This was our fourth visit to this hotel. The manager, Daniel, has made some improvements to the hotel that have made it a much better place to stay. The refurbished superior rooms are absolutely brilliant. We stayed in a sea front villa but, having been shown the new rooms, I personally would choose the superior rooms. The staff, as on previous visits, were all very friendly and we would like to thank Yapa, food and beverage captain and Jayasira our room attendant for looking after us so superbly. The pool attendants at the quiet pool also went out of their way to make our stay so enjoyable. The food was of a high quality and there was a choice of local and European dishes available. We ate in the Waves restaurant on two occasions, the second time being for the Valentines dinner. The food and the service was first class and I would recommend this restaurant to anybody, its great. Now the complaints: the pool towel system does not work, it needs to be revised as it is inconvenient for the guests to get a clean towel. There also appeared to be a problem with bathroom supplies in that there was a distinct lack of soap and shower gel provided even though we kept asking for it to be restocked. We went down to the local shop and brought our own. They were the only minor problems. We celebrated our wedding anniversary during our stay and in previous years the hotel kindly provided us with a celebration cake. This year, due to a mix up we did not get one. Tiger, the guest relations manager, arranged for a surprise gift on our last day to make up for this and it was much appreciated and valued. The hotel has been smartened up and all the improvements, bar the pool towel system, have made it a better place to stay. We would certainly return and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed for 9 nights on an all inclusive basis in one of the sea view villas (second row, but just as lovely as front line) and the whole holiday was just perfect. We had booked this holiday to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and it didn't disappoint. The villa was spacious clean and just a few steps from the beach. The beds are huge and very comfortable. The shower room is very large with a huge walk in shower that always had hot water. Tea and coffee making facilities which are replenished daily and if you require more then the room boys will quite happily supply more. There is also a daily allowance of two bottles of water supplied, but again if you require more our room boys were quite happy to supply four (which was pleasantly surprising bearing in mind a recent review that said they couldn't get any more water than the allotted two). There is also a "turn down" service carried out every evening, where a couple of room boys come and check the hotel supplied mosquito plug is switched on and also spray the room if required!
Regarding the room boys they were excellent nothing was too much trouble and they keep the place spotless, so must give a special mention to Gibson and his crew.
As for the rest of the hotel the food on offer was really good, absolutely loads of choice and the dessert area was just beautiful in the way it was presented. There are restaurant staff to find you tables and take your drinks order who are also just as lovely.
There are two pool areas an activity one and a quiet one and the quiet one is just that really peaceful. We didn't use the other so can't comment. There is also an on site Spa which I tried for a back massage which was very good.
There are several bar areas, but we spent most of our evening in the Aqua bar which has a lovely relaxing atmosphere to it with a live music act (most of which were very good) every night of our stay bar one.
The beach area is really clean and the sea warm, but I didn't actually swim in it because as mentioned in previous posts the sea is really quite rough, lots of crashing waves, but fantastic to paddle in or just watch the waves. Also the beach can be a really good retreat from the heat because of the wind coming off the sea, really cooling.
We did do a couple of trips with ASDA tours (At the far end of the complex passed the quiet pool area), cheaper than the tour operators and tailored to how ever you want to spend your day. We went for the elephant ride and orphanage and then onto Kandy. The ride was amazing, but the most brilliant sight for me was watching the orphanage herd coming through the street heading for the river with the babies so excited. As a life long lover of elephants that was an amazing experience! We also did a trip into Negombo which involved a tuk tuk, train and a boat ride back to the hotel. Also a fantastic experience and only takes half a day.
Just one comment regarding the trip to Kandy on the way you are also taken to a spice garden and tea factory. At the spice garden a very interesting talk through the spices and their properties, but then you are taken to an area to be shown the potions made from the spices and before you know it various massage treatments being carried out on yourselves and of course you are expected to tip for these!!
There have also been some comments regarding waiting around to be allocated your room when arriving early, but again not a problem for us. We arrived at the hotel about 10am and once all the paperwork etc was completed we were shown our room, roughly about 11am. I think it probably depends on how full the hotel is at the time?
All in all a wonderful place in a wonderful location and very good service on all levels.

