Mount Lavinia Hotel
Certificate of Excellence

Spent 7 nights at the hotel in a Ocean View Suite. The room was huge. This was a great place to stay, afternoon drinks at the pool were very relaxing. The food at the hotel was exceptional, the staff we're very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: The suites are worth the higher price

Stayed at here for 4 nights with a party of 12.  Fantastic hotel in a beautiful location.  Organized a birthday party to be held at the hotel entirely by email from australia for 35 people.  Anura made this process very easy & all details turned out perfectly on the night thanks to Samanta.  The food itself & the way it was presented made the night.
Ask for the newly renovated rooms which have walk in showers if step into bath tubs/showers are a problem for older guests. Make sure you explore the old tunnels running under the hotel. The inhouse spa is well worth the money.

Will definitely return again

If you want to stay near Colombo but not in it, then this has to be one of the best choices (budget dependent). 20 minutes plus Tuk Tuk ride from the City Centre, and minutes walks from various cafes and restaurants. (Anything from an Art Gallery Cafe to Burger King all within 15 minutes walk)
Mount Lavinia, originally the Governor's House, celebrates its colonial heritage (especially through the Staff Uniforms) but is definitely modern Sri Lankan. The rooms were modern, clean and quite large, as was the bathroom. The pool was a decent size and deep, but with a submerged seating area around the edge, allowing you to just sit in the pool if desired.
The food was very good with discounts or 'children eat free' deals depending on time of the week. The breakfast was an expansive buffet, as was the one evening meal that we took there. There was something for everyone, and they regularly seem to do 'theme' evenings. There was also well performed but un-intrusive live music during the Sunday Lunch Buffet and Monday Evening Buffet.
The hotel has a separate beach area, with beach side bar/restaurant, deck chairs and lifeguard. It was too rough to swim during our visit, but is obviously popular at other times.
The staff were very attentive and helpful. We had a late pick up for the airport and were offered a late (1500) check out, without asking, because we had two Under 10s with us. Additionally, my wife had massage at the Spa which was, by all accounts, very good, if a little pricey.
Very comfortable, great service and good for families.

I really enjoyed everything about my stay at the Hotel especially watching the local wedding ceremonies almost daily. The rooms are excellent with an incredible view of the beach. Lovely pool and outdoor sitting area. The food is also good. I would definitely stay there again when I next visit Sri Lanka.

As a business traveller who stays in many fine hotels, I was utterly delighted when the taxi pulled up outside Mount Lavinia. It was night as I checked in so I pretty much went straight to bed. I couldn't figure out what the noise was outside so in the morning, I opened the curtains to see that I was right next to the sea and it had been the waves making the noise. It was breathtaking!

The restaurant is absolutely fantastic! It is run by a very well known chef and the spread and variety offered at breakfast, lunch and dinner offers not only the very finest Sri Lankan food, but also a range of other choices, one as delicious as the next. The pool is next to the restaurant on a beautiful terrace overlooking the ocean. You have to bagsy your lounger and make sure you don't take someone else's!

The hotel has a yesteryear feel to it. Some parts are perhaps a little shabby but in the main it is a beautiful building and if anything, it's lack of pristine perfection added to its charm.

Tne staff are very friendly and helpful, the food is amazing, the rooms comfortable with great views - what more could you want!

Room Tip: Ground floor next to the sea.

we had a very pleasant stay at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. the view from our balcony was fantastic, especially at sunset.
the staff here were especially helpful, and quick to address any issues with our room.
the food was also great, with variation. however would have liked some dishes to be less spicy.
also some privacy in the bathroom would have been good as the blind was not opaque.
pool is nice and clean with a great view.

Room Tip: ask for a sea facing balcony

Hotel great, loved its style. Great room and view. Good food and again good view from the restaurant. Check-in a little slow as had some trainees just starting. Would have been an excellent but had some maintenance issues (gap in window, leading to a lot of ocean noise at night). Enjoyed my stay.
