We stayed at the Mount Lavinia Hotel for two weeks in Nov 07. We had a wonderful holiday, the hotel is superb, food outstanding and the service excellent. There are one or two buts!!!! The hotel is on a beautiful private beach, we didn't find it dirty as other reviews have stated although some mornings there was a little debris on the tideline, but the sea is too dangerous for the average swimmer to swim in, even paddling can have you swept off your feet and under the waves, so be very careful.

Our room was on one of the lower floors and although the room was great with a wonderful sea view there was a very unpleaseant smell in the corridors which got worse at times - my advice is get yourself moved to a higher floor a.s.a.p!! a few people complained and were given another room no problem.

The food in the Governors restaurant is the best I have ever eaten. Every night there is a fantastic selection of hot and cold food with a varing theme, 20 salads to start 20 desserts to finish and an unbeleiveable choice for main course. All you can eat for two a bottle of house wine and service charge costs about £10 per person and it is excellent value and the service is so good. We also ate in the Hotel fish restaurant on the beach this was open and re-roofed while we were there, again the food is superb and very reasonable. I would also highly recommend High Tea on the terrace overlooking the pool with Columbo in the distance.

We had entertainment in the form of Jazz, Sri Lankan dancing, movie night by the pool, a resident piano player and an elephant ride on the beach (Sundays) all very enjoyable and I would thoroughly recommend a stay at this hotel.

We have been to Mount Lavina Hotel several times since 1992
but we have recently returned, and I have to say they are ruining a once beautiful hotel, I once remembered the old tiled roof of the terrace gone and how the staff would walk around the terrace at three with a lovely glass trolley filled with cakes for you to choose from, but what we thought of the beach i can not come to terms with how filthly it was, they used to rake it every morning and there was no mess on it at all, the sea resturant that was is now boarded up and looking very tired, also the regency room was used for breakfast over looking the bay it was unbelievable, that too is usd only for weddings, also there was the Indian and Chinese resturants also gone and locked up, sad, We also always had an invite to a welcoming cocktail party given buy the owner that was in the Ballroom also now used for weddings.
The Hotel was looking in need of some tlc , we stayed in the old part overlooking the bay lovely accept when it rained water dripping down the walls and ceiling, also it had a balcony but you could not go out there as i would most prob ably dropped away.

The hotel is fine and so is the food it is worth staying here for a day, but If you want a beach break this is definately not it. I am relatively well travelled but have never seen a beach or sea as filthy as this, It really is bad. in every wash a tide opr plastic rubish and lord knows what else washes up, horrible.
But if your staying here as a stop over then the hotel food and accomodation is absolutely fine and I would stay here again for those reasons

Our 8 day holiday started with a night at the Mount Lavinia. It was perfect.

We ate in the restaurant on the hotel grounds on the beach and it was the best food we had all holiday (and the food was good everywhere). Fresh seafood laid out for you to select and have cooked. Dinner cost £7 a head.

Greeted by staff wearing old colonial uniforms which came as a bit of a surprise - but there again that's all tied with the history of the place

Rooms were comfortable if not luxurious.

Try the "High tea" overlooking the pool and the ocean for a bit of old fashioned luxury. The pool and the other facilities provided a really welcome chance to get rid of the rigours of the long haul flight.

Restaurants were excellent especially the beach side sea food "shack" - fresh sea food for one to choose and then cooked to order - and wow what excellent value.

Breakfasts were buffet style and certainly enjoyable.

Behind the scenes the hotel may be looking a bit "tired" but all in all it's a smashing place to get over the flight and start the holiday off.