Room Tip: The villas are well worth that bit extra.

Just returned from a fabulous two week holiday from club hotel dolphin. The hotel is set in a lovely location, we had a sea view villa on the beach front which was stunning - so lovely to hear the waves lapping on the shore whilst you are in bed! The hotel was immaculately clean - the housekeepers are superb, always offering to go above and beyond for you. They really looked after me whilst pregnant! Ensuring I had fresh daily bottled water and Mosquitos were kept at bay with evening sprays! The quiet pool was lovely and tranquil with tasty and high quality food served at both pool restaurants. Trips were booked with Thamel and Nissan from Asda Tours. They made our holiday complete by including us in their local culture, we had parties on the beach, played baseball, went swimming and went into negombo with them in their tuk tuks which gave us the best cultural experiences possible! Thank you so much for making the holiday so memorable! The reasons for not giving the hotel 5 stars is the all inclusive is limited with no wine offered and the extra advertised evening restaurants carried hefty price tags. The bar staff could be a lot jollier and more welcoming and the entertainment is verging on diabolical - a common complaint mentioned by many guests when we were there. But on the whole a beautiful, clean and well looked after hotel in a fabulous location. If you want to treat yourselves to gems or jewellery go and see Aadil in Sangems on the main road o/s the hotel, he is lovely, we had a beautiful ring designed at an affordable price and watched it being handmade in the workshop. On the whole a fantastic holiday, highly recommended!

We stayed here for 1 week all Inclusive on our way to The Maldives. The hotel is spacious and has the longest pool in Sri Lanka. We stayed in a ground floor Superior Sea View room (127) which opened out onto the pool area. The room was well appointed and had a lovely bathroom. Our room boy was excellent! The food was good and plentiful and there was plenty of choice. Our waiter Jeewantha was excellent! There were lots of seating areas and bar areas and there is another pool at the opposite end of the complex called The Quiet Pool which is mainly for adults. Although the hotel is on the beach you cannot swim in the sea due to the currents and undertow so the pools are essential. This seems to be the case on Sri Lanka although I understand that the sea is OK in the south.
The staff were extremely helpful and polite. However, we had a bit of a problem with an extractor fan pipe leaking down our bathroom wall. The maintenance people came to fix it but it meant we were stuck for trying to get ready for dinner for a couple of hours. Then it happened again the next day! They were quick to come to fix it but again we were stuck and had to rush to get to dinner. The boys on reception were very apologetic but we felt that it would have been nice if management had given an apology or an acknowledgement of the problem but they were nowhere to be seen.
We asked for a packed lunch to take on our tour. As requested we booked it the day before but when we asked about it at breakfast no one seemed to know about it! We did receive it about 15 minutes later. However, when we opened it at lunchtime we found some of it OK but we had 2 small rolls and some butter but nothing to spread it with. An orange (which can be messy) was included along with other fruit but no napkin. We did report back about this and made some suggestions and again the Reception staff were very apologetic which we accepted as it wasn´t their fault! No sign of management apology though....
We are not serial complainers but we like to give contructive critism when things don´t go quite right and it didn´t spoil our enjoyment of the hotel. Just be aware to check and double check!
Tip: The jewellers in the hotel we found to be quite pricey. He wanted to charge 5 times the cost of replacing a small diamond in my ring than the jewellers across the road opposite the hotel. This jeweller deals internationally and will make you pieces to your design for very reasonable prices.
We recommend doing a tour of this lovely island. They do tours through the hotel but we opted for a private 2 day overnight tour with Blue Lanka Tours which we would highly recommend and we were able to book it in advance.
The hotel is self contained and you can walk to the local village but if you want to walk to other bars, shops or restaurants then choose somewhere a little more populated and further south perhaps.
So, good accommodation, good food, good pools, good staff (apart from management)
All in all we had a good time here and many people return year after year but I´m not sure we would pick the same area.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor Superior Sea View room 127 which opens out onto the pool area. Good double gla...

