Mount Lavinia Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 September 2010

We stayed in a spacious, oceanfront room at Mt Lavinia for a couple of days as part of our round Asia honeymoon. Sri Lanka has an amazing culture and this hotel with its rich history adds to the mystique of the place. The location is great for the beach but a car is needed for venturing outside around Colombo since the hotel is a bit far from the city centre. The buffet breakfast was to die for; everything you could possibly imagine a great breakfast should entail was included and a picturesque view overlooking the ocean to top it off.

The facilities are top notch. There is a business centre in another building adjacent to the hotel with a number of fast computers which are complimentary to use for guests. We found dining in the hotel expensive but just a short walk outside the hotel there are a few restaurants which were inexpensive. This is a very good hotel for a short or long stay in Colombo. Also, if you love the sound of a roaring ocean and crashing waves at night this is definitely the place to be.

Stayed here as part of my Honeymoon with my wife for two nights before travelling around Sri Lanka and then onto the Maldives.
The hotel has a great history and location which was a deciding factor in choosing. Our Honeymoon room was located at the corner of the building with great views of both coastline and the sea which was perfect to see the sun setting.
The hotel staff were friendly and attentive whilst the food was delicious at any of the eating establishments. The Seafood Cove supplies of course the freshest of foods caught from the sea and the choice is vast.
The only drawback was the fact it could have done with a bit of refurbishment but I think that has already taken place? Also there is a slight problem of crows which others have also alluded too, we moved to get away from them but they are a nuisance if you like to eat outside.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to any traveller who visits Sri Lanka!

We checked into the Mount Lavinia Hotel for a 10 night stay bed and breakfast. The staff are friendly and made our stay a memorable one. The looby is huge and comfortable. The Restaurant is large and there is no rush to have breakfast which buffet style served till 10.30 am. Dinner is also served in a large semi outside location and overlooks the sea. The outdoor fresh water pool is large and there was always sunshades and sun loungers available. Meals are moderately priced, but drinks are quite pricey. The hotel is located approximately 9 miles outside Colombo & also has its own private beach. There are plenty of Scooter Rickshaws and taxis available outside the hotel gates but you have to bargain in before starting your journey. All in all we throughly enjoyed are stay and would definitely recomend this hotel. Excellent Management and staff!

We enjoyed a very relaxing time at the Mount Lavinia. The constant weddings enhanced rather than detracted from the experience of such a beautiful hotel. We also personally experienced a wedding reception in one of the many beautiful wedding venues within the hotel. The staff were most accommodating and extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and it was a very pleasurable experience. Breakfast out on the terrace was a wonderful start to the day. The rooms were fairly large and the view from the balcony of the beach and Colombo in the distance was fantastic. Our only negative experience was with bookings. In total we had about 7 rooms booked for various amounts of days and almost all of us had trouble with getting the rooms that had been booked many months before. Aside from that our stay was wonderful and if we are in Sri Lanka again we would certainly stay there again.

