy baggage, it will be one mighty heavy climb.

THE ROOM (304 – 2nd Floor): It is approximately 20 sqm in area with a very basic décor that provides ample space for your baggage. It has a small 15” mounted TV, a tiny desk/dressing table and a chair for your ‘work space’ and a tiny half-length closet.

THE BED: My room (#304) has got two Hollywood singles and they both have clean sheets that are fresh and spotlessly white. The mattress is comfortable but the pillows are a bit hard. And when the air-conditioning is in full blast, you will realize that there is a missing item in the room – a good blanket. And when they bring you a ‘blanket’, it is nothing more than another sheet for the bed!

THE BATHROOM: The bathroom is large enough for you to move around and freshen up without feeling squeezed between the walls. The problem here is with the weak and inconsistent hot water supply.

THE STAFF: They are, without doubt, polite and courteous. Nevertheless, one will notice that the Manager/Owner is hardly around to supervise. The staffs are left on their own to resolve any problems/issues that do crop up. You do need to remind them of what is lacking in the rooms (e.g. towels, blanket etc.) and also request for a daily cleaning; otherwise, the sand from the beach can be felt on the bedroom floor when you walk around. Due to the excellent cleaning by the housekeeping guy, I suggest leaving a daily tip of LKR75.

THE ISSUES: Here are the issues that I find during my week’s stay at Beverly Hills Hotel:
1. No elevator to the Reception, which is on the 1st Floor. A struggle is you have more than a baggage!
2. Ants. They are in the room and bathroom.
3. Cockroaches. They do make an appearance once in a few days.
4. Unstable & Weak WiFi. This is a main issue for me.
5. Inconsistent hot water supply. Also another issue.
6. The Manager/Owner is hardly around to fix the problems that crop up.

Room Tip: Avoid Room #303!