We booked this All-Inclusive add-on to follow the Images of Sri Lanka sightseeing tour - see separate review.

Our stay is for only 6 nights (from 26.01.14 to 01.02.14). We were transferred from an overnight stay in Colombo that morning by the driver from the previous tour. We arrived late morning and checked in. If with Virgin Holidays make sure you have your voucher handy. We were shown to our villa. Little. Very close to neighbours. Being on the north side we were located by the quiet pool. The villa is compact but spacious. Is that possible? I liked it. Air conditioned, fan, safe, DVD player (...although faulty, had to have it replaced), satellite TV. TV is mounted on wall but seating very basic and uncomfortable. You can view TV whilst lounging on bed but it's quite a distance. There is a very basically stocked minibar - payable. Bathroom is large and modern and had a big wet room with rainfall shower head in a glass cubical. Water hot and doesn't run hot/cold/hot etc... Wifi is available and free, but a very fussy and had to input user names and passwords often and changed three times during stay. Not fast. Very temperamental. But functional - only just. DVDs are available from reception free of charge. You get a pirate copy but need to leave a 500 Rs deposit. There is also a little spot outside you can sit on and sip a drink or just chill. Rooms are kept clean but there is no set time when they clean. A couple of occasions where when we fancied a siesta mid afternoon. Others early. One occasion we skipped getting it cleaned as their timing was inconvenient. Myna Birds will visit. Weird sounds. Colombo Crows too. Noisy. Some local cats and dogs and noisy but tuneful geckos. One noise that will get into your head very quickly is the equivalent of the local ice cream van - The Ice Cream Tuk-Tuk. That guy needs to be shot and his Tuk-Tuk blown up as he blares out the same electronic tune all day from as early as 0630hrs until late.

Being by the quiet pool on our first day we chilled by the Cove Bar. There are sun loungers yet, surprise surprise, most reserved with towels very early. Germans you say? You'd be mistaken. Eastern Europeans / Russians! It wasn't crowded and was very adult. No kids. The Cove Bar offers simple snacks during the day - burgers with chips, salads, sandwiches etc.... Okay and functional. But closes at 1800hrs. A selection of cocktails non-alcoholic or with alcohol are available, but not always fully stock. Seems like they have one blender here they share with other bars on a rotation system - so smoothies, iced coffees and anything blended are often out. You don't get the full all-inclusive package due to technicality. There are self service tea and coffee. Laundry service is available but washing by hand is simple and in this winter sun cloths dry within hours. The beach is nice but the red flags were out. It looked a bit rough and swear there is a bit of the lively current out there looking at it. Walking to the main pool by the Flippers Bar is quite crowded. The pool is large and randomly shaped and surrounded by the three story superior and junior suites - looks like a modern block of flats. The Flipper Bar is open from 1000hrs to midnight and constantly plays some bad Ministry of Sound Ibiza tunes loudly, and all day, until it closes. I'm glad we're at the other end. There are a total of 5 bars on the complex with two closing at midnight. There are 3 places serving foods on the complex with the main restaurant "Sands" serving buffet foods.

