We were offered an upgrade when we arrived (apparently a cancellation) and had a Superior Deluxe room on the top floor at the quiet end away from the swimming pool, and looking directly over and through palm trees to the ocean; perfect for us.

The room was imaginatively designed to maximise natural light reaching the wardrobe area and bathroom/shower/toilet which otherwise would have been very dark.

One characteristic was the lighting in the room; it was entertaining determining how it all worked - but that was an amusing quirk that just made the hotel all the more unique.

The buildings and layout were impressive; beautifully designed and giving a feel of openness and friendliness yet with privacy.

The staff were charming, friendly and helpful. They were also very patient with my (appalling) attempts at a few basic Singhalese words.

The food was superb. We were on half-board and both breakfasts and dinners were buffet style with an immense array of local Sri Lankan, Indian and European foods. And it wasn't just the same range each day; there were always new dishes to try. Everything was so fresh - not only the fruits and salads, but the curries were made with the freshest local spices and herbs. The range meant we could each have what we preferred - my husband with the more European foods and me with the local dishes.
I was intrigued with the food sculptures and carvings that were at the buffet tables; one of the chefs told me they had a sculpture team and they'd spend hours cutting and carving fruits and vegetables into intricate shapes and patterns, or butter or ice into large figures.
Unfortunately, I don't think many of the guests appeared to notice or appreciate the skill involved.

Some days the local net fishermen would haul in their catches on the beach right in front of the hotel (where they end up being dependent on the fish and sea conditions).

A lovely hotel with personality - and I'd go back anytime!

Room Tip: Higher rooms at south end are quieter, overlooking palms and the shoreline rather than the swimming...

One of the best hotels in that line. The hotel standards is very good. It was clean and the ambiance was very pleasant. The food was out of this world. But the relaxing sensation that you get from east coast hotels weren't there because it was very crowded. We hardly could find a shade in the beach to relax on. The sea was kind of rough. Sea baths were not advised by the hotel. So most of the time we spent in the pool.i wouldn't advise you to goto the sea if you weren't a good swimmer. It was a wonderful family getaway. And the staff was pleasant and helpfull most of the time. It was a bit expensive since we didn't get any discounts, and a triple room is a standard double room with a extra bed hence the room was congested because of it. But the room had a balcony and we enjoyed beautiful 3 sunsets. We stayed for three days. And the major reason we wanted to stay more is the food !! Food was absolutely fabulous. Overall I think it is an awesome getaway which is close by.

This hotel ticks all the boxes for value and service. Marketed as 5 *, in reality it is a 4* but with clear 5* aspirations and spirit. The architecture by Geoffrey Bawa, is somewhat stark on entry to the reception area, but opens up to a series of water features through the centre of the hotel. Half board provides an extensive buffet breakfast menu, together with an equally expansive choice for evening meal. In addition, Nautilus Restaurant provides a quiet a la carte alternative at a reasonable cost. Indeed, this is one of the few hotels where any extras incurred, do not make it feel as if you have been ripped off. Drinks are reasonably priced as are the gifts etc in the shops on site - a welcome change to the norm. The grounds are well kept, with plenty of sunbeds, (towels provided) and large swimming pool. Monica the elephant visits occasionally! The beach is beyond, with a steeply shelving slope into the sea, not for weak swimmers, due to a strong undertow.
Out room was a 3rd floor sea facing, very comfortable although starting to date. Rooms were well serviced by the room boys, with the addition of lotus flowers when the beds were turned down. The staff were normally very friendly and welcoming. Those that weren't seemed to be new and just less sure. There were issues with the speed of service from the pool bar, but this coincided with a number of weddings held in the grounds during our stay, so staff shortage may have been the reason. It is difficult to fault our stay, the weather was perfect, hotel clean and well serviced by friendly staff who were keen to ensure that our needs were met.We would have no hesitation in returning.
Footnote: An unexpected bonus at the end of our holiday, (due to overbooking) was the opportunity to stay at Glenross, a Colonial plantation house owned by the chairman some 45 mins away,....see separate review.

Room Tip: The rooms to the left hand side are a new extension and apparently better.

We returned to The Blue Water for 16 days (some with two friends), having spent a long time here in 2012. We were not disappointed. It felt indeed like the home-from-home that it was then. We got a wonderful welcome from all the staff, many of whom we remembered. Our rooms (3rd floor right wing) were the same, although the larger suites are now complete: we wouldn't have considered them worth the extra, but some would prefer the new bathrooms which are a bit tired in the old rooms, and the larger space. Restaurant fare was unchanged and very good indeed. The pool and garden as gorgeous as ever. We mostly escaped the evening entertainment. We suggest the in-charge visits for example the Kandalama Hotel to study what can be done in terms of high quality, sensitively-chosen music that 'works' in a unique building in a remarkable location. Thanks to everyone for such a great stay and see you again before long, I hope.

Room Tip: See comments in the review. Some may find the un-refurbished rooms a bit spartan and the new suites...

This is a fantastic place to stay. It is quiet, beautiful and has excellent food and service. Very friendly atmosphere and very clean rooms with nice furniture and great view over a beautiful garden to the see. If you want to shop there are excellent shops on the opposite site of the street for clothes and Jewellery. Trustworthy owners and fair pricing at Benetton Gems & Jewellery. Relaxing holiday in heaven with a great spa as well.

Room Tip: Ask for deluxe rooms and you will be happy.

We loved this hotel, very clean in all areas and a helpful and friendly staff. The variety of food on offer at all meals was very good. My wife is a "fussy eater" (meat and potatoes only) and she found food to eat at every meal. The rooms were excellently serviced and I recommend a second floor sea-facing room with a balcony. The only problem with the balcony is that it only has a small overhang of cover - so when it rained we had to go inside - great shame that. Most people sun bathed in the gardens overlooking the beach - it was never crowded and we always found a sun bed. The beach is clean and the views were superb.
Their Customer Services Representative was a remarkable women who went above and beyond service expectations to assist us. We would definitely go back there.

we went to Blue Water for a wedding, not our choice of hotel but it was a lovely view from the bedroom. We thought the room needed an upgrade especially the bathroom, some of the people in our party were housed in the 'new wing' and were very happy with their rooms.
The pool area was very nice and never seemed crowded.
The bar area staff need more training , service was very slow at times. Food was tasty although it could have been more varied..

Room Tip: garden rooms are quieter
