Having stayed at this Hotel in April 2012, my wife and I decided to stay for Two Nights here again, when we visited Sri Lanka in the first week of June 2014. The trip from Melbourne was long, having to transit from Singapore. Again we requested and got an Ocean View Room. For those who have not been here, let me tell you that the view into the Indian Ocean is absolutely breathtaking.
The room had all the comforts one asks for. The Food once again was excellent. The quality & the service in all areas were superb.
Again I must congratulate the Chefs, for maintaining the standards which we were very happy with, two years ago. I will certainly stay in this Hotel in my next trip to Sri Lanka. An additional plus was the free Wi Fi access.
Keep up the good work.

Room Tip: Request an Ocean View Room. Just watching the waves break is so relaxing

We love this hotel for the beautiful outlook, sunset, beach and food. The breakfast is a fabulous feast!
If you want to sample Sri Lankan food but still have all the options and have easy access to Colombo this is the place for you.
Dig your shoes in the sand at the seafood restaurant on the beach!
Great for relaxing with a pool, beach, gardens, bars and hotel shops!
Pool bar service can be terribly slow at times.

The hotel is strategically located on beach. It has a private beach and views from each corner of the hotel are magnificent. The best views are from colonial rooms, pool and the breakfast lounge. We had initial teething troubles in check in and had to wait for almost 45 minutes. The confusion arose due to Expedia booking which guaranteed 1 double and 2 single beds in the room. This is what we paid for. The room shown to us was pretty small and could not have accommodated 1 single bed what to talk of 2 beds. After taking round of the entire hotel, finally we were allotted a suite in Colonial Block thanks to Mr. Lal, Manager at Front Office. The room was well maintained with excellent airconditioning and cleanliness. The only sore point was the bathroom requiring renovation. The breakfast spread was huge with few live counters. Overall a very good experience.

Room Tip: Ask for upgrade to Colonial Suite and you will not regret it.

Colombo has well preserved several British Colonial Hotels with traditions of colonial as well as Sri Lankan mixture provides a great pleasure for travelers to explore the magnificent past. Mount Lavinia is one of such property, about 12+ kms away from Heart of the city towards Galle road, located on the cliff of the Mount Lavinia.
Great view, romantic pool relish Sri Lankan spicy foods make a great stay for all visitors.

Cons: Be careful about crows, they may steal your cell phones, glass, small bags etc. when you're near poolside....at day time.

A few miles south of smoggy Colombo, converted from an old colonial-style (1806) governor's mansion. I personally felt at home, back in the 1960s!
Our room was good, well fitted, although the bathroom was a bit dingy. There is a good seafood restaurant on the beach, although some might find it a bit breezy. The pool, bar and main restaurant overlook the beach in a lovely setting.
Dining was astoundingly cheap especially by comparison with London;; even wines were very affordable. The breakfast and dinner buffets were very extensive, supported by smiling, friendly staff. Even a harmonious musical group (Sri Lanka's answer to Westlife?) to set the scene. Patrons mostly of a "mature vintage", so for once I felt young!
Just edges a 5*

After visiting Mt. Lavinia again after ten years it still retains it's charm, but, like previous reviews,it is looking a bit frayed around the edges. All the staff were excellent, helpful & friendly, room were clean but this is where things could do with updating, especially bathrooms, although some work looks like it has already started. Food was, in general, good but the menu was the same as ten years ago. There is a great deal of developement going on in Columbo with lots of new hotels being built which will reflect on the service at Mt.Lavinia which can't survive on the past & weddings!
We were there at the same time as the Youth Conference & breakfast was very noisy, but we waited until after 9am when they had all left for the day & things were considerably quieter.
There are also constant weddings & photographers in the bar area.
It's also worth extra for a full sea view room, & if things aren't right - complain!

Room Tip: Choose a high floor.

Without a shadow of a doubt I highly recommend this place. It is beautiful with a romantic story behind hotel. Food is a best of quality in the whole Sri Lanka with Chef Pablis in a lead! Loby Manager Tinesh and Concierge Manjula made our stay even more comfortable and pleasant. We were celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary witha big party on top of the roof, it was all well arranged and Manjula would go out of his way to make sure that we had everything we needed during our stay. Thank you Mt Lavinia for making our holidays enjoyable!