The evening dinners served at "Sands" cater for all tastes, so you hope. There is something for everyone - just about. Deserts are very posh looking and fair selection of local fruits. Main courses varied but had very odd choices and had real difficulty to combine a plate, unless you opt for the curries. The curries are okay, but a bit disappointing having read reviews that they were apparently great. I had Pork Vindaloo and hoped it would be hot and spicy like back home. It wasn't. The vegetable jalfrazi wasn't hot either. The curries were okay but not "wow". The quality of meat used (especially beef) is questionable. Some very tough gristly cuts in stews and curries. Don't expect chapattis or roti on menu everyday either. Disappointing: Curry and no naan bread! Unspeakable. Still there is plenty of choice but what exactly? It is a real miss-mash up. They seem keen on killing stuff by over salting foods - pastas in sauces or Caesars salads for example. Breakfast is different. The pastries and breads seem well stocked and appetising. The cooked breakfast selection a bit disappointing. The bacon rashers had more fat than meat and varied from nicely crispy (rarely) to soggy and swimming in fat. There was a bizarre chicken bacon rasher which was totally processed and tasted as such. It often ended up in their Caesars salad as not popular I guess. Hash browns were hard and chewy and often over cooked to soggy. Sausages are worth trying if only once. More like hot dogs. Not much meat and Germanic in style. Generally not inspiring. By Tuesday I stuck to buttered toast as nothing excited me. Still, there is plenty of choice and the fruit selection, cereals and yogurts look like a good choice. Fruit juices were either fresh or from syrup concentrates. Seems like they diluted some very wrongly and were overly sweet. House coffee is good.

I have to say, by the end of our stay, finding something nice to eat from the dinner buffet at "Sands" was a chore. We found lunch was best at the "Cove" than eating the buffet lunch at "Sands". Dinner we had no choice but have buffet at "Sands" - unless we went à la carte and pay extra. What they did good was okay in quality but scarce to find. Most of the foods on offer at the buffet was otherwise bad in many sense. Salads pre-dressed so leaves were limp, soggy and lifeless. Lasagnas that had meat that had been minced from previous meals - hints of cumin and curry spices! Most odd, and damned obvious it was recycled. Selection of cheese - two on offer isn't really much of a selection and they were totally tasteless. They did pizzas one night: bread base, no tomato sauce on base. Just a slice or two of actual tomato with a few flakes of the tasteless cheese mentioned above. How can anybody murder a simple margarita that easily?!? Bread: Fresh in the morning but come evening very stale. The bread rolls were like rocks by dinner.

On our last night I spotted some paneer masala (curd cheese curry). Something different and I looked forward to trying it. The cheese was good. You could tell it was good. Likewise the sauce was good. I say "was" because the chef went and murdered what was promising to be a taste platter by making the whole lot unpleasant and inedible using an excessive amount of salt. He potentially preserved the dish using salt! I scrapped the sauce off the cheese blocks and despite doing this it was still salty. It you blocked the salt out in your mind you could almost taste what could have been. I went back to stale bread and butter. Safer.

Sadly, bread and butter ended up the best dinner option - despite the fact it was getting stale as the day progressed.

The "Cove" holds 3 times a week a special event. Fresh fish from the market is cooked for you. You pick. They cook. You pay. Per 100g. We had large prawns (6 in total). They looked big but once cooked there was little meat. All shell, legs and tentacles. 3000 Rs (£15?). It was an experience but nothing special. This event is not all-inclusive. Don't forget anything purchased outside of all-inclusive they add service charge (10%) plus government tax (about 15%). It adds up! Staff are all friendly and like to chat.

The complex is large but not massive. By the main entrance located are three shops - jewellers, touristy stuff and cloths. Cloths are good value if you want some nice "copies" of big brands. There is an internet café if you want to do some serious surfing and if the Wifi isn't good enough. They missed a trick too - there is NO snack shop on site where you can BUY snacks or sweets: like a simple Mars Bar or Pringles. Bring your own. Nearby are the resort desks for tour operators. We came with Virgin Holidays and I met our tour representative on the Monday morning - a guy called Shirley. You can book excursions with him but suggest you check out ASDA tours located next door on the north side - accessible from the beach. They will be cheaper and will tailor of trips for you.

We did the Images of Sri Lanka tour with Virgin Holidays. In hindsight we would have booked two weeks here and gone to ASDA tours for odd days out. The Images of Sri Lanka is not good nor great. Read our previous review if you're considering this as an option. There were only 4 places worth seeing in our books from that on offer, but it depends what you want to do. I think two weeks chilling with maybe 2 or 3 days out is a good balance.