This hotel was recommended to me by a Sri-Lankan,having read reviews before we left, I requested a room away from the raiway-line on booking. We were exhausted on arrival, I was so mad that our room was virtualy on the train track, but my husband loved the view over the sea, we decided to give it a go for the veiw, and, to be fair, the trains soon didn't bother us ,and in fact were a handy wake up call in the morning!
I cannot fault the staff, so helpful and kind. I was saddened to see some guests treating these lovely people like dirt, especially one fella getting so stressed about his fried eggs, honestly, fancy asking a young Sri-Lankan boy for Sunny-Side up eggs!! Any way after lots of tantrums and fuss, this guy got his eggs- oh get over it!!
The food was fantastic, we were half board. The curries were amazing, the evening meals were on a daily themed basis, but we were never disappointed with the choice, the Sri-Lankan night was the best, the curries blew our heads off!! The puddings are amazing, what a choice, the sugar-craft was second to none.
The breakfasts were lovely, lots of choice, and interesting juices, give the Beli drink a go! Hats off to the chefs!
The pool was nice, although the furniture was past its best, the staff again were great, there was a changing area ,loos and shower. It does get windy, so on these days you will not get a parasol. The food here for lunch is very nice and a good price.
On our first day we had lunch in the beach restaurant, it was very nice, reasonably priced but we didn't eat here again because it wasn't clear whether this was included in our half board deal. To be honest, the beach is not great, it is very rough, the sand is very course and the loungers and towels are not that clean. We wanted to have a walk up the beach one day, we went past the private beach, and were soon in a slum area where we were approached by young fella trying to sell us something, hubby and I are still in dispute as to what!!, anyhow, carried on to see poor creature, which ended up being injured dog dragging his body behind him, hubby could take no more so went back, to this rather shabby beach and then went back to the pool!! The next day, found access to public beach through the garden, on right hand side of hotel, this was a nicer walk, but again were faced with slum areas which are upsetting, I will never forget this little lad flying a kite in amongst filth and debris, which was his home.
We did a trip to Elephant sanctuary, amazing creatures, fantastic to see them in the river, probably high point of the holiday, (but the keepers expect a tip for a close up photo) after that, went to elephant safari place and had an amazing ride on an elephant! Tipped these fellows well, they are so poor.
Went on to Kandy, Temple of the tooth, that is nice place, long day but it was a lovely day out..Did a trip to Colombo, go to O'Neils for your souveniers they are much better there.
Did a trip to Galle, it was a bit shabby and not what I thought it would be. The beaches here are supposed to be the best, but they are still unkempt and not how the brochures portray them, cows wandering about and loads of plant rubbish yes, lush white sands NO!!
Ask for Leslie Thomas to take you on your trips, his English is great and his knowledge is brill, we learnt so much from him, what a lovely man. You can also tell him where to go and not to on your trip, don't visit the Areyaveda medicine place. lol, what a rip off!!
The Hotel, food, service etc is great, however, step outside here and you are in slumsville. We got a Tuk Tuk to the local supermarket for fruit juice and coke, will only cost you 300rps, but one day we walked into town, the poverty here and all over Sri-Lanka is distressing. The average wage is 1000 rps a day. 2 beers (at hotel prices) were 900rps hmm makes you think. By the end of our holiday we were giving money away! I thought Mount Lavinia was nice, but after 5 days was wanting to go home!! Nothing to do but lounge by pool or go to beach, which wasn't great (sorry!) This hotel would be great for a stop over before going somewhere else ( unless lounging by the pool is your thing) Hotel, food ,staff, lovely, location - not nice, a real eye-opener into real poverty, I came home not relaxed, but saddened by the poverty and it cost a bomb!!! There is something wrong here!! We are glad of the experience, but would never pay to come back.

Dubbed the wedding capital of Sri Lanka , where four evening weddings could take place at a given time without disturbing the guests of the hotel, the romance of the British governor's victorian grandeur is very much alive,We stayed @ the hotel from the 12th to the 18th of August . The ocean view room was ideal for watching the day break and sunset over the ocean and experiencing the sounds of the sea from the balcony.
our baggage were delivered with care to the room on our arrival
The rooms mock four poster beds were even positioned to suite our needs when requested without any delay. even the house keeping manager and the resident engineer saw to it asap.
The rooms were comfortable, bathroom neat but heard these rooms will be refurnished/or housed in a new wing soon. i hope they keep the expensive wood.
The food was five star+. we enjoyed the srilankan and western breakfast spread every morning. The variety of fruit and herbal drinks we drank and the special cuppa of Dilmah tea made on request was something we missed in Europe and the USA in 5* hotels.
Evening buffet on every themed night lived up to t the billing.
we even arranged few dinners @ the mount for a group of our local friends who enjoyed the food as much as we did.(remember to eat at the sea food cove- fish cooked from display todays catcht from the fisherman)
The Gym needs more equipment. you can always jog on the beach to the left of the hotel or on the roads( early morning)
The service was excellent. We have never experienced so much individual attention. The front office managers,The food and beverage managers, housekeeping managers clearly understood the meaning of hospitality at its best.
will i stay at the Mount again - yes of course. Hope by then the new wing is ready to experience the full 5* comfort.

A long, busy drive from Colombo airport, arrived exhausted, but just time for a swim and dinner. Large bedroom with side balcony in the main building, attractive high ceilings and beautiful, heavy, dark furnishings. Yes the room was cold but blankets were delivered as soon as we asked. Probably wouldn't stay here again as a long drive back to Colombo the next morning for the start of our tour. Might be better to visit last before return to the airport.
