Stayed there only one night on my way to the south east of Sri Lanka, the drive from airport to the hotel (i had the brilliant idea of renting a car) was a nightmare, took forever with chaotic traffic and complete disregard for any and i mean any driving or traffic rules! No street lights coupled with crazy signage and colorful cars/trucks/buses lights made it very difficult to stay focused or understanding where i was going, this said the hotel was such a pleasant stop!!!

Old and charming, very clean and with such delightful staff. I was in room 156 which is on the main floor with twin beds (which i hate) with a balcony overlooking a waves pounding sea, beautiful while noisy but the sliding door as well as the curtains made a wonderful job at keeping the sound to a lulling level and the excellent bedding and comfortable mattress insured a great night sleep!

Bathroom and room could both do with an refreshing/upgrading i guess and the carpet should be completely removed as cannot be kept clean i'm afraid, deep clean i mean, robe and slippers were available as well as the usual rooms amenities including tea making facilities, overall i would go again!

The breakfast was nice with a good selection of fruits, the usual breads and pastries as well as local curries, eggs etc etc . Served in a very airy partially open room that made it very pleasant! The hotel was busy with a mix of locals and foreigners yet they manage to serve all quickly and with good attention!

Room Tip: I think upper floors rooms will offer an even more stunning view

The reception and lounge area are impressive and suggest a grand and luxurious hotel. Sadly beyond the lounge things are old and tired. All were of the highest quality in there day but time has taken its toll and serious updating or renovation is needed. Our rooms were clean and comfortable with an amazing ocean view. The evening buffet was vast and of a good quality and the dining room staff were attentive.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms have an incredible view.

I wanted to love this hotel, I really did. We do a lot of travelling, a much of it to charming, old world hotels.

However, Mount Lavinia is really missing the mark on so many fronts. The most obvious part is that the hotel appears to garner most of its profits from local weddings. In the 2 nights of our stay, there were multiple weddings. All catering efforts appear to go towards that. Leaving hotel guests with very second rate, meagre food.

We ate 2 nights in the Governor's Dining Room which is their fine dining option. Indeed their only option, if you exclude the beach located fish restaurant. The food was poor, unimaginative and expensive. They admitted it all comes from the pool front BBQ station. It is cafe quality at best, and not of good standards.

The rooms, are old and unloved. We paid for the so called updated, renovated wing. Just as well, as it looked and felt 1970s, with no luxury feel at all. Very standard, indeed sparse fittings. I feel sorry if you booked the un-renovated wing.

The service is good. The staff do their best. But the owners are pumping little, if any money, into keeping this venerable establishment up to 3 stars. Certainly not the claimed luxury status.

Summary - old, not old world charm. There is a difference. And it is not luxurious. All effort goes towards the local wedding market.

Very disappointed.

Stayed for two days with my daughter (10 years). Location is great. Hotel is a miss match of 200 year old colonial house and cheap 60/70/80's additions. Pool was nice but the constant harassment by large and very smart crows can frighten children. Seeing one take a bread roll from someones breakfast plate had us both laughing but it didn't look like the owner of the breakfast found it as funny. In short we stayed for two nights and both left with food poisoning (we didn't eat the same thing once). We will not return.

This colonial style hotel is charming and comfortable. It's beachside and has nice views from the rooms and restaurants.
The breakfast is wonderful and so nice to sit outside and get the warmth of the tropics.
Beachside there's the fish market restaurant and you choose your seafood and have it cooked the way you like it.