We were being collected at 0615hrs by car to go to the airport on the Saturday. We did advise the reception of this as they also serve continental breakfast from 0530hrs. Breakfast was not however thought out and very limited. On arrival there was butter but no toast, cereal but no milk and coffee but no milk. No water either. There was Orange juice (from concentrate) and again undiluted - hence need for water. They did get their act together although they needed a big prod and we had to rush in the end.

This place is okay. I thought it would be better having read other reviews and base the score on previous similar experiences we've had. Come here for the weather and use it as a base. The food isn't great. The chef really should taste his food before sending it out. There was far too much salt in everything that it won't help anyone with high blood pressure. Little things need to be looked at. Diluting the juices etc... It was just all very wrong! All-inclusive drinks okay but again not great and in places again wrong. This place is functional and has potential. It just needs a good kick up the "butt" by management and it could be much better. It wouldn't take much. Lacks the "wow" factor but we would possibly comeback, if anything, only for winter sun and not the food. But there are so many other places to visit before that day ever comes. Scores: Room 7/10. Resort 5/10. Food 3/10. Total Score: 5/10

SLML, General Manager at Club Hotel Dolphin, responded to this reviewResponded 11 February 2014

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to leave a detailed account of your recent stay with us and for your kind advise. We are sorry for not meeting your overall expectations and are thankful for the feedback and ideas presented in your review.

As you may agree with me, the timings of the village bakery goods van and the electronic melody they use is beyond the control of the resort and since you were the first guest to raise this as an issue, we will certainly try our best to communicate with the said mobile vendor to find a solution which can work for the resort guests as well as the vendor themselves.

As the resort spreads through a very extensive area, we have designed the property in such a way that the guests who enjoy quiet relaxation can choose to stay at the designated Quiet Pool and Cove Bar area and for guests who like activity and entertainment during the day, the activity pool and Flippers Bar area is assigned with daily sports and music being conducted in this area. We leave the choice up to our guests to find their space within the complex which will be in line with their interests and expectations. Children prefer to be in the activity area which is close by to the newly built ‘Dolphin Kidz Club’.

We have taken your comments and considered your advice on the food, its quality and its combinations. We will continue to better our offering and try our level best to cater to every taste of our guests, although this is a very challenging task as the expectations vary with each individual guest. I would also like to bring out the fact that if you do have a special requirement, it is also advisable to speak to our chefs who you can always find during meal times in the main restaurant as they find pride in their contribution to your stay, and will certainly try their best to accommodate any special request you have in this area.

Once again we are sad that we could not provide you with a “Wow” experience, but rest assured we certainly will strive towards making all our guest leave us with fond memories of their stay. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any assistance in the future and I hope you will return to us soon.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Ludwig,
General Manager

Right on the beach!
Beautiful red sandy beach (waves seemed to be rough) adds value to your stay at this lovely property. The superior rooms are nicely decorated and the view from the small balcony overlooks the gardens, the long pool and the ocean. We did a bed and breakfast deal and not the All Inclusive. The lunch buffet has a wide variety of dishes including Sri Lankan preparations. Dinner can be ala carte or buffet. Service is excellent. Front Desk- Early check-in might be a fantasy as they strictly adhere to check-ins after 2pm. We had to wait 2 hours for our room. The shower in our room was temperamental! The pressure and temperature, both had their own mind! The welcome drinks upon arrival - sugary and right out of a can. Not recommended. Tip for the hotel manager - Why not offer fresh king coconut water? Having said that, I generally liked the property and the ambience. The location is away from the hustle and bustle and surrounded by lovely homes built by repatriated funds of Sri Lankans living in Italy.

Our 2 kids enjoyed the stay and it was really a great treat for us. We have returned from overseas and did not expect this place to have the excellent service. Only disappointment was we have been asked to take a table away from foreigners during dinner time as we thought it was not right. We found hard to reach food as we were dining away and with our autistic son became unsettling. But all other services have made our stay very pleasant. Will return next time when we visit SL.
